Resonating Valence Bond Phase in the Triangular Lattice Quantum Dimer Model

Abstract

We study the quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice, which is expected to describe the singlet dynamics of frustrated Heisenberg models in phases where valence bond configurations dominate their physics. We find, in contrast to the square lattice, that there is a truly short ranged resonating valence bond phase with no gapless excitations and with deconfined, gapped, spinons for a finite range of parameters. We also establish the presence of crystalline dimer phases.

Three-dimensional resonating-valence-bond liquids and their excitations

Roderich Moessner, Shivaji L. Sondhi

We show that there are two types of resonating-valence-bond (RVB) liquid phases present in three-dimensional quantum dimer models, corresponding to the deconfining phases of $U(1)$ and ${Z}_{2}$ gauge theories in $d=3+1.$ The former is found on the bipartite cubic lattice and is the generalization of the critical point in the square lattice quantum dimer model found originally by Rokhsar and Kivelson. The latter exists on the nonbipartite face-centered cubic lattice and generalizes the RVB phase found earlier by us on the triangular lattice. We discuss the excitation spectrum and the nature of the ordering in both cases. Both phases exhibit gapped spinons. In the $U(1)$ case we find a collective, linearly dispersing, transverse excitation, which is the photon of the low-energy Maxwell Lagrangian and we identify the ordering as quantum order in Wen's sense. In the ${Z}_{2}$ case all collective excitations are gapped and, as in $d=2,$ the low-energy description of this topologically ordered state is the purely topological BF action. As a byproduct of this analysis, we unearth a further gapless excitation, the pi0n, in the square lattice quantum dimer model at its critical point.

Multicolored quantum dimer models, resonating valence-bond states, color visons, and the triangular-lattice t2g spin-orbital system

Bruce Normand

The spin-orbital model for triply degenerate ${t}_{2g}$ electrons on a triangular lattice has been shown to be dominated by dimers. The phase diagram contains both strongly resonating, compound spin-orbital dimer states and quasistatic, spin-singlet valence-bond (VB) states. To elucidate the nature of the true ground state in these different regimes, the model is mapped to a number of quantum dimer models (QDMs), each of which has three dimer colors. The generic multicolored QDM, illustrated for the two- and three-color cases, possesses a topological color structure, ``color vison'' excitations, and broad regions of resonating VB phases. The specific models are analyzed to gain further insight into the likely ground states in the superexchange and direct-exchange limits of the electronic Hamiltonian, and they suggest a strong tendency toward VB order in all cases.

Phase diagram of the hexagonal lattice quantum dimer model

Roderich Moessner, Shivaji L. Sondhi, Premala Chandra

We discuss the phase diagram of the quantum dimer model on the hexagonal (honeycomb) lattice. In addition to the columnar and staggered valence-bond solids which have been discussed in previous work, we establish the existence of a plaquette valence-bond solid. The transition between the plaquette and columnar phases at $v/t=\ensuremath{-}0.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05$ is argued to be first order. We note that this model should describe valence-bond-dominated phases of frustrated Heisenberg models on the hexagonal lattice and discuss its relation to recent exact diagonalization work by Fouet et al. on the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ model on the same lattice. Our results also shed light on the properties of the transverse field Ising antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice and the classical Ising antiferromagnet on the stacked triangular lattice, which are related to dimer models by duality.

Resonating Valence Bond Liquid Physics on the Triangular Lattice

Roderich Moessner, S. L. Sondhi

We give an account of the short-range RVB liquid phase on the triangular lattice, starting from an elementary introduction to quantum dimer models, including details of the overlap expansion used to generate them. The fate of its topological degeneracy under duality is discussed, as well as recent developments and its possible relevance for quantum computing.

Spin-orbital resonating valence bond liquid on a triangular lattice: Evidence from finite-cluster diagonalization

Jiří Chaloupka, Andrzej M. Oleś

We investigate the ground state of the ${d}^{1}$ spin-orbital model for triply degenerate ${t}_{2g}$ orbitals on a triangular lattice that unifies intrinsic frustration of spin and orbital interactions with geometrical frustration. Using full or Lanczos exact diagonalization of finite clusters, we establish that the ground state of the spin-orbital model that interpolates between superexchange and direct exchange interactions on the bonds is characterized by valence-bond correlations. In the absence of Hund's exchange the model describes a competition between various possible valence-bond states. By considering the clusters with open boundary conditions we demonstrate that orbital interactions are always frustrated, but this frustration is removed by pronounced spin singlet correlations that coexist with dimer orbital correlations supporting them. Such local configurations contribute to the disordered ground states found for the clusters with periodic boundary conditions that interpolate between a highly resonating, dimer-based, entangled spin-orbital liquid phase and a valence-bond state with completely static spin-singlet states. We argue that these states are also realized for the infinite lattice and anticipate that pronounced transitions between different regimes found for particular geometries will turn out to smooth crossovers in the properties of the spin-orbital liquid in the thermodynamic limit. Finally, we provide evidence that the resonating spin-orbital liquid phase involves entangled states on the bonds. In such a phase classical considerations based on the mean-field theory cannot be used, spin exchange interactions do not determine spin bond correlations, and quantum fluctuations play a crucial role in the ground states and magnetic transitions.

Critical colored-RVB states in the frustrated quantum Heisenberg model on the square lattice

Didier Poilblanc, Matthieu Mambrini, Sylvain Capponi

We consider a family of SU(2)-symmetric Projected Entangled Paired States (PEPS) on the square lattice, defining colored-Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) states, to describe the quantum disordered phase of the J_1-J_2 J 1 − J 2 frustrated Heisenberg model. For J_2/J_1\sim 0.55 J 2 / J 1 ∼ 0.55 we show the emergence of critical (algebraic) dimer-dimer correlations – typical of Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) points of quantum dimer models on bipartite lattices – while, simultaneously, the spin-spin correlation length remains short. Our findings are consistent with a spin liquid or a weak Valence Bond Crystal in the neighborhood of an RK point.
