Measurements of a periodically driving qubit using a quantum point contact

Abstract

Using the method developed by Gurvitz [1996 Phys. Rev. B 53 15932], we obtained the Bloch-type rate equations describing the entire system of a periodically driving qubit monitored by a quantum point contact detector. The results demonstrate that the isolated qubit can be kept in its initial state with a large driving frequency due to more difficult electron tunneling in qubit, and this initial state can always be measured at a small measurement-induced decoherence rate during a short time.

Relaxation and the Zeno Effect in Qubit Measurements

S. A. Gurvitz, Leonid Evgenevich Fedichkin, Dmitry Mozyrsky +1 more

We consider a qubit interacting with its environment and continuously monitored by a detector represented by a point contact. Bloch-type equations describing the entire system of the qubit, the environment, and the detector are derived. Using these equations we evaluate the detector current and its noise spectrum in terms of the decoherence and relaxation rates of the qubit. Simple expressions are obtained that show how these quantities can be accurately measured. We demonstrate that due to interaction with the environment, the measurement can never localize a qubit even for infinite decoherence rate.

Non-Markovian suppression of charge qubit decoherence in the quantum point contact measurement

Ming‐Tsung Lee, Wei-Min Zhang

A nonequilibrium theory describing the charge qubit dynamics measured by a quantum point contact is developed based on Schwinger-Keldysh's approach. Using the real-time diagrammatic technique, we derive the master equation to all orders in perturbation expansions. The non-Markovian processes in the qubit dynamics is naturally taken into account. The qubit decoherence, in particular, the influence of the tunneling-electron fluctuation in the quantum point contact with a longer correlation time comparing to the time scale of the qubit dynamics, is studied in the framework. We consider the Lorentzian-type spectral density to characterize the channel mixture of the electron-tunneling processes induced by the measurement, and determine the correlation time scale of the tunneling-electron fluctuation. The result shows that as the quantum point contact is casted with a narrower profile of the spectral density, tunneling electrons propagate in a longer correlation time scale and lead to the non-Markovian processes of the qubit dynamics. The qubit electron in the charge qubit can be driven coherently. The quantum point contact measurement with the minimum deviation of the electron-tunneling processes prevents the qubit state from the decoherence.

Hybrid double-dot qubit measurement with a quantum point contact

Lei Yan, Wen Yin, Fangwei Wang

We present the measurement of a hybrid double-dot qubit using a quantum point contact (QPC). To study the dynamics, we derive the rate equations of the entire system. Numerical results show that QPC current can directly reflect the evolution of the qubit. By adjusting Coulomb interaction, energy mismatch, and QPC tunneling rate, the efficiency and dephasing time can be improved. In addition, the initial state with a hybrid triplet state is superior to that with the purely triplet states on the efficiency. Moreover, the decoherence time is estimated on the magnitude of a microsecond, long enough to implement quantum operations.

Decoherence induced by electron accumulation in a quantum measurement of charge qubits

Ming‐Tsung Lee, Wei-Min Zhang

In this paper, we study the quantum decoherence induced by accumulation of electron tunnelings during the quantum measurement of a charge qubit. The charge qubit is a single electron confined in coupled quantum dots. The measurement of the qubit states is performed using a quantum point contact. A set of master equations for qubit states is derived within a nonequilibrium perturbation to the equilibrium reservoir due to the electron accumulation between the source and drain of the quantum point contact. The quantum decoherence of the qubit states arose from the electron accumulation during the measurement is explored in this framework, and several interesting results on charge qubit decoherence are obtained.

Entanglement of a double dot with a quantum point contact

Michael Steiner, R. W. Rendell

Entanglement between a particle and a detector is known to be inherent in the measurement process. Gurvitz recently analyzed the coupling of an electron in a double dot (DD) to a quantum point contact (QPC) detector. In this paper we examine the dynamics of entanglement that result between the DD and QPC. The rate of entanglement is optimized as a function of coupling when the electron is initially in one of the dots. It decreases asymptotically towards zero with increased coupling. The opposite behavior is observed when the DD is initially in a superposition: the rate of entanglement increases unboundedly as the coupling is increased. The possibility that there are conditions for which measurement occurs versus entanglement is considered.

Qubit measurement by a quantum point contact: A quantum Langevin-equation approach

Bing Dong, Norman J. M. Horing, X. L. Lei

We employ a quantum Langevin-equation approach to establish Bloch-type dynamical equations, on a fully microscopic basis, to investigate the measurement of the state of a coupled quantum dot qubit by a nearby quantum point contact. The ensuing Bloch equations allow us to analyze qubit relaxation and decoherence induced by measurement, and also to determine the noise spectrum of the meter output current with the help of a quantum regression theorem, at arbitrary bias voltage and temperature. Our analyses attempt to provide a clear resolution of a recent debate concerning the occurrence of a quantum oscillation peak in the noise spectrum.
