Abstract

The XXX spin- \frac{1}{2} 1 2 Heisenberg chain with non-diagonal boundary fields represents a cornerstone model in the study of integrable systems with open boundaries. Despite its significance, solving this model exactly has remained a formidable challenge due to the breaking of U(1) U ( 1 ) symmetry. Building on the off-diagonal Bethe Ansatz (ODBA), we derive a set of nonlinear integral equations (NLIEs) that encapsulate the exact spectrum of the model. For U(1) U ( 1 ) symmetric spin- \frac{1}{2} 1 2 chains such NLIEs involve two functions a(x) a ( x ) and \bar{a}(x) a ‾ ( x ) coupled by an integration kernel with short-ranged elements. The solution functions show characteristic features for arguments at some length scale which grows logarithmically with system size N N . In the case considered here the U(1) U ( 1 ) symmetry is broken by the non-diagonal boundary fields and the equations involve a novel third function c(x) c ( x ) , which captures the inhomogeneous contributions to the T T - Q Q relation in the ODBA. The kernel elements coupling this function to the standard ones are long-ranged and lead for the ground-state to a winding phenomenon. In \log(1+a(x)) log ( 1 + a ( x ) ) and \log(1+\bar a(x)) log ( 1 + a ‾ ( x ) )

Functional Bethe ansatz methods for the openXXXchain

Holger Frahm, Jan H Grelik, Alexander Seel +1 more

We study the spectrum of the integrable open XXX Heisenberg spin chain subject to non-diagonal boundary magnetic fields. The spectral problem for this model can be formulated in terms of functional equations obtained by separation of variables or, equivalently, from the fusion of transfer matrices. For generic boundary conditions the eigenvalues cannot be obtained from the solution of finitely many algebraic Bethe equations. Based on careful finite size studies of the analytic properties of the underlying hierarchy of transfer matrices we devise two approaches to analyze the functional equations. First we introduce a truncation method leading to Bethe-type equations determining the energy spectrum of the spin chain. In a second approach, the hierarchy of functional equations is mapped to an infinite system of nonlinear integral equations of TBA type. The two schemes have complementary ranges of applicability and facilitate an efficient numerical analysis for a wide range of boundary parameters. Some data are presented on the finite-size corrections to the energy of the state which evolves into the antiferromagnetic ground state in the limit of parallel boundary fields.

Exact solution of an anisotropic J1 − J2 spin chain with antiperiodic boundary condition

Yi Qiao, Jian Wang, Junpeng Cao +1 more

The exact solution of an integrable anisotropic Heisenberg spin chain with nearest-neighbor, next-nearest-neighbor and scalar chirality couplings is studied, where the boundary condition is the antiperiodic one. The detailed construction of Hamiltonian and the proof of integrability are given. The antiperiodic boundary condition breaks the U(1)-symmetry of the system and we use the off-diagonal Bethe Ansatz to solve it. The energy spectrum is characterized by the inhomogeneous T−Q relations and the contribution of the inhomogeneous term is studied. The ground state energy and the twisted boundary energy in different regions are obtained. We also find that the Bethe roots at the ground state form the string structure if the coupling constant J=−1 although the Bethe Ansatz equations are the inhomogeneous ones.

Exact solution of an integrable quantum spin chain with competing interactions*

Jian Wang, Yi Qiao, Junpeng Cao +1 more

We construct an integrable quantum spin chain that includes the nearest-neighbor, next-nearest-neighbor, chiral three-spin couplings, Dzyloshinsky–Moriya interactions and unparallel boundary magnetic fields. Although the interactions in bulk materials are isotropic, the spins nearby the boundary fields are polarized, which induce the anisotropic exchanging interactions of the first and last bonds. The U(1) symmetry of the system is broken because of the off-diagonal boundary reflections. Using the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz, we obtain an exact solution to the system. The inhomogeneous T–Q relation and Bethe ansatz equations are given explicitly. We also calculate the ground state energy. The method given in this paper provides a general way to construct new integrable models with certain interesting interactions.

Exact solution of a quantum spin chain with competing bulk and boundary terms

Yusong Cao, Jian Wang, Yi Qiao +2 more

Abstract We obtain the exact solution of an anisotropic quantum spin chain including nearest neighbor (NN), next nearest neighbor (NNN), chiral three-spin interactions and non-diagonal boundary terms. Because the NNN couplings are involved, we find that the off-diagonal boundary reflections can not only induce the anisotropic Dzyloshinsky–Moriya interactions at boundaries but also enhance the anisotropy of first and last bonds. These properties are absent if only the NN spin-exchanging interactions are considered. Due to that the U (1) symmetry is broken, we analytically solve the system by using the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz. The inhomogeneous T − Q relation, energy spectrum and associated Bethe ansatz equations are given explicitly. This paper provides an universal scheme to construct new integrable models with certain interesting interactions.

