Multistage Kondo effect as a manifestation of dynamical symmetries in the single- and two-electron tunneling

Abstract

The concept of dynamical symmetries is used for formulation of the renormalization group approach to the Kondo effect in the Anderson model with repulsive and attractive interaction $U$. It is shown that the generic local symmetry of the Anderson Hamiltonian is determined by the SU(4) Lie group. The Anderson Hamiltonian is rewritten in terms of the Gell-Mann matrices of the 4-th rank, which form the set of group generators and the basis for construction of irreducible vector operators describing the excitation spectra in the charge and spin sectors. The multistage Kondo sceening is described in terms of the local SU(4) dynamical symmetry. It is shown that the similarity between the conventional Kondo cotunneling effect for spin 1/2 in the positive $U$ model and the Kondo resonance for pair tunneling in the negative $U$ model is a direct manifestation of implicit SU(4) symmetry of the Anderson/Kondo model.

A local moment approach to the degenerate Anderson impurity model

Martin R. Galpin, Anne B Gilbert, David E. Logan

The local moment approach is extended to the orbitally degenerate (SU(2N)) Anderson impurity model (AIM). Single-particle dynamics are obtained over the full range of energy scales, focusing on particle-hole symmetry in the strongly-correlated regime where the onsite Coulomb interaction leads to many-body Kondo physics with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The approach captures many-body broadening of the Hubbard satellites and recovers the correct exponential vanishing of the Kondo scale for all N, and its universal scaling spectra are found to be in very good agreement with numerical renormalization group (NRG) results. In particular the high-frequency logarithmic decays of the scaling spectra, obtained here in closed form for arbitrary N, coincide essentially perfectly with available numerics from the NRG. A particular case of an anisotropic Coulomb interaction, in which the model represents a system of N 'capacitively coupled' SU(2) AIMs, is also discussed. Here the model is generally characterized by two low-energy scales, the crossover between which is seen directly in its dynamics.

Effective low-energy description of the two-impurity Anderson model: RKKY interaction and quantum criticality

Fabian Eickhoff, Benedikt Lechtenberg, Frithjof B. Anders

We show that the RKKY interaction in the two-impurity Anderson model comprise two contributions: a ferromagnetic part stemming from the symmetrized hybridization functions and an antiferromagnetic part. We demonstrate that this antiferromagnetic contribution can also be generated by an effective local tunneling term between the two impurities. This tunneling can be analytically calculated for particle-hole symmetric impurities. Replacing the full hybridization functions by the symmetric part and this tunneling term leads to the identical low-temperature fixed point spectrum in the numerical renormalization group. Compensating this tunneling term allows us to restore the Varma-Jones quantum critical point between a strong-coupling phase and a local singlet phase even in the absence of particle-hole symmetry in the hybridization functions. We analytically investigate the spatial frequencies of the effective tunneling term based on the combination of the band dispersion and the shape of the Fermi surface. Numerical renormalization group calculations provide a comparison of the distance-dependent tunneling term and the local spin-spin correlation function. Deviations between the spatial dependency of the full spin-spin correlation function and the textbook RKKY interaction are reported.

SU(4) Kondo entanglement in double quantum dot devices

Rodrigo Bonazzola, J. A. Andrade, Jorge I. Facio +2 more

We analyze, from a quantum information theory perspective, the possibility of realizing an SU(4) entangled Kondo regime in semiconductor double quantum dot devices. We focus our analysis on the ground-state properties and consider the general experimental situation where the coupling parameters of the two quantum dots differ. We model each quantum dot with an Anderson-type Hamiltonian including an interdot Coulomb repulsion and tunnel couplings for each quantum dot to independent fermionic baths. We find that the spin and pseudospin entanglements can be made equal, and the SU(4) symmetry recovered, if the gate voltages are chosen in such a way that the average charge occupancies of the two quantum dots are equal, and the double occupancy on the double quantum dot is suppressed. We present density matrix renormalization group numerical results for the spin and pseudospin entanglement entropies, and analytical results for a simplified model that captures the main physics of the problem.

A complete set of basis vectors of the Anderson model and its Kondo dynamics

Jongbae Hong

We study Kondo dynamics in the single-impurity Anderson model in terms of operator basis vectors. A complete set of basis vectors is determined by using the Hamiltonian of this model. Then, we construct a reduced Liouville space by eliminating some basis vectors that are unimportant in the Kondo regime, and we obtain the retarded Green's function. We compare our results with those of Fermi liquid theory and the numerical renormalization group method.

Fermi-liquid theory for the single-impurity Anderson model

Christophe Mora, Cătălin Paşcu Moca, Jan von Delft +1 more

We generalize Nozi\`eres' Fermi-liquid theory for the low-energy behavior of the Kondo model to that of the single-impurity Anderson model. In addition to the electrons' phase shift at the Fermi energy, the low-energy Fermi-liquid theory is characterized by four Fermi-liquid parameters: the two given by Nozi\`eres that enter to first order in the excitation energy, and two additional ones that enter to second order and are needed away from particle-hole symmetry. We express all four parameters in terms of zero-temperature physical observables, namely the local charge and spin susceptibilities and their derivatives with respect to the local level position. We determine these in terms of the bare parameters of the Anderson model using Bethe ansatz and numerical renormalization group (NRG) calculations. Our low-energy Fermi-liquid theory applies throughout the crossover from the strong-coupling Kondo regime via the mixed-valence regime to the empty-orbital regime. From the Fermi-liquid theory, we determine the conductance through a quantum dot symmetrically coupled to two leads in the regime of small magnetic field, low temperature, and small bias voltage, and compute the coefficients of the $\ensuremath{\sim}{B}^{2}, \ensuremath{\sim}{T}^{2}$, and $\ensuremath{\sim}{V}^{2}$ terms exactly in terms of the Fermi-liquid parameters. The coefficients of ${T}^{2}, {V}^{2}$, and ${B}^{2}$ are found to change sign during the Kondo to empty-orbital crossover. The crossover becomes universal in the limit that the local interaction is much larger than the level width. For completeness, we also compute the shot noise and discuss the resulting Fano factor.
