Abstract

We discuss how to engineer the phase and amplitude of a complex order parameter using localized dissipative perturbations. Our results are applied to generate and control various types of atomic nonlinear matter waves (solitons) by means of localized dissipative defects.

Matter-wave solitons supported by dissipation

Adrian Alexandrescu, Víctor M. Pérez‐García

We show how long-lived self-localized matter waves can exist in Bose-Einstein condensates with a nonlinear dissipative mechanism. The ingredients leading to such structures are a spatial phase generating a flux of atoms toward the condensate center and the dissipative mechanism provided by the inelastic three-body collisions in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. The outcome is a striking example of nonlinear structure supported by dissipation.

Generating Solitons by Phase Engineering of a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Johannes Hecker Denschlag, J. E. Simsarian, David L. Feder +10 more

Quantum phase engineering is demonstrated with two techniques that allow the spatial phase distribution of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to be written and read out. A quantum state was designed and produced by optically imprinting a phase pattern onto a BEC of sodium atoms, and matter-wave interferometry with spatially resolved imaging was used to analyze the resultant phase distribution. An appropriate phase imprint created solitons, the first experimental realization of this nonlinear phenomenon in a BEC. The subsequent evolution of these excitations was investigated both experimentally and theoretically.

Coherent Atom Optics with Bose-Einstein Condensates

Kai Bongs, Sven Burger, S. Dettmer +2 more

The coherent manipulation of Bose-Einstein Condensates by far blue detuned dipole potentials is discussed. “Classical” atom optical elements, like mirrors and waveguides, are realised and the dynamics of coherent matter waves interacting with these elements is investigated. The local manipulation of the phase of the condensate wavefunction by temporally applied dipole potentials represents a powerful tool for the design of matter waves. We use this method in particular for the creation of dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates and study their dynamics.

Soliton Eigenvalue Control in Optical Lattices

Yaroslav V. Kartashov, L.-C. Crasovan, Anna S. Zelenina +4 more

We address the dynamics of higher-order solitons in optical lattices, and predict their self-splitting into the set of their single-soliton constituents. The splitting is induced by the potential introduced by the lattice, together with the imprinting of a phase tilt onto the initial multisoliton states. The phenomenon allows the controllable generation of several coherent solitons linked via their Zakharov-Shabat eigenvalues. Application of the scheme to the generation of correlated matter waves in Bose-Einstein condensates is discussed.
