Abstract

We examine the problem of stability of persistent currents in a mixture of two Bose gases trapped in an annular potential. We evaluate the critical coupling for metastability in the transition from quasi-one- to two-dimensional motion. We also evaluate the critical coupling for metastability in a mixture of two species as a function of the population imbalance. The stability of the currents is shown to be sensitive to the deviation from one-dimensional motion.

Mixtures of Bose Gases Confined in a Ring Potential

J. Smyrnakis, S. Bargi, G. M. Kavoulakis +3 more

The rotational properties of a mixture of two distinguishable Bose gases that are confined in a ring potential provide novel physical effects that we demonstrate in this study. Persistent currents are shown to be stable for a range of the population imbalance between the two components at low angular momentum. At higher values of the angular momentum, even small admixtures of a second species of atoms make the persistent currents highly fragile.

Mixtures of Bose gases confined in concentrically coupled annular traps

Francesc Malet, G. M. Kavoulakis, S. M. Reimann

A two-component Bose-Einstein condensate confined in an axially symmetric potential with two local minima, resembling two concentric annular traps, is investigated. The system shows a number of phase transitions that result from the competition between phase coexistence and radial-azimuthal phase separation. The ground-state phase diagram, as well as the rotational properties, including the (meta)stability of currents in this system, is analyzed.

Hysteresis and metastability of Bose-Einstein-condensed clouds of atoms confined in ring potentials

A. Roussou, George D. Tsibidis, J. Smyrnakis +4 more

We consider a Bose-Einstein-condensed cloud of atoms which rotate in a toroidal or annular potential. Assuming one-dimensional motion, we evaluate the critical frequencies associated with the effect of hysteresis and the critical coupling for stability of the persistent currents. We perform these calculations using both the mean-field approximation and the method of numerical diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian which includes corrections due to the finiteness of the atom number.

Metastability of persistent currents in trapped gases of atoms

K. Kärkkäinen, J. Christensson, Gilbert Reinisch +2 more

We examine the conditions that give rise to metastable, persistent currents in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. A necessary condition for the stability of persistent currents is that the trapping potential is not a monotonically increasing function of the distance from the trap center. Persistent currents also require that the interatomic interactions are sufficiently strong and repulsive. Finally, any off-center vortex state is shown to be unstable, while a driven gas shows hysteresis.

Persistent currents in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates confined in annular potentials

Francesc Malet, G. M. Kavoulakis, S. M. Reimann

We consider a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate confined in an annular potential, with all the dipoles being aligned along some arbitrary direction. In addition to the dipole-dipole interaction, we also assume a zero-range hard-core potential. We investigate the stability of the system against collapse, as well as the stability of persistent currents as a function of the orientation of the dipoles and of the strength of the hard-core interaction.

Solitary waves in mixtures of Bose gases confined in annular traps

J. Smyrnakis, Manolis Magiropoulos, G. M. Kavoulakis +1 more

A two-component Bose-Einstein condensate that is confined in a one-dimensional ring potential supports solitary-wave solutions, which we evaluate analytically in the limit of a large ring. The derived solutions are shown to be unique. The corresponding dispersion relation that generalizes the case of a single-component system shows interesting features.
