Phase Separation and Flux Quantization in the Doped Quantum Dimer Model on Square and Triangular Lattices

Abstract

The doped two-dimensional quantum dimer model is investigated by numerical techniques on the square and triangular lattices, with significantly different results. On the square lattice, at small enough doping, there is always a phase separation between an insulating valence-bond solid and a uniform superfluid phase, whereas on the triangular lattice, doping leads directly to a uniform superfluid in a large portion of the resonating-valence-bond (RVB) phase. Under an applied Aharonov-Bohm flux, the superfluid exhibits quantization in terms of half-flux quanta, consistent with Q=2e elementary charge quanta in transport properties.

Doping quantum dimer models on the square lattice

Didier Poilblanc, Fabien Alet, Federico Becca +3 more

A family of models is proposed to describe the motion of holes in a fluctuating quantum dimer background on the square lattice. Following Castelnovo et al. [Ann. Phys. (N.Y.) 318, 316 (2005)], a generalized Rokhsar-Kivelson Hamiltonian at finite doping which can be mapped on a doped interacting classical dimer model is constructed. A simple physical extension of this model is also considered. Using numerical computations and simple considerations based on the above exact mapping, we determine the phase diagram of the model showing a number of quantum phases typical of a doped Mott insulator. The two-hole correlation function generically exhibits short-range or long-range algebraic correlations in the solid (columnar) and liquid (critical) phases of the model, respectively. Evidence for an extended region of a doped valence bond solid phase exhibiting holon pairing but no phase separation is given. In contrast, we show that hole deconfinement occurs in the staggered dimer phase.

Resonating Valence Bond Phase in the Triangular Lattice Quantum Dimer Model

Roderich Moessner, Shivaji L. Sondhi

We study the quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice, which is expected to describe the singlet dynamics of frustrated Heisenberg models in phases where valence bond configurations dominate their physics. We find, in contrast to the square lattice, that there is a truly short ranged resonating valence bond phase with no gapless excitations and with deconfined, gapped, spinons for a finite range of parameters. We also establish the presence of crystalline dimer phases.

Properties of Holons in the Quantum Dimer Model

Didier Poilblanc

I introduce a doped two-dimensional quantum dimer model describing a doped Mott insulator and retaining the original Fermi statistics of the electrons. This model shows a rich phase diagram including a d-wave hole-pair unconventional superconductor at small enough doping and a bosonic superfluid at large doping. The hole kinetic energy is shown to favor binding of topological defects to the bare fermionic holons turning them into bosons, in agreement with arguments based on resonating valence bond wave function. Results are discussed in the context of cuprate superconductors.

Statistical Transmutation in Doped Quantum Dimer Models

Carlos Alberto Lamas, Arnaud Ralko, D. C. Cabra +2 more

We prove a "statistical transmutation" symmetry of doped quantum dimer models on the square, triangular, and kagome lattices: the energy spectrum is invariant under a simultaneous change of statistics (i.e., bosonic into fermionic or vice versa) of the holes and of the signs of all the dimer resonance loops. This exact transformation enables us to define the duality equivalence between doped quantum dimer Hamiltonians and provides the analytic framework to analyze dynamical statistical transmutations. We investigate numerically the doping of the triangular quantum dimer model with special focus on the topological Z(2) dimer liquid. Doping leads to four (instead of two for the square lattice) inequivalent families of Hamiltonians. Competition between phase separation, superfluidity, supersolidity, and fermionic phases is investigated in the four families.

Reduced density matrices and topological order in a quantum dimer model

Shunsuke Furukawa, Grégoire Misguich, Masaki Oshikawa

Resonating valence bond (RVB) liquids in two dimensions are believed to exhibit topological order and to admit no local order parameter of any kind. This is a defining property of "liquids" but it has been explicitly confirmed only in a few exactly solvable models. In this paper, we investigate the quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice. It possesses an RVB-type liquid phase, however, for which the absence of a local order parameter has not been proved. We examine the question numerically with a measure based on reduced density matrices. We find a scaling of the measure which strongly supports the absence of any local order parameter.

Competing orders II: A spin on the dimer model

Leon Balents, Lorenz Bartosch, A. A. Burkov +2 more

We study the phases of doped spin S=1/2 quantum antiferromagnets on the square lattice, as they evolve from paramagnetic Mott insulators with valence bond solid (VBS) order at zero doping, to superconductors at moderate doping. The interplay between density wave/VBS order and superconductivity is efficiently described by the quantum dimer model, which acts as an effective theory for the total spin S=0 sector. We extend the dimer model to include fermionic S=1/2 excitations, and show that its mean-field, static gauge field saddle points have projective symmetries (PSGs) similar to those of `slave' particle U(1) and SU(2) gauge theories. We account for the non-perturbative effects of gauge fluctuations by a duality mapping of the S=0 dimer model. The dual theory of vortices has a PSG identical to that found in a previous paper (L. Balents et al., cond-mat/0408329) by a duality analysis of bosons on the square lattice. The previous theory therefore also describes fluctuations across superconducting, supersolid and Mott insulating phases of the present electronic model. Finally, with the aim of describing neutron scattering experiments, we present a phenomenological model for collective S=1 excitations and their coupling to superflow and density wave fluctuations.
