Abstract

We describe a new type of spatially periodic structure (lattice models): a polaritonic crystal formed by a two-dimensional lattice of trapped two-level atoms interacting with the electromagnetic field in a cavity (or in a one-dimensional array of tunnelling-coupled microcavities), which allows polaritons to be fully localised. Using a one-dimensional polaritonic crystal as an example, we analyse conditions for quantum degeneracy of a lower-polariton gas and those for quantum optical information recording and storage.

Phase transition and storage of quantum optical information in spatially periodical atomic structure

Igor O. Barinov, Eugenii S. Sedov, A. P. Alodjants +1 more

A new developed for storing quantum information on atomic polaritons being at thermal equilibrium is developed for the first time. We propose a new type of spatially periodic structure - polaritonic crystal (PolC) formed by trapped two-level atoms interacting with quantum electromagnetic field in one-dimensional array of tunnelcoupled microcavities, which allows polaritons to be fully localized. The quantum degeneracy and phase transition to superfluid (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-type) state for low branch polaritons is discussed. The principal result is that the group velocity of polaritons depends essentially on the order parameter of the system, i.e. on the average photon number in the cavity array. An algorithm for the spatially distributed writing, storing, and retrieving of quantum optical information using polariton wave packet propagated in the cavity array is examined. To take into account decoherence processes in polaritonic system the quantum Brownian particle model is discussed as well.

Strongly localized polaritons in an array of trapped two-level atoms interacting with a light field

A P Alodjants, I O Barinov, Sergei M Arakelyan

We propose a new type of spatially periodic structure, i.e. polaritonic crystal (PolC), to observe a "slow"/"stopped" light phenomenon due to coupled atom-field states (polaritons) in a lattice. Under the tightbinding approximation, such a system realizes an array of weakly coupled trapped two-component atomic ensembles interacting with optical field in a tunnel-coupled one dimensional cavity array. We have shown that the phase transition to the superfluid Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state, a so-called (BCS)-type state of low branch polaritons, occurs under the strong coupling condition. Such a transition results in the appearance of a macroscopic polarization of the atomic medium at non-zero frequency. The principal result is that the group velocity of polaritons depends essentially on the order parameter of the system, i.e. on the average photon number in the cavity array.

Nonlinear properties and stabilities of polaritonic crystals beyond the low-excitation-density limit

Evgeny S. Sedov, A. P. Alodjants, Sergei M Arakelyan +2 more

Coherent properties of a two-dimensional spatially periodic structure, polaritonic crystal (PolC) formed by trapped two-level atoms in an optical cavity array interacting with a light field, are analyzed. By considering the wave function overlapping for both photonic and atomic states, a cubic-quintic complex nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation is derived for the dynamics of coupled atom-light states, wave function of low-branch polaritons, associated with PolC in the continuous limit. A variational approach predicts that a stable ground-state wave function of PolC exists but is accompanied by an oscillating width. For a negative scattering length, the wave function collapses in the presence of a small quintic nonlinearity appearing due to a three-body polariton interaction. By studying the nonequilibrium (dissipative) dynamics of polaritons with adiabatic approximation, we have shown that the collapse of PolC wave function can be prevented even in the presence of small decaying of a number of polariton particles.

Effects of polariton-polariton scattering and the nonlinear properties of polaritonic crystal

The existence of a stable ground-state PolC wave function is predicted using the variational approach. For negative scattering lengths, the wave function collapses in the presence of small quintic nonlinearity.

Excitons and cavity polaritons for ultracold atoms in an optical lattice

Hashem Zoubi, Helmut Ritsch

We study the resonant electronic excitation dynamics for ultracold atoms trapped in a deep optical lattice prepared in a Mott-insulator state. Excitons in these artificial crystals are similar to Frenkel excitons in noble atom or molecular crystals. They appear when the atomic excited state linewidth is smaller than the exciton bandwidth generated by dipole-dipole coupling. When the atoms are placed within a cavity the electronic excitations and the quantized cavity mode get coupled. In the collective strong coupling regime excitations form two branches of cavity polaritons with Rabi splitting larger than the atomic and the cavity linewidth. To demonstrate their properties we calculate the transmission, reflection, and absorption spectra for an incident weak probe field, which show resonances at the polariton frequencies.

Cavity polaritons with Rydberg blockade and long-range interactions

Marina Litinskaya, Edoardo Tignone, Guido Pupillo

Abstract We study interactions between polaritons, arising when photons strongly couple to collective excitations in an array of two-level atoms trapped in an optical lattice inside a cavity. We consider two types of interactions between atoms: dipolar forces and atomic saturability, which range from hard-core repulsion to Rydberg blockade. We show that, in spite of the underlying repulsion in the subsystem of atomic excitations, saturability induces a broadband bunching of photons for two-polariton scattering states. We interpret this bunching as a result of interference, and trace it back to the mismatch of the quantization volumes for atomic excitations and photons. We also examine bound bipolaritonic states: these include states created by dipolar forces, as well as a gap bipolariton, which forms solely due to saturability effects in the atomic transition. Both types of bound states exhibit strong bunching in the photonic component. We discuss the dependence of bunching on experimentally relevant parameters.
