Abstract

A nonequilibrium theory describing the charge qubit dynamics measured by a quantum point contact is developed based on Schwinger-Keldysh's approach. Using the real-time diagrammatic technique, we derive the master equation to all orders in perturbation expansions. The non-Markovian processes in the qubit dynamics is naturally taken into account. The qubit decoherence, in particular, the influence of the tunneling-electron fluctuation in the quantum point contact with a longer correlation time comparing to the time scale of the qubit dynamics, is studied in the framework. We consider the Lorentzian-type spectral density to characterize the channel mixture of the electron-tunneling processes induced by the measurement, and determine the correlation time scale of the tunneling-electron fluctuation. The result shows that as the quantum point contact is casted with a narrower profile of the spectral density, tunneling electrons propagate in a longer correlation time scale and lead to the non-Markovian processes of the qubit dynamics. The qubit electron in the charge qubit can be driven coherently. The quantum point contact measurement with the minimum deviation of the electron-tunneling processes prevents the qubit state from the decoherence.

Decoherence induced by electron accumulation in a quantum measurement of charge qubits

Ming‐Tsung Lee, Wei-Min Zhang

In this paper, we study the quantum decoherence induced by accumulation of electron tunnelings during the quantum measurement of a charge qubit. The charge qubit is a single electron confined in coupled quantum dots. The measurement of the qubit states is performed using a quantum point contact. A set of master equations for qubit states is derived within a nonequilibrium perturbation to the equilibrium reservoir due to the electron accumulation between the source and drain of the quantum point contact. The quantum decoherence of the qubit states arose from the electron accumulation during the measurement is explored in this framework, and several interesting results on charge qubit decoherence are obtained.

Dynamics of a double quantum dot charge qubit measured by a quantum point contact

Wei Cui

Quantum measurement always disturbs the quantum system being measured, which is known as measurement-induced backaction. We consider a specific model, a double quantum dot charge qubit measured by a nearby quantum point contact. We explore the evolution by deriving a master equation. The advantages of this master equation are (i) it has the Lindblad form and the non-Markovian effects are embodied in the time-dependent coefficients, (ii) the tunnelling and decay effect can be clearly understood in the master equation, and (iii) it can be further easily controlled by manipulate the Hamiltonian.

Non-Markovian decoherence theory for a double-dot charge qubit

Matisse Wei-Yuan Tu, Wei-Min Zhang

In this paper, we develop a nonperturbation theory for describing decoherence dynamics of electron charges in a double quantum dot gated by electrodes. We extend the Feynman-Vernon influence functional theory to fermionic environments and derive an exact master equation for the reduced density matrix of electrons in the double dot for a general spectral density at arbitrary temperature and bias. We then investigate the decoherence dynamics of the double-dot charge qubit with backreaction of the reservoirs being fully taken into account. Time-dependent fluctuations and leakage effects induced from the dot-reservoir coupling are explicitly explored. The charge qubit dynamics from the Markovian to non-Markovian regime is systematically studied under various manipulating conditions. The decay behavior of charge qubit coherence and the corresponding relaxation time ${T}_{1}$ and dephasing time ${T}_{2}$ are analyzed in detail.

Exact Master Equation and Non-Markovian Decoherence for Quantum Dot Quantum Computing

Ming‐Tsung Lee, Wei-Min Zhang

In this article, we report the recent progress on decoherence dynamics of electrons in quantum dot quantum computing systems using the exact master equation we derived recently based on the Feynman–Vernon influence functional approach. The exact master equation is valid for general nanostructure systems coupled to multi-reservoirs with arbitrary spectral densities, temperatures and biases. We take the double quantum dot charge qubit system as a specific example, and discuss in details the decoherence dynamics of the charge qubit under coherence controls. The decoherence dynamics risen from the entanglement between the system and the environment is mainly non-Markovian. We further discuss the decoherence of the double-dot charge qubit induced by quantum point contact (QPC) measurement where the master equation is re-derived using the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green function technique due to the non-linear coupling between the charge qubit and the QPC. The non-Markovian decoherence dynamics in the measurement processes is extensively discussed as well.

Measurements of a periodically driving qubit using a quantum point contact

Haixia Wang, Yin Wen, Wang Fang-Wei

Using the method developed by Gurvitz [1996 Phys. Rev. B 53 15932], we obtained the Bloch-type rate equations describing the entire system of a periodically driving qubit monitored by a quantum point contact detector. The results demonstrate that the isolated qubit can be kept in its initial state with a large driving frequency due to more difficult electron tunneling in qubit, and this initial state can always be measured at a small measurement-induced decoherence rate during a short time.

Interaction-dependent instability of quantum-point contact detector for charge-qubit: exact theorem

Gleb A. Skorobagatko

The low-temperature limit of charge qubit decoherence due to its Coulomb interaction with electrons tunneling through Luttinger liquid quantum-point contact (QPC) is investigated. The study is focused on quantum detector properties of Luttinger liquid QPC. Efficiency of Luttinger liquid qurrent-carrying quantum point-contact (QPC) as quantum detector for the coupled charge qubit quantum state is characterized by the ratio of decoherence time and the acquisition of information time and how both depend on electron-electron interaction has remained an interesting open question. Here this question is answered in its most challenging zero- (and near zero-) temperature realization where the latter two characteristic time-scales, both tends to zero shadowing true picture of quantum detection in the zero-temperature limit. In order to resolve this difficulty two important mathematical statements (S-theorem and S-lemma) have been proven here for the first time. As the result, it was established here that low-temperature properties of QPC quantum detector with 1D electrodes are defined explicitly by the competition between two different time-scales those reflecting two different types of physical processes in the system. These processes are: i) the orthogonality catastrophe-type decoherence of charge-qubit, one is analogous to the decay of Kondo-resonance narrowed by QPC plasmons; ii) Kane-Fisher suppression of the electron tunneling through Luttinger liquid QPC resulting in the divergence of electron tunneling time. In particular, it has been found that at temperatures close to zero there exists a certain well-defined threshold value $ g=g_{cr} $ of Luttinger liquid correlation parameter which serves as a sharp boundary between region of good (or even perfect) quantum detection at $ g<g_{cr} $ and the region of quantum detector break down where $ g>g_{cr} $.
