Abstract

We consider the finite-temperature frequency and momentum dependent two-point functions of local operators in integrable quantum field theories. We focus on the case where the zero temperature correlation function is dominated by a delta-function line arising from the coherent propagation of single particle modes. Our specific examples are the two-point function of spin fields in the disordered phase of the quantum Ising and the O(3) nonlinear sigma models. We employ a Lehmann representation in terms of the known exact zero-temperature form factors to carry out a low-temperature expansion of two-point functions. We present two different but equivalent methods of regularizing the divergences present in the Lehmann expansion: one directly regulates the integral expressions of the squares of matrix elements in the infinite volume whereas the other operates through subtracting divergences in a large, finite volume. Our central results are that the temperature broadening of the line shape exhibits a pronounced asymmetry and a shift of the maximum upwards in energy ("temperature dependent gap"). The field theory results presented here describe the scaling limits of the dynamical structure factor in the quantum Ising and integer spin Heisenberg chains. We discuss the relevance of our results for the analysis of inelastic neutron scattering experiments on gapped spin chain systems such as CsNiCl3 and YBaNiO5.

Finite-temperature lineshapes in gapped quantum spin chains

Fabian H. L. Eßler, Robert Konik

We consider the finite-temperature dynamical susceptibility $\ensuremath{\chi}(\ensuremath{\omega},q,T)$ of gapped quantum spin chains such as the integer spin Heisenberg and transverse field Ising models. At zero temperature $\ensuremath{\chi}$ in these models is dominated by a delta-function line arising from the coherent propagation of single-particle modes. Using methods of integrable quantum field theory, we determine the evolution of the lineshape at low temperatures. We show that the lineshape is in general asymmetric in energy. We discuss the application of our results to inelastic neutron-scattering experiments on gapped spin chain systems such as ${\text{Y}}_{2}{\text{BaNiO}}_{5}$ and ${\text{CsNiCl}}_{3}$.

Finite temperature dynamical structure factors of low dimensional strongly correlated systems

W. D. Goetze, Goetze, Wolf

We determine the dynamical structure factors of two gapped correlated electron systems, namely the Ising model in a strong transverse field and the two-leg spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder in the limit of strong rung coupling. We consider the low-temperature limit, employing a variety of analytical and numerical techniques. The coherent modes of single-particle excitations, which are delta functions at zero temperature, are shown to broaden asymmetrically in energy with increasing temperature. Firstly, we apply a low-temperature “resummation” inspired by the Dyson equation to a linked-cluster expansion of the two-leg Heisenberg ladder. We include matrix elements to second order in the interaction between states containing up to two particles. A low-frequency response similar to the “Villain mode” is also observed. Next, we apply a cumulant expansion technique to the transverse field Ising model. We resolve the issue of negative spectral weight caused by double pole in the leading self-energy diagram by including a resummation of terms obtained from the six-point function, demonstrating that the perturbation series in 2n-spin correlation functions can be extended to higher orders. The result generalises to higher dimensions and the analytic calculation is compared to a numerical Pade approximant. We outline the extension of this method to the strong coupling ladder. Finally, we compare the previous results to numerical data obtained by full diagonalisation of finite chains and numerical evaluation of the Pfaffian, a method specific to the transverse field Ising chain. The latter method is used for a phenomenological study of the asymmetric broadening as well as an evaluation of fitting functions for the broadened lineshapes.

Thermal form-factor expansion of the dynamical two-point functions of local operators in integrable quantum chains

Frank Göhmann, Karol Kajetan Kozlowski, Mikhail D. Minin

Abstract Evaluating a lattice path integral in terms of spectral data and matrix elements pertaining to a suitably defined quantum transfer matrix, we derive form-factor series expansions for the dynamical two-point functions of arbitrary local operators in fundamental Yang–Baxter integrable lattice models at finite temperature. The summands in the series are parameterised by solutions of the Bethe Ansatz equations associated with the eigenvalue problem of the quantum transfer matrix. We elaborate on the example of the XXZ chain for which the solutions of the Bethe Ansatz equations are sufficiently well understood in certain limiting cases. We work out in detail the case of the spin-zero operators in the antiferromagnetic massive regime at zero temperature. In this case the thermal form-factor series turn into series of multiple integrals with fully explicit integrands. These integrands factorize into an operator-dependent part, determined by the so-called Fermionic basis, and a part which we call the universal weight as it is the same for all spin-zero operators. The universal weight can be inferred from our previous work. The operator-dependent part is rather simple for the most interesting short-range operators. It is determined by two functions ρ and ω for which we obtain explicit expressions in the considered case. As an application we rederive the known explicit form-factor series for the two-point function of the magnetization operator and obtain analogous expressions for the magnetic current and the energy operators.

Integral equations and long-time asymptotics for finite-temperature Ising chain correlation functions

Benjamin Doyon, Adam Gamsa

This work concerns the dynamical two-point spin correlation functions of the transverse Ising quantum chain at finite (non-zero) temperature, in the universal region near the quantum critical point. They are correlation functions of twist fields in the massive Majorana fermion quantum field theory. At finite temperature, these are known to satisfy a set of integrable partial differential equations, including the sinh–Gordon equation. We apply the classical inverse scattering method to study them, finding that the 'initial scattering data' corresponding to the correlation functions are simply related to the one-particle finite-temperature form factors calculated recently by one of the persent authors. The set of linear integral equations (Gelfand–Levitan–Marchenko equations) associated with the inverse scattering problem then gives, in principle, the two-point functions at all space and time separations, and all temperatures. From these, we evaluate the long-time asymptotic expansion 'near the light cone', in the region where the difference between the space and time separations is of the order of the correlation length.

Finite volume form factors and correlation functions at finite temperature

Balázs Pozsgay

In this thesis we investigate finite size effects in 1+1 dimensional integrable QFT. In particular we consider matrix elements of local operators (finite volume form factors) and vacuum expectation values and correlation functions at finite temperature. In the first part of the thesis we give a complete description of the finite volume form factors in terms of the infinite volume form factors (solutions of the bootstrap program) and the S-matrix of the theory. The calculations are correct to all orders in the inverse of the volume, only exponentially decaying (residual) finite size effects are neglected. We also consider matrix elements with disconnected pieces and determine the general rule for evaluating such contributions in a finite volume. The analytic results are tested against numerical data obtained by the truncated conformal space approach in the Lee-Yang model and the Ising model in a magnetic field. In a separate section we also evaluate the leading exponential correction (the $μ$-term) associated to multi-particle energies and matrix elements. In the second part of the thesis we show that finite volume factors can be used to derive a systematic low-temperature expansion for correlation functions at finite temperature. In the case of vacuum expectation values the series is worked out up to the third non-trivial order and a complete agreement with the LeClair-Mussardo formula is observed. A preliminary treatment of the two-point function is also given by considering the first nontrivial contributions.
