Notes on the bunching peak of g(2) functions for correlated photons from single quantum dots

Abstract

Second-order correlation functions for photon pulses associated with exciton-biexciton cascades are theoretically derived. A finite efficiency in photon detection and statistical distribution in exciton numbers are taken into account. It is found that the bunching peak height of photon statistics (g(2)(0)) depends on the mean number of excitons, N, and significant bunching is only detectable at very low excitation, N<<2.

Bunching visibility for correlated photons from single GaAs quantum dots

Takashi Kuroda, Thomas Belhadj, Marco Abbarchi +11 more

We study photon bunching phenomena associated with biexciton-exciton cascade in single GaAs self-assembled quantum dots. Experiments carried out with a pulsed excitation source show that significant bunching is only detectable at very low excitation, where the typical intensity of photon streams is less than the half of their saturation value. Our findings are qualitatively understood with a model which accounts for Poissonian statistics in the number of excitons, predicting the height of a bunching peak being determined by the inverse of probability of finding more than one exciton.

Second-Order Correlation Function for Asymmetric-to-Symmetric Transitions due to Spectrally Indistinguishable Biexciton Cascade Emission

Xue-Fei Wu, Xiu-Ming Dou, Kun Ding +7 more

We report the observed photon bunching statistics of biexciton cascade emission at zero time delay in single quantum dots by second-order correlation function g (2) (τ) measurements under continuous wave excitation. It is found that the bunching phenomenon is independent of the biexciton binding energy when it varies from 0.59 meV to nearly zero. The photon bunching takes place when the exciton photon is not spectrally distinguishable from the biexciton photon, and either of them can trigger the 'start' in a Hanbury–Brown and Twiss setup. However, if the exciton energy is spectrally distinguishable from the biexciton, the photon statistics will become asymmetric and a cross-bunching lineshape can be obtained. The theoretical calculations based on a model of three-level rate-equation analysis are consistent with the result of g (2) (τ) correlation function measurements.

Dynamics and the statistics of three-photon cascade emissions from single semiconductor quantum dots with pulse excitation

Mu-Tian Cheng, Si Xiao, Shao‐Ding Liu +3 more

We analyse the population dynamics and the photon emission statistics of a single semiconductor quantum dot with an exciton–biexciton–triexciton multilevel driven by a pulse field, in which the quantum regression theorem and optical Bloch equations are employed. The populations of the three states are comparable under resonant excitation with the input pulse area around 1.5π. Three second-order cross-correlation functions demonstrate the correlated three-photon emissions at a given order from triexciton, biexciton and exciton states driven by single pulses, while the probability of the bunched three-photon cascaded emissions decreases to the minimum as the input pulse area increases to 2π in every period.

Influence of Excitation Pulse Width on the Second-Order Correlation Functions of the Exciton-Biexciton Emissions

We investigate theoretically the population dynamics and the second-order correlation functions of photon emissions from the biexciton-exciton system of a single quantum dot with excitation from pulses to continuous wave. The dynamic equations of the correlation functions are deduced by applying quantum regression theorem to optical Bloch equations. The influences of excitation pulse width on the correlation function have been discussed in detail.

Single-Photon Emission from a Single InAs Quantum Dot

Dou Xiu-Ming, Baoquan Sun, Huang She-Song +2 more

Excitation power-dependent micro-photoluminescence spectra and photon-correlation measurement are used to study the optical properties and photon statistics of single InAs quantum dots. Exciton and biexciton emissions, whose photoluminescence intensities have linear and quadratic excitation power dependences, respectively, are identified. Under pulsed laser excitation, the zero time delay peak of second order correlation function corresponding to exciton emission is well suppressed, which is a clear evidence of single photon emission.

Steering photon statistics in single quantum dots: From one- to two-photon emission

Gordon Callsen, Alexander Carmele, Gerald Hönig +11 more

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of two-photon emission from the biexciton cascade in single GaN quantum dots. By changing the biexciton binding energy, pump power, and temperature, the balance between the one- and two-photon decay processes is controlled in this four-level system, which drastically affects the photon statistics of the resulting emission. As the most pronounced feature of this interplay we observe a bunching phenomenon and a transition from sub- to super-Poissonian photon statistics, originating from the complex nature of the biexciton cascade. This work highlights how photon statistics can be steered between one- and two-photon processes towards an increased, bunched two-photon emission probability up to 50 K with the perspective for efficient photon pair generation in the UV spectral range.
