Abstract

The dynamics and decoherence of an electronic spin-1/2 qubit coupled to a bath of nuclear spins via hyperfine interactions in a quantum dot is studied. We show how exact results from the integrable solution can be used to understand the dynamic behavior of the qubit. It is possible to predict the main frequency contributions and their broadening for relatively general initial states analytically, leading to an estimate of the corresponding decay times, which are related to ${T}_{1}$ of the electron. Furthermore, for a small bath polarization, a distinct low-frequency time scale is observed.

Decoherence of two-electron spin states in quantum dots

D. D. Bhaktavatsala Rao, V. Ravishankar, V. Subrahmanyam

The time evolution of spin states of two electrons interacting with a nuclear spin bath in a quantum dot system is studied. The hyperfine interaction between the electrons and the nuclear spins is modeled by an isotropic Heisenberg interaction, and the interaction between the electron spins by Heisenberg exchange. Depending on the extent of the overlap between the spatial wave functions of the electrons, there are two physically different cases, namely, the two qubits either interact with the same set of nuclear spins or they see different nuclear spin environments. In the two cases, the decoherence of the two-qubit state is studied analytically. We have identified a class of two-qubit states that have a rich dynamics when the exchange interaction between the qubits becomes large in comparison to the hyperfine interaction strengths. The decoherence time scale is determined as a function of the bath-spin distribution and the polarizations of the initial two-qubit state. States with large decoherence times are identified by performing a minimization over all the two-qubit pure states.

Spin decoherence from Hamiltonian dynamics in quantum dots

D. D. Bhaktavatsala Rao, V. Ravishankar, V. Subrahmanyam

The dynamics of a spin-$1∕2$ particle coupled to a nuclear spin bath through an isotropic Heisenberg interaction is studied as a model for the spin decoherence in quantum dots. The time-dependent polarization of the central spin is calculated as a function of the bath-spin distribution and the polarizations of the initial bath state. For short times, the polarization of the central spin shows a Gaussian decay, and at later times it is revived displaying nonmonotonic time dependence. The decoherence time scale depends on moments of the bath-spin distribuition, and also on the polarization strengths in various bath-spin channels. The bath polarizations have a tendency to increase the decoherence time scale. The effective dynamics of the central spin polarization is shown to be described by a master equation with non-Markovian features.

Central spin models: Quantum integrability andhyperfine induced spin dynamics

B. Erbe

The spin degree of freedom has become subject to one of the broadest and most intensively studied fields of research in physics. The present thesis is part of this field and deals with so-called central spin models. The thesis is devided into two parts. In the first one we investigate very basic properties of central spin models on an abstract level. We introduce a new, or rather enhanced, notion of quantum integrability. From this we derive an explicit and, to a certain extent, analytical relation between integrability and decoherence. Then we specify a model of two coupled Gaudin models with all coupling constants being equal to each other (``homogeneous''). We numerically study the spectral properties of the model and find the spectrum to exhibit systematically degenerate multiplets. We briefly discuss possible applications in solid state quantum information processing. The second part is devoted to concrete physical considerations in the context of solid state quantum information processing. Here we consider two exchange coupled electron spins confined in semiconductor quantum dots and evaluate the hyperfine induced spin dynamics for the case of a weak magnetic field applied to the electron spins by exact methods. In a first step we consider the two exchange coupled electron spins to interact with the same bath of nuclear spins via homogeneous couplings. In particular we derive a scaling law for the decoherence time. In a second step we try to turn vice into virtue by investigating to what extent it is possible to swap and entangle two separate nuclear spin baths. Surprisingly, it turns out that a nuclear swap is possible for weakly coupled nuclear spin baths of realistic size, but not for smaller ones. We indicate that under the same circumstances it should also be possible to fully entangle the baths. We close the thesis with a summary and an outlook on further important questions.

Decoherence and control of a qubit in spin baths: an exact master equation study

Jun Jing, Lian-Ao Wu

In spin-based nanosystems for quantum information processing, electron spin qubits are subject to decoherence due to their interactions with nuclear spin environments. In this paper, we present an exact master equation for a central spin-1/2 system in time-dependent external fields and coupled to a spin-half bath in terms of hyperfine interaction. The master equation provides a unified description for free and controlled dynamics of the central spin and is formally independent of the details and size of spin environments. Different from the previous approaches, the master equation remains exact even in the presence of external control fields. Using the parameters for realistic nanosystems with nonzero nuclear spins, such as GaAs, we investigate the Overhauser's effect on the decoherence dynamics of the central spin under different distributions of bath-spin frequencies and system-bath coupling strengths. Furthermore, we apply the leakage elimination operator, in a nonperturbative manner, to this system to suppress the decoherence induced by hyperfine interaction.

Hyperfine interaction induced decoherence of electron spins in quantum dots

Wenxian Zhang, V. V. Dobrovitski, K. A. Al-Hassanieh +2 more

We investigate in detail, using both analytical and numerical tools, the decoherence of electron spins in quantum dots (QDs) coupled to a bath of nuclear spins in magnetic fields or with various initial bath polarizations, focusing on the longitudinal relaxation in low and moderate field and polarization regimes. An increase of the initial polarization of nuclear-spin bath has the same effect on the decoherence process as an increase of the external magnetic field, namely, the decoherence dynamics changes from smooth decay to damped oscillations. This change can be observed experimentally for a single QD and for a double-QD setup. Our results indicate that substantial increase of the decoherence time requires very large bath polarizations, and the use of other methods (dynamical decoupling or control of the nuclear spins distribution) may be more practical for suppressing decoherence of QD-based qubits.

Suppression of electron spin decoherence in a quantum dot

Wenxian Zhang, V. V. Dobrovitski, Lea f. Santos +2 more

The dominant source of decoherence for an electron spin in a quantum dot is the hyperfine interaction with the surrounding bath of nuclear spins. The decoherence process may be slowed down by subjecting the electron spin to suitable sequences of external control pulses. We investigate the performance of a variety of dynamical decoupling protocols using exact numerical simulation. Emphasis is given to realistic pulse delays and the long-time limit, beyond the domain where available analytical approaches are guaranteed to work. Our results show that both deterministic and randomized protocols are capable to significantly prolong the electron coherence time, even when using control pulse separations substantially larger than what expected from the upper cutoff frequency of the coupling spectrum between the electron and the nuclear spins. In a realistic parameter range, the total width of such a coupling spectrum appears to be the physically relevant frequency scale affecting the overall quality of the decoupling.
