Abstract

Following the recent successful formation and manipulation of entangled $C^{13}$ atoms on the surface of Diamond we calculate the decoherence of the electron spin polarization in Diamond via a nonperturbative treatment of the time-dependent Greens function of the Central-Spin model, describing the phonon and Hyperfine couplings of the electron to a bath of $C^{13}$ atoms, for arbitrary initial polarizations, applied field strengths, and for up to eight entangled $C^{13}$ atoms. We compare these numerical results with the exact treatment available in the fully initially polarized limit of the non-Markovian dynamics regime, and comment on the role of dangerously irrelevant scaling in the meta-stability of $C^{13}$ flip-flop processes.

The Decoherence of the Electron Spin and Meta-Stability of 13C Nuclear Spins in Diamond

P. R. Crompton

Following the recent successful experimental manipulation of entangled 13C atoms on the surface of Diamond, we calculate the decoherence of the electron spin in Nitrogen Vacancy NV centers of Diamond via a nonperturbative treatment of the time-dependent Greens function of a Central-Spin model in order to identify the Replica Symmetry Breaking mechanism associated with intersystem mixing between the ms = 0 sublevel of the 3A2 and 1A1 states of the NV− centers, which we identify as mediated via the meta-stability of 13C nuclei bath processes in our calculations. Rather than the standard exciton-based calculation scheme used for quantum dots, we argue that a new scheme is needed to formally treat the Replica Symmetry Breaking of the 3A2 → 3E excitations of the NV− centers, which we define by extending the existing Generalized Master Equation formalism via the use of fractional time derivatives. Our calculations allow us to accurately quantify the dangerously irrelevant scaling associated with the Replica Symmetry Breaking and provide an explanation for the experimentally observed room temperature stability of Diamond for Quantum Computing applications.

Spin decoherence from Hamiltonian dynamics in quantum dots

D. D. Bhaktavatsala Rao, V. Ravishankar, V. Subrahmanyam

The dynamics of a spin-$1∕2$ particle coupled to a nuclear spin bath through an isotropic Heisenberg interaction is studied as a model for the spin decoherence in quantum dots. The time-dependent polarization of the central spin is calculated as a function of the bath-spin distribution and the polarizations of the initial bath state. For short times, the polarization of the central spin shows a Gaussian decay, and at later times it is revived displaying nonmonotonic time dependence. The decoherence time scale depends on moments of the bath-spin distribuition, and also on the polarization strengths in various bath-spin channels. The bath polarizations have a tendency to increase the decoherence time scale. The effective dynamics of the central spin polarization is shown to be described by a master equation with non-Markovian features.

Decoherence and dynamical decoupling control of nitrogen vacancy center electron spins in nuclear spin baths

Nan Zhao, Sai-Wah Ho, Ren‐Bao Liu

We theoretically study the decoherence and the dynamical decoupling control of nitrogen vacancy center electron spins in high-purity diamond, where the hyperfine interaction with ${}^{13}$C nuclear spins is the dominating decoherence mechanism. The decoherence is formulated as the entanglement between the electron spin and the nuclear spins, which is induced by nuclear spin bath evolution conditioned on the electron spin state. The nuclear spin bath evolution is driven by elementary processes such as single spin precession and pairwise flip flops. The importance of different elementary processes in the decoherence depends on the strength of the external magnetic field.

A non-Markovian approach to spin-phonon coherence and the breakdown of the Markovian approximation

Mohamed Belhassen, Tim Schröder, Gregor Pieplow

Qubit coherence is an essential figure of merit for quantum information processing applications such as quantum computing, or quantum repeaters. Understanding the coherence properties of the underlying physical qubits that facilitate such applications is therefore are often limited by coupling to lattice phonons, which in turn constrains operation temperature. Here we study phonon induced electronic spin decoherence in group-IV vacancy centers in diamond. We begin by modeling the spin-phonon interaction and then employ the widely used Born-Markov approximation, highlighting its inconsistencies in this setting and its deviations from experimental observations. To close the gap between theoretical predictions and experimental results, we relax certain approximations, investigate their contributions to the predicted coherence times, and identify the dominant sources of discrepancy. We further demonstrate that experimentally measured electronic spin coherence dynamics are consistently captured within a non-Markovian framework, and we show how the magnetic field orientation influences the qubit coherence time.

Dynamics and decoherence in the central spin model using exact methods

Michael Bortz, Sebastian Eggert, Christian Schneider +2 more

The dynamics and decoherence of an electronic spin-1/2 qubit coupled to a bath of nuclear spins via hyperfine interactions in a quantum dot is studied. We show how exact results from the integrable solution can be used to understand the dynamic behavior of the qubit. It is possible to predict the main frequency contributions and their broadening for relatively general initial states analytically, leading to an estimate of the corresponding decay times, which are related to ${T}_{1}$ of the electron. Furthermore, for a small bath polarization, a distinct low-frequency time scale is observed.

Many-Body Dynamics and Decoherence of the XXZ Central Spin Model in External Magnetic Field

Xu Zhou, Qing-Kun Wan, Xiao-Hui Wang

The many-body dynamics of an electron spin−1/2 qubit coupled to a bath of nuclear spins by hyperfine interactions, as described by the central spin model in two kinds of external field, are studied in this paper. In a completely polarized bath, we use the state recurrence method to obtain the exact solution of the X X Z central spin model in a constant magnetic field and numerically analyze the influence of the disorder strength of the magnetic field on fidelity and entanglement entropy. For a constant magnetic field, the fidelity presents non-attenuating oscillations. The anisotropic parameter λ and the magnetic field strength B significantly affect the dynamic behaviour of the central spin. Unlike the periodic oscillation in the constant magnetic field, the decoherence dynamics of the central spin act like a damping oscillation in a disordered field, where the central spin undergoes a relaxation process and eventually reaches a stable state. The relaxation time of this process is affected by the disorder strength and the anisotropic parameter, where a larger anisotropic parameter or disorder strength can speed up the relaxation process. Compared with the constant magnetic field, the disordered field can regulate the decoherence over a large range, independent of the anisotropic parameter.
