Abstract

This work concerns the dynamical two-point spin correlation functions of the transverse Ising quantum chain at finite (non-zero) temperature, in the universal region near the quantum critical point. They are correlation functions of twist fields in the massive Majorana fermion quantum field theory. At finite temperature, these are known to satisfy a set of integrable partial differential equations, including the sinh–Gordon equation. We apply the classical inverse scattering method to study them, finding that the 'initial scattering data' corresponding to the correlation functions are simply related to the one-particle finite-temperature form factors calculated recently by one of the persent authors. The set of linear integral equations (Gelfand–Levitan–Marchenko equations) associated with the inverse scattering problem then gives, in principle, the two-point functions at all space and time separations, and all temperatures. From these, we evaluate the long-time asymptotic expansion 'near the light cone', in the region where the difference between the space and time separations is of the order of the correlation length.

Dynamical correlation functions in the Ising field theory

István Csépányi, Márton Kormos

We study finite temperature dynamical correlation functions of the magnetization operator in the one-dimensional Ising quantum field theory. Our approach is based on a finite temperature form factor series and on a Fredholm determinant representation of the correlators. While for space-like separations the Fredholm determinant can be efficiently evaluated numerically, for the time-like region it has convergence issues inherited from the form factor series. We develop a method to compute the correlation functions at time-like separations based on the analytic continuation of the space-time coordinates to complex values. Using this numerical technique, we explore all space-time and temperature regimes in both the ordered and disordered phases including short, large, and near-light-cone separations at low and high temperatures. We confirm the existing analytic predictions for the asymptotic behavior of the correlations except in the case of space-like correlations in the paramagnetic phase. For this case we derive a new closed form expression for the correlation length that has some unusual properties: it is a non-analytic function of both the space-time direction and the temperature, and its temperature dependence is non-monotonic.

Finite-temperature dynamical correlations in massive integrable quantum field theories

Fabian H L Essler, Robert M Konik

We consider the finite-temperature frequency and momentum dependent two-point functions of local operators in integrable quantum field theories. We focus on the case where the zero temperature correlation function is dominated by a delta-function line arising from the coherent propagation of single particle modes. Our specific examples are the two-point function of spin fields in the disordered phase of the quantum Ising and the O(3) nonlinear sigma models. We employ a Lehmann representation in terms of the known exact zero-temperature form factors to carry out a low-temperature expansion of two-point functions. We present two different but equivalent methods of regularizing the divergences present in the Lehmann expansion: one directly regulates the integral expressions of the squares of matrix elements in the infinite volume whereas the other operates through subtracting divergences in a large, finite volume. Our central results are that the temperature broadening of the line shape exhibits a pronounced asymmetry and a shift of the maximum upwards in energy ("temperature dependent gap"). The field theory results presented here describe the scaling limits of the dynamical structure factor in the quantum Ising and integer spin Heisenberg chains. We discuss the relevance of our results for the analysis of inelastic neutron scattering experiments on gapped spin chain systems such as CsNiCl3 and YBaNiO5.

Space-like asymptotics of the thermal two-point functions of the XXZ spin-1/2 chain

Frank Göhmann, Karol Kajetan Kozlowski

Abstract This work proposes a closed formula for the leading term of the large-distance and long-time asymptotics in a cone of the space-like regime for the transverse dynamical two-point functions of the XXZ spin 1/2 chain at finite temperatures. The result follows from a simple analysis of the thermal form factor series for dynamical correlation functions. The obtained leading asymptotics are driven by the Bethe Ansatz data associated with the first sub-leading eigenvalue of the quantum transfer matrix.

Finite-temperature form factors in the free Majorana theory

Benjamin Doyon

We study the large distance expansion of correlation functions in the free massive Majorana theory at finite temperature, alias the Ising field theory at zero magnetic field on a cylinder. We develop a method that mimics the spectral decomposition, or form factor expansion, of zero-temperature correlation functions, introducing the concept of ‘finite-temperature form factors’. Our techniques are different from those of previous attempts in this subject. We show that an appropriate analytical continuation of finite-temperature form factors gives form factors in the quantization scheme on the circle. We show that finite-temperature form factor expansions are able to reproduce expansions in form factors on the circle. We calculate finite-temperature form factors of non-interacting fields (fields that are local with respect to the fundamental fermion field). We observe that they are given by a mixing of their zero-temperature form factors and of those of other fields of lower scaling dimension. We then calculate finite-temperature form factors of order and disorder fields. For this purpose, we derive the Riemann–Hilbert problem that completely specifies the set of finite-temperature form factors of general twist fields (order and disorder fields and their descendants). This Riemann–Hilbert problem is different from the zero-temperature one, and so are its solutions. Our results agree with the known form factors on the circle of order and disorder fields.

Correlation Functions of Quantum Integrable Models: The XXZ Spin Chain

Jean Michel Maillet

A general approach to the computation of exact correlation functions of lattice quantum integrable models proposed recently is reviewed. It is based on the resolution of the quantum inverse scattering problem. The application of this method to theXXZ Heisenberg spin- $$\tfrac{1}{2}$$ in a magnetic field leads to multiple integral representations of its n-point correlation functions. For zero magnetic field, it gives a proof, in both the massless and massive (anti-ferromagnetic) regimes, of the formulas obtained from the q-deformed KZ equations (massless regime) and the representation theory of the quantum affine algebra $${\mathcal{U}_q}(\widehat s{l_2})$$ together with the corner transfer matrix approach (massive regime). We also discuss further problems, related in particular to long distance asymptotics of these correlation functions.
