Quantum spin liquid with fermionized pi-vortices

Abstract

In this paper, we study the non-magnetic insulator state near Mott transition of 2D pi-flux Hubbard model on square lattice and find that such non-magnetic insulator state is quantum spin liquid state with nodal fermionic excitations - nodal spin liquid (NSL). When there exists small easy-plane anisotropic energy, the ground state becomes Z2 topological spin liquid (TSL) with full gapped excitations. The U(1)times U(1) mutual--Chern-Simons (MCS) theory is obtained to describe the low energy physics of NSL and TSL.

Nodal spin liquid with fermionized pi-vortices

In this paper, a new type quantum spin liquid state - nodal spin liquid (NSL) with nodal fermionic excitations explored. A candidate of NSL is the non-magnetic insulator state in 2D pi-flux Hubbard model on square lattice near Mott transition, of which the vortices (half skyrmions) become nodal fermionic excitations. In particular, the U(1) times U(1) mutual--Chern-Simons (MCS) theory is obtained to describe the low energy physics of NSL.

Chiral quantum spin liquid on the repulsive Haldane–Hubbard model in square lattices

Ya-Jie Wu, Ning Li, Jing He +1 more

In this paper, we present a study on the repulsive Haldane-Hubbard model with spin-rotation symmetry in square lattices by deriving non-linear σ model for magnetic states. It is found that a chiral spin liquid state as the ground state of the correlated system exists in the [Formula: see text] topological spin-density wave proposed by Wu et al (2016 J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 28 115602), of which the low energy physics can be determined by the Chern-Simons-Hopf gauge field theory.

Quantum non-magnetic state near metal-insulator transition —A possible candidate of spin liquid state

Gao-Yong Sun, Su-Peng Kou

In this paper, based on the formulation of an O (3) non-linear σ model, we study the two-dimensional π-flux Hubbard model at half-filling. A quantum non-magnetic insulator is explored near the metal-insulator transition that may be a possible candidate of the spin liquid state. Such quantum non-magnetic insulator on square lattice is not induced by frustrations. Instead, it originates from quantum spin fluctuations with relatively small effective spin moments. In the strong-coupling limit, our results of the spin velocity and spin order parameter agree with results obtained from earlier calculations.

Gapless quantum spin liquid, stripe, and antiferromagnetic phases in frustrated Hubbard models in two dimensions

T. Mizusaki, Masatoshi Imada

Unique features of the nonmagnetic insulator phase are revealed, and the phase diagram of the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}{t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ Hubbard model containing the diagonal transfers ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ on a square lattice is presented. Using the path-integral renormalization group method, we find an antiferromagnetic phase for small next-nearest-neighbor transfer ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ and a stripe (or collinear) phase for large ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ in the Mott insulating region of the strong on-site interaction $U$. For intermediate ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}∕t\ensuremath{\sim}0.7$ at large $U∕t>7$, we find a longer-period antiferromagnetic-insulator phase with $2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4$ structure. In the Mott insulating region, we also find a quantum spin liquid (in other words, a nonmagnetic insulator) phase near the Mott transition to paramagnetic metals for the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}{t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ Hubbard model on the square lattice as well as on the anisotropic triangular lattice. Correlated electrons often crystallize to the Mott insulator usually with some magnetic orders, whereas the ``quantum spin liquid" has been a long-sought issue. We report numerical evidence that a nonmagnetic insulating phase gets stabilized near the Mott transition with remarkable properties: The two-dimensional Mott insulators on geometrically frustrated lattices contain a phase with gapless spin excitations and degeneracy of the ground state in the whole Brillouin zone of the total momentum. The obtained vanishing spin renormalization factor suggests that spin excitations do not propagate coherently in contrast to conventional phases, where there exist either magnons in symmetry-broken phases or particle-hole excitations in paramagnetic metals. It imposes a constraint on the possible pictures of quantum spin liquids and supports an interpretation for the existence of an unconventional quantum liquid. The present concept is useful in analyzing a variety of experimental results in frustrated magnets including organic BEDT-TTF compounds and $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ atoms adsorbed on graphite.

Fermionic Magnons, Non-Abelian Spinons, and the Spin Quantum Hall Effect from an Exactly Solvable Spin- 1 / 2 Kitaev Model with SU(2) Symmetry

Hong Yao, D. H. Lee

We introduce an exactly solvable SU(2)-invariant spin-1/2 model with exotic spin excitations. With time reversal symmetry (TRS), the ground state is a spin liquid with gapless or gapped spin-1 but fermionic excitations. When TRS is broken, the resulting spin liquid exhibits deconfined vortex excitations which carry spin-1/2 and obey non-Abelian statistics. We show that this SU(2) invariant non-Abelian spin liquid exhibits the spin quantum Hall effect with quantized spin Hall conductivity σ(xy)(s)=ℏ/2π, and that the spin response is effectively described by the SO(3) level-1 Chern-Simons theory at low energy. We further propose that a SU(2) level-2 Chern-Simons theory is the effective field theory describing the topological structure of the non-Abelian SU(2) invariant spin liquid.

Mott-Hubbard phase transition, gapped electron liquid in insulator stat

Igor N. Karnaukhov

Within the framework of a mean-field approach the Mott-Hubbard phase transition is considered in the Hubbard and Falicov-Kimball models for half-filled occupation. It is shown that a static Z_2-field forms an insulator state on the lattice with a double cell, its strength is determined by the Hubbard interaction. An uniform configuration of the Z_2-field corresponds to a gapless spin liquid state, the configuration, at which the lattice with a double cell is formed, corresponds to a gapped fermion liquid, fermions move in this field. Due to the presence of a static field in an insulator state, a formation of a gapped electron liquid is similar to the gapless Majorana spin liquid in Kitaev's model [1]. A gap in the spectrum is calculated depending on the magnitude of the Hubbard interaction for the chain, square and cubic lattices. The proposed approach allows us to describe the Mott-Hubbard phase transition and the insulator state within the same formalism for an arbitrary dimension for different models.
