Abstract

An inseparability criterion based on the total variance of a pair of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen type operators is proposed for continuous variable systems. The criterion provides a sufficient condition for entanglement of any two-party continuous variable states. Furthermore, for all Gaussian states, this criterion turns out to be a necessary and sufficient condition for inseparability.

Squeezing and Entanglement in Continuous Variable Systems

Yun‐Jie Xia, Guo Guang-Can

Based on total variance of a pair of Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen (EPR) type operators, the generalized EPR entangled states in continuous variable systems are defined. We show that such entangled states must correspond to two-mode squeezing states whether these states are Gaussian or not and whether they are pure or not. With help of the relation between the total variance and the entanglement, the degree of such entanglement is also defined. Through analysing some specific cases, we see that this method is very convenient and easy in practical applications. In addition, an entangled state with no squeezing is studied, which reveals that there certainly exists something unknown about entanglement in continuous variable systems.

Higher-order Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations and inseparability conditions for continuous variables

Evgeny V Shchukin, Peter van Loock

We derive two types of sets of higher-order conditions for bipartite entanglement in terms of continuous variables. One corresponds to an extension of the well-known Duan inequalities from second to higher moments describing a kind of higher-order Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlations. Only the second type, however, expressed by powers of the mode operators leads to tight conditions with a hierarchical structure. We start with a minimization problem for the single-partite case and, using the results obtained, establish relevant inequalities for higher-order moments satisfied by all bipartite separable states. We give an explicit example of a non-Gaussian state that exhibits fourth-order but no second-order EPR correlations. Similarly, a certain fourth-order condition cannot be violated by any Gaussian state and we present non-Gaussian states whose entanglement is detected by that condition. Violations of all our conditions are provided, so they can all be used as entanglement tests.

A general inseparability criterion for non-Gaussian states

Prasoon Kumar Shandilya, Prasanta Kumar Panigrahi

We have derived a general separability criterion for a class of two mode non-Gaussian continuous variable systems, obtained earlier using PPT, violation of which provides sufficient condition for entanglement. It has been obtained by utilizing the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality and from the basic definition of separable states. This criterion coincides with the work of Agarwal and Biswas [4] which involved inequality involving higher order correlation, for testing entanglement in non-Gaussian states.

Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen-Like Correlation on a Coherent-State Basis and Inseparability of Two-Mode Gaussian States

Ryo Namiki

The strange property of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlation between two remote physical systems is a primitive object on the study of quantum entanglement. In order to understand the entanglement in canonical continuous-variable systems, a pair of the EPR-like uncertainties is an essential tool. Here, we consider a normalized pair of the EPR-like uncertainties and introduce a state-overlap to a classically correlated mixture of coherent states. The separable condition associated with this state-overlap determines the strength of the EPR-like correlation on a coherent-state basis in order that the state is entangled. We show that the coherent-state-based condition is capable of detecting the class of two-mode Gaussian entangled states. We also present an experimental measurement scheme for estimation of the state-overlap by a heterodyne measurement and a photon detection with a feedforward operation.

Separability criteria for continuous-variable systems

Kazuo Fujikawa

A general separability condition on the second moment (covariance matrix) for continuous-variable two-party systems is derived by an analysis analogous to the derivation of Kennard's uncertainty relation without referring to the non-negativity of the partially transposed density matrix. This separability criterion is generally more stringent than that used by Simon which is based on the non-negativity of partially transposed density matrix, and thus this criterion may be useful in the analysis of general continuous two-party systems. Another separability criterion used by Duan et al. is shown to be generally weaker than that of Simon. We thus have a hierarchy of separability criterions, but all these criterions when combined with suitable squeezing become equivalent at the boundary of the $P$-representation condition and thus turned out to be sufficient to analyze the separability of two-party Gaussian systems.
