Non-classical photon statistics for two-mode optical fields

Abstract

The non-classical feature of sub-Poissonian photon statistics is extended from one- to two-mode electromagnetic fields, incorporating the physically motivated property of invariance under passive unitary transformations. Applications to squeezed coherent states, squeezed thermal states, and superposition of coherent states are given. Dependences of extent of non-classical behaviour on the independent squeezing parameters are graphically displayed.

Non-classical properties and entanglement of two-mode nonlinear semi-coherent states

Azam Anbaraki, Davood Afshar

Abstract Two-mode nonlinear semi-coherent states and their even and odd superpositions are defined. Their non-classical properties, including photon statistics and squeezing, are then evaluated. We use the Mandel parameter and the second-order coherence function to study sub-Poissonian photon statistics and the photon antibunching effect. By calculating the variance of two-mode quadrature operators, we evaluate the squeezing effect for the introduced states. Next, we examine entanglement using concurrence. We have found that all states display non-classical properties within certain ranges of the parameters involved. The calculation of concurrence demonstrates that all states are entangled within specific ranges of parameters.

Non-classical Properties of Two-mode SU(1, 1) Coherent States

Luc Gilles, P. L. Knight

We examine the non-classical properties of two-mode coherent states based on different unitary irreducible representations of SU(1, 1). Such states are generated by the action of the two-mode squeezing operator on initial states of the field containing arbitrary numbers of photons in each of the two modes. If the initial state of the field is a two-mode vacuum state, the final state is of course the two-mode squeezed vacuum. An initial occupation generalizes the idea of a squeezed vacuum to the SU(1, 1) coherent states. We show that fields in such states have remarkable quantum properties such as sub-Poissonian statistics, violations of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, strong correlations in the photon number fluctuations and squeezing. Using information theory formalism, we show that these coherent states are less correlated than the usual two-mode squeezed vacuum. Moreover, we show that an initial coherent amplitude contribution, in a large amplitude limit, can result in the reduction of correlations between modes.

Squeezed States and Sub-Poissonian Photon Statistics

L. Mandeļ

It is pointed out that, although squeezing and sub-Poissonian photon statistics need not go together, in the sense that an electromagnetic field may exhibit one but not the other, the method that is normally used to detect a squeezed state automatically generates sub-Poissonian photon statistics. However, when these considerations are applied to the fluorescence from a coherently driven atom, which exhibits both squeezing and sub-Poisson fluctuations, one finds that the statistics of the emitted photons show even larger departures from classical field theory than the squeezing.

Squeezing and Sub-poisson Statistics in Three-mode Interactions

Jan Peřina, J. Bajer, J. Křepelka +1 more

A unique approach to the photon statistics in nonlinear optical interactions is suggested based on the use of moment equations and generalized superposition of coherent fields and quantum noise. Non-classical features such as squeezing of fluctuations and sub-Poisson statistics are derived for finite interaction times in the three-mode interaction process and limits of the model are provided.

Characterizations of classical and nonclassical states of quantized radiation

Arvind, Narasimhaiengar Mukunda, Richard M Simon

A new operator-based condition for distinguishing classical from nonclassical states of quantized radiation is developed. It exploits the fact that the normal ordering rule of correspondence to go from classical to quantum-dynamical variables does not in general maintain positivity. It is shown that the approach naturally leads to distinguishing several layers of increasing nonclassicality, with more layers as the number of modes increases. A generalization of the notion of sub-Poissonian statistics for two-mode radiation fields is achieved by analysing completely all correlations and fluctuations in quadratic combinations of mode annihilation and creation operators conserving the total photon number. This generalization is nontrivial and intrinsically two-mode as it goes beyond all possible single mode projections of the two-mode field. The nonclassicality of pair-coherent states, squeezed vacuum and squeezed thermal states is analysed and contrasted to one another, comparing the generalized sub-Poissonian statistics with extant signatures of nonclassical behaviour.

The spatial behavior of nonclassical light

Mikhail I. Kolobov

Nonclassical effects such as squeezing, antibunching, and sub-Poissonian statistics of photons have been attracting attention in quantum optics over the last decade. Up to now most theoretical and experimental investigations have been carried out exclusively in the time domain while neglecting the spatial aspects by considering only one spatial mode of the electromagnetic field. In many situations such an approximation is well justified. There are, however, problems that do not allow in principle a single-mode consideration. This is the case when one wants to investigate the quantum fluctuations of light at different spatial points in the plane perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the light beam. Such an investigation requires a complete description of quantum fluctuations of light in both time and space and cannot be done within a single-mode theory. This space-time description brings about a natural generalization into the spatial domain of such notions as the standard quantum limit, squeezing, antibunching, etc. It predicts, for example, the possibility of generating a light beam with sub-Poissonian statistics of photons not only in time but also in the beam's transverse plane. Of particular relevance to the applications is a situation in which the cross section of the light beam contains several nonoverlapping areas with sub-Poissonian statistics of photons in each. Photodetection of such a beam produces several sub-shot-noise photocurrents depending on the number of independent areas with sub-Poissonian statistics. This is in marked contrast to the case of a single-mode sub-Poissonian light beam in which any attempt to collect light from only a part of the beam deteriorates the degree of shot-noise reduction. This property of multimode squeezed light opens a range of interesting new applications in optical imaging, optical parallel processing of information, parallel computing, and many other areas in which it is desirable to have a light beam with regular photon statistics across its transverse area. The aim of this review is to describe the recent development in this branch of quantum optics.
