Influence of an absorbing dielectric background on bistable response of a dense collection of two-level atoms

Abstract

The stationary problem of light interaction with a dense collection of two-level atoms embedded in a dielectric is treated semiclassically. The effect of dielectric absorption on the phenomenon of intrinsic optical bistability is discussed in terms of the complex local-field enhancement factor. The calculations accounting for propagation effects (nonlocal regime) show that even low dielectric absorption results in the elimination of response instabilities.

Local-field effects in a dense collection of two-level atoms embedded in a dielectric medium: Intrinsic optical bistability enhancement and local cooperative effects

Michael E. Crenshaw, Charles M. Bowden

We investigate the effect of a linear host medium on the dynamics of a dense collection of resonant atoms. We find that near dipole-dipole interaction is enhanced by the presence of the host dielectric, resulting in a lower threshold density and a greater hysteresis area for intrinsic optical bistability. Cooperative decay terms appear that represent the interaction of near dipoles mediated by the absorptive component of the dielectric function of the host medium. These terms are part of the local response and correspond to local cooperative decay effects. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Influence of local-field effects on the dynamics of superradiance by a dense medium

Anatoli V. Andreev, P. V. Polevoy, Charles M. Bowden +1 more

The theory of superradiance by an ensemble of two-level atoms embedded in a dielectric host is developed. It is shown that the near dipole-dipole interaction of a dense collection of two-level atoms is enhanced by the presence of the host material, decreasing the pulse temporal width and increasing the peak pulse intensity of superradiative emission. The influence of the inversion-dependent detuning effect on the parameters of the emitted pulses is investigated.

Bistability of optical response of an ultra thin layer consisting of two-level atoms: account of the local field

E. V. Shuval-Sergeeva, А. И. Зайцев

When describing the phenomenon of bistability of optical response of an ultra thin layer consisting of two-level atoms it is important to take into account the local field correction. The account of the correction results in the improvement of existence conditions of bistability. One more bistable region is formed starting with certain value of local field parameter. Both effects are induced by the dynamical frequency shift.

Effect of the local field on transient processes in a dense ensemble of two-level atoms

Anatoly A. Afanas'ev, Margarita Voitikova

Transient processes are analyzed based on modified Bloch equations describing the interaction of optical radiation with dense resonant media with allowance for dipole-dipole interaction between atoms (the local-field effect). An analytical solution to the equation for the population difference of resonant atomic levels, taking into account the up-conversion processes, is obtained for a rectangular pulse in the quasi-stationary approximation. Computer simulation is performed for the kinetics of the population difference of resonant atomic levels in the field of a long sine-shaped pulse. It is shown that the time dynamics of the population difference of resonant atomic levels manifests characteristic features inherent in the intrinsic optical bistability effect under an adiabatically slow variation of the acting field.

Hysteresis behavior in light reflection from a dense resonant medium with intrinsic optical bistability

Anatoly A. Afanas'ev, R. A. Vlasov, N. B. Gubar +1 more

We consider a boundary value problem of reflection of a powerful light wave from a dense resonant medium that exhibits intrinsic optical bistability because of the dipole–dipole interaction of two-level atoms. On the basis of analytical solutions and numerical simulations we establish that intrinsic optical bistability results in the dependence of the reflection coefficient on the adiabatically varying intensity of an external field. The reflection coefficient is an oscillating function of the intensity because of the additional reflectivity that is due to a light-induced sharp discontinuity in the nonlinear permittivity of a dense resonant medium.
