Some properties and applications of biphoton states of three-mode light

Abstract

Statistical properties, generation, and applications of three-mode biphoton fields with no more than one photon in each mode are discussed. Such field states have sub-Poissonian photon statistics and can be squeezed and entangled. The modes that simultaneously exhibit these properties in measurements are indicated. Two setups for generating such states via spontaneous parametric down-conversion are described. It is shown that the field states discussed in this study provide a quantum channel for teleportation, dense coding, and quantum key distribution.

Statistical properties of squeezed Kerr states

Christopher C. Gerry, R. Grobe

We study the statistical properties of squeezed Kerr states generated by squeezing, with a two-photon parametric process, the output of a Kerr medium whose input is coherent light. The squeezing has the effect of allowing the photon statistics to depend on the Kerr nonlinearity. Without the squeezing the statistics are Poissonian, but after squeezing they may be either sub-Poissonian or super-Poissonian. We also study the Q-function quasiprobability distribution for these states and related distributions associated with the quantum-mechanical phase. Finally, we show that quadrature squeezing can be enhanced and that squeezing and sub-Poissonian statistics can coexist.

Polarisation properties of single-mode biphotons

L. A. Krivitskiı̆, S. P. Kulik, Gleb Maslennikov +1 more

The paper reviews recent research by the authors on the polarisation properties of correlated photon pairs, also called biphotons, generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in the collinear frequency—degenerate regime. From the viewpoint of their polarisation properties, they represent qutrits, i.e., three-dimensional quantum systems, and are quite promising for quantum information applications.

Non-Classical States of the Electromagnetic Field

L. Mandeļ

A number of general features of non-classical states of light are reviewed. The phenomena of photon antibunching and sub-Poissonian photon statistics are then treated in more detail, including the experimental observations. Quantum effects in spontaneous parametric down-conversion are discussed, and recent experiments dealing with the time intervals between down-converted photons, with the intensity dependence of the cross-correlation function, and with the detection of a localized one-photon state are described. Finally, some quantum effects in the interference of light are discussed.

Non-classical photon statistics for two-mode optical fields

B Arvind, Narasimhaiengar Mukunda

The non-classical feature of sub-Poissonian photon statistics is extended from one- to two-mode electromagnetic fields, incorporating the physically motivated property of invariance under passive unitary transformations. Applications to squeezed coherent states, squeezed thermal states, and superposition of coherent states are given. Dependences of extent of non-classical behaviour on the independent squeezing parameters are graphically displayed.

Entangled biphoton source - property and preparation

Yanhua H. Shih

One of the most surprising consequences of quantum mechanics is the entanglement of two or more distance particles. Even though there are still questions regarding the fundamental issues of quantum theory, quantum entanglement has started to play important roles in practical engineering applications such as quantum information processing, quantum metrology, quantum imaging and quantum lithography. Two-photon states have been the most popular entangled states in fundamental and applied research. Using spontaneous parametric down conversion as an example, this review introduces the concept of biphoton wavepacket and emphasizes the very different physics associated with the entangled two-photon system (pure state) and with the `individual' subsystems (statistical mixture). Experimental approaches for Bell state preparation, pumped by continous wave and ultrashort pulse are discussed.

Quantum ternary logic based on biphotons

A. V. Burlakov, Maria V. Chekhova, O.A. Karabutova +2 more

Summary form only given. Consider a pair of collinear frequency-degenerate photons-a biphoton, which can be obtained by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). Being a three-state quantum system, it is a ternary analog of a qubit. Its state vector is |/spl psi/>=c/sub 1/|2,0>+c/sub 2/|0,2>+c/sub 3/|1,1>, with |n,m>,n+m=2 denoting n X-polarized photons and m Y-polarized photons. The first two terms describe type-I biphotons (correlated photons have similar polarizations), and the third one type-II biphotons (correlated photons have orthogonal polarizations). An arbitrary biphoton state is given by four parameters.
