Abstract

A new analytical approach, beyond the rotating wave approximation, based on unitary transformations and the non-markovian master equation for the density operator, is applied to treat the biased spin-boson model with a Lorentzian structured bath for arbitrary detunings at zero temperature. Compared to zero bias, we find that the non-equilibrium dynamics demonstrates two more damping oscillation frequencies and one additional relaxation frequency for non-zero bias. Analytical expressions for the non-markovian dynamics and the corresponding spectrum, the localized-delocalized transition point, the coherent-incoherent transition point, the analytical ground energy, the renormalized tunneling factor and the susceptibility are determined. The sum rule and the Shiba relation are checked in the coherent regime.

Quantum dynamics of a qubit coupled with a structured bath

Peihao Huang, H Zheng

The dynamics of an unbiased spin-boson model with Lorentzian spectral density is investigated theoretically in terms of the perturbation theory based on a unitary transformation. The population difference P ( t ) and susceptibility χ '' (ω) are calculated for both the off-resonance case and the on-resonance case Δ∼Ω. The approach is checked by Shiba's relation and the sum rule. As well, the coherent–incoherent transition point α c can be determined.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a dissipative two-level system: Nonzero bias and sub-Ohmic bath

Congjun Gan, Hang Zheng

The quantum dynamics of the dissipative two-level system with nonzero bias and sub-Ohmic bath is studied by means of the perturbation approach based on a unitary transformation. It has been shown that for the sub-Ohmic bath it is necessary to use the non-Markovian approach, especially for the short time behavior of the coupled system and environment. The nonequilibrium correlation $P(t)$ has been calculated to show that a finite bias may favor the short time coherence. The spectrum of the susceptibility ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{\ensuremath{''}}(\ensuremath{\omega})$ of the sub-Ohmic case may have a double peak structure in the range of $\ensuremath{\omega}>0$ when the coupling $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ is relatively strong. Besides, the coherence-decoherence transition point ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}$ is determined for different $0<s\ensuremath{\le}1$ by the condition of ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{\ensuremath{''}}(\ensuremath{\omega}=0)=\ensuremath{\infty}$ when $\ensuremath{\alpha}={\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}$. Finally, we show that Shiba's relation is exactly satisfied in our results.

Spin-boson model under dephasing: Markovian versus non-Markovian dynamics

Naushad Ahmad Kamar, Daniel A. Paz, Mohammad F. Maghrebi

The spin-boson model, describing a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath, is extensively studied as a paradigmatic dissipative quantum system, exhibiting rich dynamical behavior and even a localization transition in the strong coupling regime. Here, we additionally consider dephasing as a source of Markovian dissipation on top of the non-Markovian dynamics due to an Ohmic bath, and investigate the dynamics of the spin. We show that the characteristic frequency of the spin dynamics, while strongly renormalized by the bosonic bath, changes in a simple fashion (or does not change at all) with dephasing. To obtain these results, we develop an exact nonperturbative method known as the stochastic Schr\"odinger equation, mimicking the Ohmic bath via a stochastic magnetic field combined with the Lindblad quantum master equation due to dephasing, which allows us to numerically compute the dynamics. Furthermore, we derive weak-coupling analytic results utilizing the well-known noninteracting blip approximation. Our findings are relevant to quantum simulation of the spin-boson model in the regime of strong coupling in trapped ions and circuit QED architectures among others.

Two-Qubit Spin-Boson Model in the Strong Coupling Regime: Coherence, Non-Markovianity, and Quantum Thermodynamics

Hasan Mehdi Rizvi, Devvrat Tiwari, Subhashish Banerjee

We investigate the dynamics of a two-qubit open quantum system, in particular the two-qubit spin-boson model in the strong coupling regime, coupled to two thermal bosonic baths under non-Markovian and non-equilibrium conditions. Two complementary approaches, the Hierarchical Equations of Motion (HEOM) and Reaction Coordinate Mapping (RCM), are employed to examine various coupling regimes between the qubits and their respective baths. The dynamical features of the model and the impact of the tunneling amplitude on quantum coherence of the system are probed using the $l_1$-norm of coherence. The model is further shown to have non-Markovian evolution. The nontrivial task of calculating entropy production in the strong-coupling regime is performed using auxiliary density operators in HEOM. Motivated by the realization of a quantum thermal device in the strong-coupling regime, the non-equilibrium steady-state behavior of the system is investigated. Furthermore, the relationship between the heat and spin currents and the tunneling amplitude is probed.

Non-Markovian dynamics of the driven spin-boson model

Xiufeng Cao, Cheng Jiang, Peihao Huang

The non-Markovian dynamics of the driven spin-boson model at zero and finite temperature is investigated theoretically. Based on a unitary transformation and convolution theorem, the analytical expression of population difference in Laplace space is obtained. This method provides a tool to help us to understand the interference between driving and dissipation within the non-Markovian frame. We study the transient and the steady-state non-Markovian dynamics of population difference P ( t ) in the case of different temperature, driving and spin–bath coupling (SBC) strength. It has been shown that it is necessary to use non-Markovian methods when SBC is strong. At zero temperature, the curve of steady-state amplitude P lt versus Rabi driving amplitude Ω is N-like shaped. While at finite temperature, the curve becomes Λ-like shaped. These curves come from the interference between driving and dissipation. Also, from the interference pattern above, we know that large coherent oscillations can be obtained by optimizing the parameters: Rabi driving amplitude, temperature and SBC strength.

Reaction coordinate approach to non-Markovian dynamics in the spin-boson model

Santeri Kaupinmäki

The fundamental building blocks of quantum computers, called qubits, can be physically realized through any quantum system that is restricted to two possible states. The power of qubits arises from their ability to be in a superposition of these two states, allowing for the development of quantum algorithms that are impossible for classical computers. However, interactions with the surrounding environment destroy the superposition in a process called decoherence, which makes it important to find ways to model these interactions and mitigate them. In this thesis we derive a non-Markovian master equation for the spin-boson model, with a time-dependent two-level system, using the reaction coordinate representation. We show numerically that in the superconducting qubit regime this master equation maintains the positivity of the density operator for relevant parameter ranges, and is able to model non-Markovian effects between the system and the environment. We also compare the reaction coordinate master equation to a Markovian master equation with parameters taken from real superconducting qubits. We demonstrate that the Markovian master equation fails to capture the system–bath correlations for short times, and in many cases overestimates relaxation and coherence times. Finally, we test how a time-dependent bias affects the evolution of the two-level system. The bias is assumed to be constant with an additive term arising from an externally applied time-dependent plane wave control field. We show that an amplitude, angular frequency, and phase shift for the plane wave can be chosen such that the control field improves the coherence time of the two-level system.
