Abstract

We consider a sub-Poissonian single-mode laser with external synchronization and analyze its applicability to the problems of quantum information. Using Heisenberg-Langevin theory, we calculate the quadrature variances of the field emitted by this laser. It is shown that such systems can demonstrate strong quadrature squeezing. Taking into account that the emitted field is temporally multimode, the application of such sources to multichannel quantum teleportation and dense coding protocols is discussed.

Producing squeezed light from conventionally pumped lasers

Craig M. Savage, Alex Stevenson, Timothy C. Ralph

It has recently been discovered that the quantum theory of the laser allows conventional lasers to produce squeezed light.1-3 The physics of this squeezing is uncomplicated and robust. It relies on the fact that a sequence of Poissonian transitions having the same total mean transition time as a single Poissonian process have less time variance than the single process. Hence the sequence of transitions has sub-Poissonian time statistics. This can be transformed into sub-Poissonian laser pumping and hence into sub-Poissonian and quadrature squeezed laser light. We will discuss how this theory can be put into practice. The effects of mode structure and inefficiences will be assessed. Candidate lasers and progress towards their experimental realization will be discussed.

Single-mode amplitude squeezing in a semiconductor laser at 780 nm

Ya. A. Fofanov, I. V. Sokolov

The problem of the creation of a sub-Poissonian radiation source on the basis of a semiconductor laser with an external cavity is considered, which operates, from the viewpoint of quantum optics, in the single-mode regime. The conditions of the generation of sub-Poissonian radiation, under which the whole set of sub-threshold modes, including the nearest modes of the external (long) cavity, is completely suppressed at room temperature, were experimentally revealed and theoretically studied. Single-frequency low-noise lasing is of interest not only for the creation of nonclassical light sources, but also for sensitive spectroscopic applications in the classical domain.

Generation of squeezed (sub-Poissonian) light by a multimode laser

A. V. Kozlovskiĭ

Theoretical and experimental results of investigations into the quantum noise of multimode laser radiation are considered. The feasibility of generating light with a photon-number-squeezed (sub-Poissonian) photon distribution by a multimode laser with a homogeneously broadened line is analyzed. The conditions of noisy and noiseless (regular) pumping are considered. Photon-number fluctuations of the net laser radiation summed over all generated modes are calculated in the approximation of equidistant equal modes, as are photon-number fluctuations in an individual mode inside and outside the resonator. Output-radiation noise spectra and photon-number fluctuations are calculated for solid-state (neodymium glass, Nd:YAG) and semiconductor lasers. Theoretical results are compared with a number of experimental data obtained for semiconductor lasers in recent years.

Numerical simulation of an injection-locked sub-Poissonian laser: Quadrature squeezing

D. A. Ivanov

The master equation for a regularly pumped laser with coherent injection has been numerically solved using quantum trajectories. The onset of quadrature squeezing of the intracavity light has been observed. The case where the injection is switched well after the pumping has been considered.

Quadrature squeezing in an isolated pulse of light

K. Samburskaya, T. Yu. Golubeva, Valentin Averchenko +1 more

Quantum properties of pulsed radiation obtained by cutting out a part of the signal from steady-state squeezed-light sources are investigated. The considered sources include a degenerate optical parametric oscillator, a sub-Poissonian injection-locked laser, and a synchronously pumped femtosecond optical parametric oscillator. Based on the statistical properties of steady-state radiation from these sources, we analyzed to what extent preservation of these properties is sensitive to the observation time.

Some properties and applications of biphoton states of three-mode light

В. Н. Горбачев, S. P. Kulik, Andrew I. Trubilko

Statistical properties, generation, and applications of three-mode biphoton fields with no more than one photon in each mode are discussed. Such field states have sub-Poissonian photon statistics and can be squeezed and entangled. The modes that simultaneously exhibit these properties in measurements are indicated. Two setups for generating such states via spontaneous parametric down-conversion are described. It is shown that the field states discussed in this study provide a quantum channel for teleportation, dense coding, and quantum key distribution.
