Abstract

We study the phases of doped spin $S=1∕2$ quantum antiferromagnets on the square lattice as they evolve from paramagnetic Mott insulators with valence bond solid (VBS) order at doping $\ensuremath{\delta}=0$ to superconductors at moderate $\ensuremath{\delta}$. The interplay between density-wave and VBS order and superconductivity is efficiently described by the quantum dimer model, which acts as an effective theory for the total spin $S=0$ sector. We extend the dimer model to include fermionic $S=1∕2$ excitations and show that its mean-field, static gauge-field saddle points have projective symmetries (PSG's) similar to those of ``slave''-particle U(1) and SU(2) gauge theories. We account for the nonperturbative effects of gauge fluctuations by a duality mapping of the $S=0$ dimer model. The dual theory of vortices has a PSG identical to that found in a previous paper [L. Balents et al., preceding paper, Phys. Rev. B 71, 144508 (2005)] by a duality analysis of bosons on the square lattice. The previous theory therefore also describes fluctuations across superconducting, supersolid, and Mott insulating phases of the present electronic model. Finally, with the aim of describing neutron scattering experiments, we present a phenomenological model for collective $S=1$ excitations and their coupling to superflow and density-wave fluctuations.

We study the phases of doped spin S=1/2 quantum antiferromagnets on the square lattice, as they evolve from paramagnetic Mott insulators with valence bond solid (VBS) order at zero doping, to superconductors at moderate doping. The interplay between density wave/VBS order and superconductivity is efficiently described by the quantum dimer model, which acts as an effective theory for the total spin S=0 sector. Fermionic Spinon Theory of Square Lattice Spin Liquids near the Néel State

Alex Thomson, Subir Sachdev A

Quantum fluctuations of the Néel state of the square lattice antiferromagnet are usually described by a CP 1 theory of bosonic spinons coupled to a U(1) gauge field, and with a global SU(2) spin rotation symmetry.Such a theory also has a confining phase with valence bond solid (VBS) order, and upon including spin-singlet charge-2 Higgs fields, deconfined phases with Z 2 topological order possibly intertwined with discrete broken global symmetries. We present dual theories of the same phases starting from a mean-field theory of fermionic spinons moving in π flux in each square lattice plaquette.Fluctuations about this π-flux state are described by (2 þ 1)-dimensional quantum chromodynamics (QCD 3 ) with a SU(2) gauge group and N f ¼ 2 flavors of massless Dirac fermions. It has recently been argued by Wang et al. [Deconfined Quantum Critical Points: Symmetries and Dualities, Phys. Rev. X 7, 031051 (2017).]that this QCD 3 theory describes the Néel-VBS quantum phase transition. We introduce adjoint Higgs fields in QCD 3 and obtain fermionic dual descriptions of the phases with Z 2 topological order obtained earlier using the bosonic CP 1 theory. We also present a fermionic spinon derivation of the monopole Berry phases in the U(1) gauge theory of the VBS state. The global phase diagram of these phases contains multicritical points, and our results imply new boson-fermion dualities between critical gauge theories of these points.

How to control pairing fluctuations: SU(2) slave-rotor gauge theory of the Hubbard model

Ki‐Seok Kim

We study how to incorporate Mott physics in the BCS-type superconductor, motivated by the fact that high ${T}_{c}$ superconductivity results from a Mott insulator via hole doping. The U(1) slave-rotor representation was proposed to take local-density fluctuations into account nonperturbatively, describing the Mott-Hubbard transition at half filling. Since this decomposition cannot control local pairing fluctuations, the U(1) slave-rotor representation does not give a satisfactory treatment for charge fluctuations. Extending the U(1) slave-rotor representation, we introduce an SU(2) slave-rotor representation to allow not only local-density fluctuations but also local pairing excitations. We find an SU(2) slave-rotor gauge theory of the Hubbard model in terms of two kinds of collective boson excitations associated with density and pairing fluctuations that interact with gapless fermion excitations via SU(2) gauge fluctuations. An interesting observation in this effective description is that phase fluctuations of fermion pairs arise as SU(2) gauge fluctuations. Thus, fermion-pairing excitations can be controlled by the dynamics of collective bosons in the SU(2) slave-rotor gauge theory. Performing the standard saddle-point analysis based on the SU(2) slave-rotor action, we find an interesting phase described by partial freezing of charge fluctuations near the Mott-Hubbard critical point, where local-density-fluctuation modes are condensed but local pair-excitation modes are gapped. Partial freezing of charge fluctuations causes fermion pairing to be incoherent as a result of reconciliation of superconductivity and Mott physics. The nature of this nonsuperconducting phase is identified with an anomalous metal due to the presence of incoherent pairing.
