Exactly Solvable Model of Quantum Spin Interacting with Spin Environment

Abstract

An exactly solvable model of a quantum spin interacting with a spin environment is considered. The interaction is chosen to be such that the state of the environment is conserved. The reduced density matrix of the spin is calculated for arbitrary coupling strength and arbitrary time. The stationary state of the spin is obtained explicitely in the $t \to \infty$ limit.

The role of initial system–environment correlations with a spin environment

Ali Raza Mirza, Mah Noor Jamil, Adam Zaman Chaudhry

Open quantum systems are a subject of immense interest as their understanding is crucial in the implementation of modern quantum technologies. In the study of their dynamics, the role of the initial system–environment correlations is commonly ignored. In this work, to gain insights into the role of these correlations, we solve an exactly solvable model of a single two-level system interacting with a spin environment, with the initial system state prepared by a suitable unitary operation. By solving the dynamics exactly for arbitrary system–environment coupling strength while taking into account the initial system–environment correlations, we show that the effect of the initial correlations is, in general, very significant and nontrivial. To further highlight the importance of the initial system–environment correlations, we also extend our study to investigate the dynamics of the entanglement between two two-level systems interacting with a common spin environment.

Dynamical Processes in Exactly Solvable Quantum Mechanical Systems I.

Sachiko Kitajima, Fumiaki Shibata

Decoherence and relaxation processes in quantum systems are studied on the basis of an exactly solvable model. That is, a generalized Coleman-Hepp model is analyzed in a framework of a spin coherent state representation which enables us to determine time evolution of the whole system as successive applications of rotation operators. A density matrix of the whole system and reduced density matrices of constituent subsystems are obtained to yield quasi-probability densities and averages of observables of an incident particle and a detector (reservoir) system. Numerical evaluation of these quantities is performed to find decoherence like phenomena for larger values of N (a number of detector spins) and S l (magnitude of a detector spin). An appearance of a mixed state (i.e., vanishing of off-diagonal elements of a reduced matrix) is explicitly shown when N and/or S l become infinity. Namely, this occurs in the thermodynamic limit ( N →∞) and/or in the classical apparatus limit ( S l →∞).

Quantum dynamics of two-spin-qubit systems

Văn Hiếu Nguyễn

The aim of this topical review is a systematic and concise presentation of the results of a series of theoretical works on the quantum dynamics of two-spin-qubit systems towards the elaboration of a physical mechanism of the quantum information transfer between two spin-qubits. For this purpose the main attention is paid to exactly solvable models of two-spin-qubit systems, since the analytical expressions of the elements of their reduced density matrices explicitly exhibit the mutual dependence of the quantum information encoded into the spin-qubits. The treatment of their decoherence due to the interaction with the environment is performed in the Markovian approximation. Rate equations for axially symmetric systems of two coupled spin-qubits non-interacting, as well as interacting, with the environment are exactly solved. It is shown how the solutions of rate equations demonstrate the physical mechanism of the quantum information exchange between the spin-qubits. This mechanism holds also in all two-spin-qubit systems whose rate equations can be solved only by means of numerical calculations. Exact solutions of rate equations for two uncoupled spin-qubits interacting with two separate environments reveal an interesting physical phenomenon in the time evolution of the qubit-qubit entanglement generated by their interaction with the environments: the entanglement sudden death and revival. A two-spin-qubit system with an asymptotically decoherence free subspace was also explicitly constructed. The presented calculations and reasonings can be extended for application to the study of spin-qubit chains or networks.

Exactly solvable quantum spin model with alternating and multiple spin exchange interactions

Andrei A. Zvyagin, Gleb A. Skorobagatko

We propose an exactly solvable quantum spin model, in which the alternation of the exchange interactions between neighboring spins is accompanied by the multiple spin exchange. The model permits us to obtain exactly thermodynamic characteristics of the considered quantum spin chain. In the ground state, depending on the strength of the three-spin coupling, the model manifests either the spin-gapped behavior of low-lying excitations at low magnetic fields, or the ferrimagnetic ordering with the spontaneous magnetization and with gapless low-lying excitations. The system undergoes second order or first order quantum phase transitions, governed by an external magnetic field and the multiple spin exchange coupling strength. Our exactly solvable quantum spin model demonstrates that multispin interactions in a dimerized quantum spin chain can produce a spontaneous magnetization. On the other hand, for quantum spin chains with a spontaneous magnetization, caused by multispin couplings, the alternation of nearest neighbor exchange interactions can be the reason for destroying of that magnetization and the onset of a spin gap for low-lying excitations.

Non-Markovian reduced dynamics and entanglement evolution of two coupled spins in a quantum spin environment

Xiao-Zhong Yuan, Hsi‐Sheng Goan, Ka-Di Zhu

The exact quantum dynamics of the reduced density matrix of two coupled spin qubits in a quantum Heisenberg $XY$ spin star environment in the thermodynamic limit at arbitrarily finite temperatures is obtained using an operator technique. In this approach, the transformed Hamiltonian becomes effectively Jaynes-Cumming-like and thus the analysis is also relevant to cavity quantum electrodynamics. This special operator technique is mathematically simple and physically clear, and allows us to treat systems and environments that could all be strongly coupled mutually and internally. To study their entanglement evolution, the concurrence of the reduced density matrix of the two coupled central spins is also obtained exactly. It is shown that the dynamics of the entanglement depends on the initial state of the system and the coupling strength between the two coupled central spins, the thermal temperature of the spin environment, and the interaction between the constituents of the spin environment. We also investigate the effect of detuning, which in our model can be controlled by the strength of a locally applied external magnetic field. It is found that the detuning has a significant effect on the entanglement generation between the two-spin qubits.

Decoherence and Thermalization of Quantum Spin Systems

Shengjun Yuan

In this review, we discuss the decoherence and thermalization of a quantum spin system interacting with a spin bath environment, by numerically solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation of the whole system. The effects of the topologic structure and the initial state of the environment on the decoherence of the two-spin and many-spin system are discussed. The role of different spin-spin coupling is considered. We show under which conditions the environment drives the reduced density matrix of the system to a fully decoherent state, and how the diagonal elements of the reduced density matrix approach those expected for the system in the microcanonical or canonical ensemble, depending on the character of the additional integrals of motion. Our demonstration does not rely on time-averaging of observables nor does it assume that the coupling between system and bath is weak. Our findings show that the microcanonical distribution (in each eigenenergy subspace) and canonical ensemble are states that may result from pure quantum dynamics, suggesting that quantum mechanics may be regarded as the foundation of quantum statistical mechanics. Furthermore, our numerical results show that a fully decoherent quantum system prefers to stay in an equilibrium state with a maximum entropy, indicating the validity of the second law of thermodynamics in the decoherence process.
