Abstract

We study the spectrum of the integrable open XXX Heisenberg spin chain subject to non-diagonal boundary magnetic fields. The spectral problem for this model can be formulated in terms of functional equations obtained by separation of variables or, equivalently, from the fusion of transfer matrices. For generic boundary conditions the eigenvalues cannot be obtained from the solution of finitely many algebraic Bethe equations. Based on careful finite size studies of the analytic properties of the underlying hierarchy of transfer matrices we devise two approaches to analyze the functional equations. First we introduce a truncation method leading to Bethe-type equations determining the energy spectrum of the spin chain. In a second approach, the hierarchy of functional equations is mapped to an infinite system of nonlinear integral equations of TBA type. The two schemes have complementary ranges of applicability and facilitate an efficient numerical analysis for a wide range of boundary parameters. Some data are presented on the finite-size corrections to the energy of the state which evolves into the antiferromagnetic ground state in the limit of parallel boundary fields.

Functional methods for the solution of one-dimensional quantum systems

Subject of this work are integrable spin chains with general boundary conditions. In the framework of the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method Sklyanin has shown how to construct a family of commuting operators (transfer matrix) containing the hamiltonian of the XXX or XXZ spin chain with general boundary fields.Key ingredient is the underlying algebraic structure which is a combination of the Yang-Baxter algebra, using the known R-matrix representations, and a so-called Reflection algebra. The latter includes fields of arbitrary strength and direction acting on the first and last position of the chain. This setup is solvable via algebraic Bethe ansatz in the case of diagonal boundaries, i.e. the fields are parallel to each other and in the case of the XXZ model parallel to the distinguished direction.Kitanine et al. have managed to express local operators in terms of the non-local elements of the underlying algebraic structure in the case of half-infinite chain length hence establishing a possible approach to evaluate expectation values of physical observables.Their results will be picked up in this work and generalized to spin chains of arbitrary (including finite) lengths using non-linear integral equations for the lowest lying state with zero magnetization. In the case of non-diagonal boundary fields the lack of a reference state or pseudo vacuum prohibits the solution by algebraic Bethe ansatz. The method of separation of variables proposed by Sklyanin is not constrained in that sense and will be applied to this situation. In this approach for the XXX spin chain no restrictions to the boundary parameters are needed. The result is a TQ-equation on a finite discrete set of points and the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix are obtainable from this finite difference equation. As the underlying algebraic structure is independent of the representation, the analysis for the XXX spin chain can be extended to a spin-boson model.Using a known representation of the algebra for the bosonic degree of freedom again a TQ-equation is obtained but in this case being defined on an infinite discrete set of points. Finally a different approach to the case of non-diagonal boundary conditions using non-linear integral equations is studied.By construction of higher dimensional representations of the Yang Baxter algebra a hierarchy of transfer matrices is obtained. In this construction two R-matrices are fused together yielding the name of fusion hierarchy. From such hierarchies it is possible to derive non-linear integral equations for a certain eigenvalue of the transfer matrix using Fourier transform techniques. The equations are valid for arbitrary system sizes and a range of boundary parameters.By careful analysis of the zero and pole structure it is possible to extract information about the eigenvalue of a specific state.

Open spin chains with generic integrable boundaries: Baxter equation and Bethe ansatz completeness from separation of variables

N Kitanine, Jean Michel Maillet, Giuliano Niccoli

We solve the longstanding problem of defining a functional characterization of the spectrum of the transfer matrix associated with the most general spin-1/2 representations of the six-vertex reflection algebra for general inhomogeneous chains. The corresponding homogeneous limit reproduces the spectrum of the Hamiltonian of the spin-1/2 open XXZ and XXX quantum chains with the most general integrable boundaries. The spectrum is characterized by a second order finite difference functional equation of Baxter type with an inhomogeneous term which vanishes only for some special but yet interesting non-diagonal boundary conditions. This functional equation is shown to be equivalent to the known separation of variables (SOV) representation, hence proving that it defines a complete characterization of the transfer matrix spectrum. The polynomial form of the Q -function allows us to show that a finite system of generalized Bethe equations can also be used to describe the complete transfer matrix spectrum.

Non-linear integral equations for the XXX spin-1/2 quantum chain with non-diagonal boundary fields

Holger Frahm, Andreas Klümper, Dennis Wagner +1 more

The XXX spin- \frac{1}{2} 1 2 Heisenberg chain with non-diagonal boundary fields represents a cornerstone model in the study of integrable systems with open boundaries. Despite its significance, solving this model exactly has remained a formidable challenge due to the breaking of U(1) U ( 1 ) symmetry. Building on the off-diagonal Bethe Ansatz (ODBA), we derive a set of nonlinear integral equations (NLIEs) that encapsulate the exact spectrum of the model. For U(1) U ( 1 ) symmetric spin- \frac{1}{2} 1 2 chains such NLIEs involve two functions a(x) a ( x ) and \bar{a}(x) a ‾ ( x ) coupled by an integration kernel with short-ranged elements. The solution functions show characteristic features for arguments at some length scale which grows logarithmically with system size N N . In the case considered here the U(1) U ( 1 ) symmetry is broken by the non-diagonal boundary fields and the equations involve a novel third function c(x) c ( x ) , which captures the inhomogeneous contributions to the T T - Q Q relation in the ODBA. The kernel elements coupling this function to the standard ones are long-ranged and lead for the ground-state to a winding phenomenon. In \log(1+a(x)) log ( 1 + a ( x ) ) and \log(1+\bar a(x)) log ( 1 + a ‾ ( x ) )

Exact spectrum of the spin-s Heisenberg chain with generic non-diagonal boundaries

Junpeng Cao, Shuai Cui, Wen‐Li Yang +2 more

The off-diagonal Bethe ansatz method is generalized to the high spin integrable systems associated with the su(2) algebra by employing the spin-s isotropic Heisenberg chain model with generic integrable boundaries as an example. With the fusion techniques, certain closed operator identities for constructing the functional T − Q relations and the Bethe ansatz equations are derived. It is found that a variety of inhomogeneous T − Q relations obeying the operator product identities can be constructed. Numerical results for two-site s = 1 case indicate that an arbitrary choice of the derived T − Q relations is enough to give the complete spectrum of the transfer matrix.

Bethe ansatz solution of the openXXspin chain with non-diagonal boundary terms

Rafael I. Nepomechie

We consider the integrable open XX quantum spin chain with non-diagonal boundary terms. We derive an exact inversion identity, by which we obtain the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix and the Bethe ansatz equations. For generic values of the boundary parameters, the Bethe ansatz solution is formulated in terms of the Jacobian elliptic functions.

Boundary energy of the open XXX chain with a non-diagonal boundary term

Rafael I. Nepomechie, Chunguang Wang

We analyze the ground state of the open spin-1/2 isotropic quantum spin chain with a non-diagonal boundary term using a recently proposed Bethe ansatz solution. As the coefficient of the non-diagonal boundary term tends to zero, the Bethe roots split evenly into two sets: those that remain finite, and those that become infinite. We argue that the former satisfy conventional Bethe equations, while the latter satisfy a generalization of the Richardson–Gaudin equations. We derive an expression for the leading correction to the boundary energy in terms of the boundary parameters.
