Quantization via Classical Orbits

Abstract

A systematic method for calculating higher-order corrections of the relativistic semiclassical fixed-energy amplitude is given. The central scheme in computing corrections of all orders is related to a time ordering operation of an operator involving the Van Vleck determinant. This study provides us a new viewpoint for quantization.

Transition Amplitude within the Stochastic Quantization Scheme -- Perturbative Treatment

Kazuya Yuasa, Hiromichi Nakazato

The quantum mechanical transition amplitudes are calculated perturbatively on the basis of the stochastic quantization method of Parisi and Wu. It is shown that the stochastic scheme reproduces the ordinary result for the amplitude and systematically incorporates higher-order effects, even at the lowest order.

Semiclassical energy quantization of anharmonic potential motion-complex trajectory contributions versus higher-order corrections

Karl-Erik Thylwe, Örjan Dammert

In the present investigation we assess the relevance of both classically forbidden phenomena and higher-order asymptotic contributions for the semiclassical energy quantization of a particle in the anharmonic oscillator potential V(x)=x 2 /2+ lambda x 4 . We propose an iterative method (Iq) for obtaining higher-order semiclassical corrections, which is similar to the WKB and phase-integral methods in the lowest order, but in higher orders the approximation differs significantly. A 'primitive' Bohr-Sommerfeld energy quantization is compared with a more complete semiclassical quantization, taking into account both complex trajectory contributions and higher-order (quantal) corrections.

Periodic Orbit Quantization beyond the Semiclassical Theory

Gábor Vattay, Per E. Rosenqvist

A quantum generalization of the semiclassical theory of Gutzwiller is given. The new formulation leads to systematic orbit-by-orbit inclusion of higher $\ensuremath{\Elzxh}$ contributions to the spectral determinant. We apply the theory to billiard systems, and compare the periodic orbit quantization including the first $\ensuremath{\Elzxh}$ contribution to the exact quantum mechanical results.

Semiclassical amplitudes: Supercaustics and the whisker map

Neepa T. Maitra, Eric J. Heller

The semiclassical approximation for a quantum amplitude is given by the sum of contributions from intersections of the appropriate manifolds in classical phase space. The intersection overlaps are just the Van Vleck determinants multiplied by a phase given by a classical action. Here we consider two nonstandard instances of this semiclassical prescription which would appear to be on shaky ground, yet the corresponding physical situations are not unusual. The first case involves momentum-space WKB theory for scattering potentials; the second is a propagator for the whisker map that arises in generic two-dimensional systems. In the former case two manifolds become asymptotically tangent, and the semiclassical formula needs to be uniformized in order to give a meaningful wave function. We give a uniformization procedure. In the latter case, there are an infinite number of intersections in phase space within a zone with the area of Planck's constant (the limit of resolution for quantum mechanics), yet the semiclassical sum over all contributions is shown to be correct.

Quantum decay of an open chaotic system: A semiclassical approach

Mathias Puhlmann, Holger Schanz, Tsampikos Kottos +1 more

We study the quantum probability to survive in an open chaotic system in the framework of the van Vleck-Gutzwiller propagator and present the first such calculation that accounts for quantum interference effects. Specifically we calculate quantum deviations from the classical decay after the break time for both broken and preserved time-reversal symmetry. The source of these corrections is identified in interfering pairs of correlated classical trajectories. In our approach the quantized chaotic system is modelled by a quatum graph.
