Photon Antibunching, Sub-Poisson Statistics and Cauchy-Bunyakovsky and Bell's Inequalities

Abstract

We discuss some mathematical aspects of photon antibunching and sub-Poisson photon statistics. It is known that Bell's inequalities for entangled states can be reduced to the Cauchy-Bunyakovsky inequalities. In this note some rigorous results on impossibility of classical hidden variables representations of certain quantum correlation functions are proved which are also based on the Cauchy-Bunyakovsky inequalities. The difference K between the variance and the mean as a measure of non-classicality of a state is discussed. For the classical case K is nonnegative while for the n-particle state it is negative and moreover it equals -n. The non-classicality of quantum states discussed here for the sub-Poisson statistics is different from another non-classicality called entanglement though both can be traced to the violation of the Cauchy-Bunyakovsky inequality.

Violations of classical inequalities in quantum optics

M. D. Reid, Daniel F. Walls

A review is given of correlation experiments in optics which explicitly distinguish between the predictions of classical and quantum theory. In particular, the Cauchy-Schwarz and Bell's inequalities and the phenomena of photon antibunching and squeezing are discussed. The violation of classical inequalities is shown to be associated with the nonexistence of a positive Glauber-Sudarshan P function. An example is given of a dissipative system where a violation of Bell's inequality occurs.

New effects in quantum electrodynamics

Nikolay N. Bogolubov, M. Kozierowski, Quang Tran Minh +1 more

A review is made of some quantum effects that have no classical analogs: antibunching and sub-Poisson statistics of photons, violation of the classical Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, and squeezed states of light. Nonclassical effects in the generation of harmonics and collective resonance fluorescence are investigated. Various schemes for generating squeezed states of light are proposed, and conditions for obtaining highly squeezed states are indicated. Possible applications of quantum light are also discussed.

New phenomena in quantum optics: photon antibunching, sub-Poisson photon statistics, and squeezed states

D F Smirnov, A. S. Troshin

The concepts listed in the title are introduced and clarified. The relations among them are pointed out. It is shown that the corresponding optical phenomena are definitely of a quantum nature. The basic quantities which are measured in correlation optical experiments are discussed. Manifestations of photon antibunching and of sub-Poisson photon statistics in the recording of delayed coincidences, in the distribution of photon counts, and in intensity fluctuation spectra are analyzed. (More precisely, what is involved is the spectrum of fluctuations in the photocurrent; all the results of the theoretical analysis in this review are expressed in terms of directly measurable quantities.) A diagram technique for calculating the correlation characteristics of the radiation from a polyatomic system is outlined. Photon correlations in nonlinear resonance fluorescence are analyzed. There is a discussion of approaches to the development of macroscopic sources of radiation with sub-Poisson photon statistics: the production of a squeezed state of a field in phase-sensitive parametric effects in nonlinear optics and the introduction of repulsive statistics in luminescence excitation events and in the pumping of a laser. Experiments in these directions which had been reported through April 1986 are discussed. The practical importance of reducing the quantum noise in radiation for extremely precise measurements and for optical data transmission is pointed out.

The generalized pair coherent states and the corresponding entangled coherent states

Won Sang Chung

In this paper, we consider the generalized Schrödinger cat states. Using these states, we obtain the corresponding quasi-Bell states and the reduced density operator. For these quasi-Bell states, we investigate the non-classical effects such as oscillatory photon statistics, sub-Poissonian property and violation of the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality.

Quantum Statistical Properties of Minimum Correlation States

Yun‐Jie Xia

In this paper we study the quantum statistical properties of minimum correlation states in different coefficients. We find out that the minimum correlation states disobey with the classical Cauchy-Schwartz inequality and exhibit non-classical correlations. We also study the non-classical properties about squeezing and sub-Poissonian statistics of minimum correlation states.

Testing nonclassicality in multimode fields: A unified derivation of classical inequalities

Adam Miranowicz, Monika Bartkowiak, Xiaoguang Wang +2 more

We consider a way to generate operational inequalities to test nonclassicality (or quantumness) of multimode bosonic fields (or multiparty bosonic systems) that unifies the derivation of many known inequalities and allows to propose new ones. The nonclassicality criteria are based on Vogel's criterion corresponding to analyzing the positivity of multimode $P$ functions or, equivalently, the positivity of matrices of expectation values of, e.g., creation and annihilation operators. We analyze not only monomials but also polynomial functions of such moments, which can sometimes enable simpler derivations of physically relevant inequalities. As an example, we derive various classical inequalities which can be violated only by nonclassical fields. In particular, we show how the criteria introduced here easily reduce to the well-known inequalities describing (a) multimode quadrature squeezing and its generalizations, including sum, difference, and principal squeezing; (b) two-mode one-time photon-number correlations, including sub-Poisson photon-number correlations and effects corresponding to violations of the Cauchy-Schwarz and Muirhead inequalities; (c) two-time single-mode photon-number correlations, including photon antibunching and hyperbunching; and (d) two- and three-mode quantum entanglement. Other simple inequalities for testing nonclassicality are also proposed. We have found some general relations between the nonclassicality and entanglement criteria, in particular those resulting from the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. It is shown that some known entanglement inequalities can be derived as nonclassicality inequalities within our formalism, while some other known entanglement inequalities can be seen as sums of more than one inequality derived from the nonclassicality criterion. This approach enables a deeper analysis of the entanglement for a given nonclassicality.
