State Preparation by Photon Filtering

Abstract

We propose a setup capable of generating Fock states of a single mode radiation field. The scheme is based on coupling the signal field to a ring cavity through cross-Kerr phase modulation, and on conditional ON-OFF photodetection at the output cavity mode. The same setup allows to prepare selected superpositions of Fock states and entangled two-mode states. Remarkably, the detector's quantum efficiency does not affect the reliability of the state synthesis.

STATE MEASUREMENT BY PHOTON FILTERING IN A RING CAVITY

Giacomo Mauro D’Ariano, Lorenzo Maccone, Matteo G. A. Paris +1 more

We suggest a method for measuring the photon number distribution and the density matrix of a single-mode radiation field. The setup consists of a chain of active ring cavities, each fed by a strong coherent probe and coupled to the signal through cross-Kerr phase modulation. Each cavity is set at resonance by a different Fock component of the signal, so that the detection probability at the cavities output is proportional to the signal photon statistics. The off-diagonal elements of the density matrix can be evaluated by measuring the photon statistics of a set of displaced signal states. The suggested setup allows a reliable state measurement even with low quantum efficiency at detectors.

THE PREPARATION OF FOCK STATES BY QUANTUM MEASUREMENTS IN A KERR MEDIA AND THE INFLUENCE OF SELF-PHASE MODULATION

ZHOU WEI, Xue Qiu-Han, Guo Guang-Can +1 more

A scheme for the preparation of a Fock state is proposed. We study two lights interacting in a Kerr media with self-phase modulation. The signal light and the probe light whose initial states are both coherent states will be entangled via interaction, then when a quadrature component of the probe light is measured, the photon number distribution of the signal light is modulated. Repeating the process, we find the signal will collapse into a Fock state finally, and the physical principle of this evolution is based on the cross-phase modulation, the self-phase modulation may hinder the preparation of a Fock state.

Optical Fock-state synthesizer

Giacomo Mauro D’Ariano, Lorenzo Maccone, Matteo G. A. Paris +1 more

We suggest a tunable optical device to synthesize Fock states and their superpositions starting from a coherent source. The scheme involves an avalanche-triggering photodetector and a ring cavity coupled to a traveling wave through a cross-Kerr medium. Low quantum efficiency at the photodetector improves the synthesizing quality at the expense of reducing the synthesizing rate.

Conditional generation of arbitrary single-mode quantum states of light by repeated photon subtractions

Jaromı́r Fiurášek, Raúl García−Patrón, Nicolas J. Cerf

We propose a scheme for the conditional generation of arbitrary finite superpositions of Fock states in a single mode of a traveling optical field. The setup requires a source of squeezed vacuum states, beam splitters, strong coherent beams, photodetectors with single-photon sensitivity, and a final squeezer. If we want to generate a squeezed superposition of Fock states, which is sufficient in several applications, then the last squeezer is not even needed. The thrust of this method is that it achieves a high fidelity without requiring photodetectors with a high efficiency or a single-photon resolution. The possibility to improve its scaling by using a quantum memory is also discussed.
