Abstract

We consider a family of SU(2)-symmetric Projected Entangled Paired States (PEPS) on the square lattice, defining colored-Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) states, to describe the quantum disordered phase of the J_1-J_2 J 1 − J 2 frustrated Heisenberg model. For J_2/J_1\sim 0.55 J 2 / J 1 ∼ 0.55 we show the emergence of critical (algebraic) dimer-dimer correlations – typical of Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) points of quantum dimer models on bipartite lattices – while, simultaneously, the spin-spin correlation length remains short. Our findings are consistent with a spin liquid or a weak Valence Bond Crystal in the neighborhood of an RK point.

Novel constructive method for the quantum dimer model in spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets with frustration on a diamond-like-decorated square lattice

Yuhei Hirose, Akihide Oguchi, Masafumi Tamura +1 more

We study spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a diamond-like-decorated square lattice. The diamond-like-decorated square lattice is a lattice in which the bonds in a square lattice are replaced with diamond units. The diamond unit has two types of antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, and the ratio λ of the diagonal bond strength to that of the other four edges controls the frustration strength. For 0.974 < λ < 2, the present system has a nontrivial macroscopic degeneracy, which is called the macroscopically degenerated tetramer-dimer (MDTD) states. The MDTD states are identical to the Hilbert space of the Rokhsar–Kivelson (RK) quantum dimer model (QDM). By introducing further neighbor couplings in the MDTD states, we calculate the second-order effective Hamiltonian, which is exactly the same as the square-lattice QDM with a finite hopping amplitude t and dimer-dimer interaction v. Furthermore, we calculate v/|t| as a function of the ratio λ in the Heisenberg model and examine which phases of the square-lattice QDM appear in our obtained states. Our obtained QDM has a region where λ exhibits a finite hopping amplitude (|t| > 0) and repulsive interaction between dimers (v > 0). This suggests the possibility of realizing the resonating valence bond (RVB) state because the RVB state is obtained at v = |t|, which is known as the RK point.

Topological Z2 resonating-valence-bond spin liquid on the square lattice

Ji-Yao Chen, Didier Poilblanc

A one-parameter family of long-range resonating-valence-bond (RVB) state on the square lattice was previously proposed to describe a critical spin liquid (SL) phase of the spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg model. We provide evidence that this RVB state in fact also realizes a topological (long-range entangled) ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ SL, limited by two transitions to critical SL phases. The topological phase is naturally connected to the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge symmetry of the local tensor. This Rapid Communication shows that, on one hand, spin-1/2 topological SL with ${C}_{4v}$ point-group symmetry and $SU(2)$ spin rotation symmetry exists on the square lattice and, on the other hand, criticality and nonbipartiteness are compatible. We also point out that strong similarities between our phase diagram and the ones of classical interacting dimer models suggest both can be described by similar Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions. This scenario is further supported by the analysis of the one-dimensional boundary state. Forms of parent Hamiltonians hosting the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ SL are suggested.

Generalized quantum dimer model applied to the frustrated Heisenberg model on the square lattice: Emergence of a mixed columnar-plaquette phase

Arnaud Ralko, Matthieu Mambrini, Didier Poilblanc

Aiming to describe frustrated quantum magnets with nonmagnetic singlet ground states, we have extended the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) loop expansion to derive a generalized quantum dimer model containing only connected terms up to arbitrary order. For the square-lattice frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet (${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{3}$ model), an expansion up to eighth order shows that the leading correction to the original RK model comes from dimer moves on length-6 loops. This model free of the original sign problem is treated by advanced numerical techniques. The results suggest that a rotationally anisotropic plaquette phase [A. Ralko, D. Poilblanc, and R. Moessner, Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 037201 (2008)] is the ground state of the Heisenberg model in the parameter region of maximum frustration.

Quantum disordered ground states in frustrated antiferromagnets with multiple ring exchange interactions

Satoshi Fujimoto

We present a certain class of two-dimensional frustrated quantum Heisenberg spin systems with multiple ring exchange interactions which are rigorously demonstrated to have quantum disordered ground states without magnetic long-range order. The systems considered in this paper are $s=1∕2$ antiferromagnets on a honeycomb and square lattices, and an $s=1$ antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice. We find that for a particular set of parameter values, the ground state is a short-range resonating valence bond state or a valence bond crystal state. It is shown that these systems are closely related to the quantum dimer model introduced by Rokhsar and Kivelson as an effective low-energy theory for valence bond states.

Properties of resonating-valence-bond spin liquids and critical dimer models

Ying Tang, Anders W. Sandvik, Christopher L. Henley

We use Monte Carlo simulations to study properties of Anderson's resonating-valence-bond (RVB) spin-liquid state on the square lattice (i.e., the equal superposition of all pairing of spins into nearest-neighbor singlet pairs) and compare with the classical dimer model (CDM). The latter system also corresponds to the ground state of the Rokhsar-Kivelson quantum dimer model at its critical point. We find that, although spin-spin correlations decay exponentially in the RVB, four-spin valence-bond-solid correlations are critical, qualitatively like the well-known dimer-dimer correlations of the CDM, but decaying more slowly (as $1/{r}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ with $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\approx}1.20$, compared with $\ensuremath{\alpha}=2$ for the CDM). We also compute the distribution of monomer (defect) pair separations, which decay by a larger exponent in the RVB than in the CDM. We further study both models in their different winding-number sectors and evaluate the relative weights of different sectors. Like the CDM, all the observed RVB behaviors can be understood in the framework of a mapping to a ``height'' model characterized by a gradient-squared stiffness constant $K$. Four independent measurements consistently show a value ${K}_{\mathrm{RVB}}\ensuremath{\approx}1.6{K}_{\mathrm{CDM}}$, with the same kinds of numerical evaluations of ${K}_{\mathrm{CDM}}$ giving results in agreement with the rigorously known value ${K}_{\mathrm{CDM}}=\ensuremath{\pi}/16$. The background of a nonzero winding-number gradient $W/L$ introduces spatial anisotropies and an increase in the effective $K$, both of which can be understood as a consequence of anharmonic terms in the height-model free energy, which are of relevance to the recently proposed scenario of ``Cantor deconfinement'' in extended quantum dimer models. In addition to the standard case of short bonds only, we also studied ensembles in which fourth-neighbor (bipartite) bonds are allowed at a density controlled by a tunable fugacity, resulting (as expected) in a smooth reduction of $K$.

Simulating a two-dimensional frustrated spin system with fermionic resonating-valence-bond states

Chung-Pin Chou, Hong‐Yi Chen

The frustrated Heisenberg ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ model on a square lattice is numerically investigated by variational Monte Carlo simulations. We propose an antiferromagnetic fermion resonating-valence-bond (AF-fRVB) state that has the ability to examine the entire phase diagram in the ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ model. Two phase transition points, the second order around ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.45$ and the first order around ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.6$, can be extracted more clearly than the conventional bosonic RVB state. At the maximally frustrated point $({J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.5)$, the AF-fRVB state shows the variational ground-state energy in the thermodynamic limit very close to the one estimated by the projected entangled pair state at the largest bond dimension available. On the other hand, in the frustrated regime $0.4\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\le}0.5$, AF-fRVB states with $\text{ext}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{s}_{2}$ (using the terminology in the field of iron-based superconductors) and ${d}_{xy}$ pairing symmetries are degenerate in the thermodynamic limit, implying the existence of gapless Dirac excitations in the spinon spectrum.
