Abstract

A family of models is proposed to describe the motion of holes in a fluctuating quantum dimer background on the square lattice. Following Castelnovo et al. [Ann. Phys. (N.Y.) 318, 316 (2005)], a generalized Rokhsar-Kivelson Hamiltonian at finite doping which can be mapped on a doped interacting classical dimer model is constructed. A simple physical extension of this model is also considered. Using numerical computations and simple considerations based on the above exact mapping, we determine the phase diagram of the model showing a number of quantum phases typical of a doped Mott insulator. The two-hole correlation function generically exhibits short-range or long-range algebraic correlations in the solid (columnar) and liquid (critical) phases of the model, respectively. Evidence for an extended region of a doped valence bond solid phase exhibiting holon pairing but no phase separation is given. In contrast, we show that hole deconfinement occurs in the staggered dimer phase.

Plaquette phase of the square-lattice quantum dimer model: Quantum Monte Carlo calculations

Olav F. Syljuåsen

The plaquette phase of the square-lattice quantum dimer model is studied using a continuous-time reptation quantum Monte Carlo method for lattices of sizes up to $48\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}48$ sites. We determine the location of the phase transition between the columnar and plaquette phases to occur at ${V}_{c}∕J=0.60\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05$ which is significantly larger than inferred from previous exact diagonalization studies on smaller lattices. Off diagonal correlation functions are obtained. They exhibit long-range order in the plaquette phase but not at the Rokhsar-Kivelson point. We also observe significant finite-size corrections to scaling for the transition between the plaquette phase and the critical resonating valence bond liquid. This study demonstrates the importance of understanding finite-size effects when considering critical properties of the square-lattice quantum dimer model.

Quantum criticality, lines of fixed points, and phase separation in doped two-dimensional quantum dimer models

Stefanos Papanikolaou, Erik Luijten, Eduardo Fradkin

We study phase diagrams of a class of doped quantum dimer models on the square lattice with ground-state wave functions whose amplitudes have the form of the Gibbs weights of a classical doped dimer model. In this dimer model, parallel neighboring dimers have attractive interactions, whereas neighboring holes either do not interact or have a repulsive interaction. We investigate the behavior of this system via analytic methods and by Monte Carlo simulations. At zero doping, we confirm the existence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition from a quantum critical phase to a columnar phase. At low hole densities, we find a dimer-hole liquid phase and a columnar phase, separated by a phase boundary which is a line of critical points with varying exponents. We demonstrate that this line ends at a multicritical point where the transition becomes first order and the system phase separates. The first-order transition coexistence curve is shown to become unstable with respect to more complex inhomogeneous phases in the presence of direct hole-hole interactions. We also use a variational approach to determine the spectrum of low-lying density fluctuations in the dimer-hole fluid phase.

Interacting Classical Dimers on the Square Lattice

Fabien Alet, Jesper Lykke Jacobsen, Grégoire Misguich +3 more

We study a model of close-packed dimers on the square lattice with a nearest neighbor interaction between parallel dimers. This model corresponds to the classical limit of quantum dimer models [D. S. Rokhsar and S. A. Kivelson, Phys. Rev. Lett. 61, 2376 (1988)]. By means of Monte Carlo and transfer matrix calculations, we show that this system undergoes a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition separating a low temperature ordered phase where dimers are aligned in columns from a high temperature critical phase with continuously varying exponents. This is understood by constructing the corresponding Coulomb gas, whose coupling constant is computed numerically. We also discuss doped models and implications on the finite-temperature phase diagram of quantum dimer models.

Putting competing orders in their place near the Mott transition. II. The doped quantum dimer model

Leon Balents, Lorenz Bartosch, A. A. Burkov +2 more

We study the phases of doped spin $S=1∕2$ quantum antiferromagnets on the square lattice as they evolve from paramagnetic Mott insulators with valence bond solid (VBS) order at doping $\ensuremath{\delta}=0$ to superconductors at moderate $\ensuremath{\delta}$. The interplay between density-wave and VBS order and superconductivity is efficiently described by the quantum dimer model, which acts as an effective theory for the total spin $S=0$ sector. We extend the dimer model to include fermionic $S=1∕2$ excitations and show that its mean-field, static gauge-field saddle points have projective symmetries (PSG's) similar to those of ``slave''-particle U(1) and SU(2) gauge theories. We account for the nonperturbative effects of gauge fluctuations by a duality mapping of the $S=0$ dimer model. The dual theory of vortices has a PSG identical to that found in a previous paper [L. Balents et al., preceding paper, Phys. Rev. B 71, 144508 (2005)] by a duality analysis of bosons on the square lattice. The previous theory therefore also describes fluctuations across superconducting, supersolid, and Mott insulating phases of the present electronic model. Finally, with the aim of describing neutron scattering experiments, we present a phenomenological model for collective $S=1$ excitations and their coupling to superflow and density-wave fluctuations.

Columnar dimer and plaquette resonating-valence-bond orders in the quantum dimer model

P. W. Leung, K. C. Chiu, Karl J. Runge

We study the nature of the ground state of the quantum dimer model proposed by Rokhsar and Kivelson by diagonalizing the Hamiltonian of the model on square lattices of size L\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}L, where L\ensuremath{\leqslant}8, with periodic boundary conditions. Finite-size scaling studies of the columnar order parameter and the low lying excitation spectrum show no evidence of a dimer liquid state in any finite region of the zero temperature phase diagram. In addition, we find evidence of a transition from the columnar dimer state to an intermediate state at a negative value of V/J. This state is consistent with the plaquette resonating-valence-bond state. The energy gap of this state vanishes as a power law of L. It exhibits columnar dimer order, but has disorder within the dimer columns. This state persists up to V/J1, and the system changes to a dimer liquid state only at V/J=1. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Generic Mixed Columnar-Plaquette Phases in Rokhsar-Kivelson Models

Arnaud Ralko, Didier Poilblanc, Roderich Moessner

We revisit the phase diagram of Rokhsar-Kivelson models, which are used in fields such as superconductivity, frustrated magnetism, cold bosons, and the physics of Josephson junction arrays. From an extended height effective theory, we show that one of two simple generic phase diagrams contains a mixed phase that interpolates continuously between columnar and plaquette states. For the square lattice quantum dimer model we present evidence from exact diagonalization and Green's function Monte Carlo techniques that this scenario is realized, by combining an analysis of the excitation gaps of different symmetry sectors with information on plaquette structure factors. This presents a natural framework for resolving the disagreement between previous studies.