Tensor-network analysis of root patterns in the XXX model with open boundaries

Zhouzheng Ji, Pei Sun, Xiaotian Xu +3 more

The string hypothesis of Bethe roots is a cornerstone in the thermodynamic analysis of quantum integrable systems, since it connects root configurations with physical quantities such as the ground-state energy, surface energy and excitation spectra. For integrable models with U(1) U ( 1 ) symmetry, this connection is well established. When the U(1) U ( 1 ) symmetry is broken by generic non-diagonal boundary fields, however, the off-diagonal Bethe Ansatz leads to an inhomogeneous T\text{--}Q T – Q relation whose Bethe roots have highly nontrivial distributions. This raises two fundamental questions: whether the zero roots and the ODBA Bethe roots still possess regular and classifiable structures in the large-size limit, and whether such structures can be used to extract physical quantities. In this work, we address these two questions for the isotropic Heisenberg spin chain with non-diagonal open boundaries. By combining tensor-network algorithms with Bethe-Ansatz techniques, we determine the zero-root and Bethe-root configurations associated with the \Lambda\text{--}\theta Λ – θ relation and the inhomogeneous Bethe Ansatz equations for large system sizes, up to N\simeq 60 N ≃ 60 and 100 100 . We find that, despite the absence of U(1) U ( 1 ) symmetry, the roots exhibit well-organized patterns. The zero roots form bulk strings, boundary strings, additional roots, and a helical half-spinon, while the ODBA Bethe roots split into four geometric classes: regular roots, line roots, arc roots and paired-line roots. We further show that these root structures are not merely numerical patterns, but contain direct thermodynamic information. In particular, the geometric structure of the ODBA Bethe roots allows us to derive analytic expressions for the surface energy and elementary excitation energies. This demonstrates that the full ODBA Bethe-root configuration can serve as a thermodynamically meaningful object in a U(1) U ( 1 ) -symmetry-broken open spin chain. A comparison with the t\text{--}W t – W scheme shows that the zero-root description has a simpler topology, while the ODBA Bethe roots provide a direct route to physical quantities. Our results therefore provide a framework for studying root structures and thermodynamic properties in quantum integrable models without U(1) U ( 1 ) symmetry.

Functional methods for the solution of one-dimensional quantum systems

Subject of this work are integrable spin chains with general boundary conditions. In the framework of the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method Sklyanin has shown how to construct a family of commuting operators (transfer matrix) containing the hamiltonian of the XXX or XXZ spin chain with general boundary fields.Key ingredient is the underlying algebraic structure which is a combination of the Yang-Baxter algebra, using the known R-matrix representations, and a so-called Reflection algebra. The latter includes fields of arbitrary strength and direction acting on the first and last position of the chain. This setup is solvable via algebraic Bethe ansatz in the case of diagonal boundaries, i.e. the fields are parallel to each other and in the case of the XXZ model parallel to the distinguished direction.Kitanine et al. have managed to express local operators in terms of the non-local elements of the underlying algebraic structure in the case of half-infinite chain length hence establishing a possible approach to evaluate expectation values of physical observables.Their results will be picked up in this work and generalized to spin chains of arbitrary (including finite) lengths using non-linear integral equations for the lowest lying state with zero magnetization. In the case of non-diagonal boundary fields the lack of a reference state or pseudo vacuum prohibits the solution by algebraic Bethe ansatz. The method of separation of variables proposed by Sklyanin is not constrained in that sense and will be applied to this situation. In this approach for the XXX spin chain no restrictions to the boundary parameters are needed. The result is a TQ-equation on a finite discrete set of points and the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix are obtainable from this finite difference equation. As the underlying algebraic structure is independent of the representation, the analysis for the XXX spin chain can be extended to a spin-boson model.Using a known representation of the algebra for the bosonic degree of freedom again a TQ-equation is obtained but in this case being defined on an infinite discrete set of points. Finally a different approach to the case of non-diagonal boundary conditions using non-linear integral equations is studied.By construction of higher dimensional representations of the Yang Baxter algebra a hierarchy of transfer matrices is obtained. In this construction two R-matrices are fused together yielding the name of fusion hierarchy. From such hierarchies it is possible to derive non-linear integral equations for a certain eigenvalue of the transfer matrix using Fourier transform techniques. The equations are valid for arbitrary system sizes and a range of boundary parameters.By careful analysis of the zero and pole structure it is possible to extract information about the eigenvalue of a specific state.
