Control of dynamical localization by an additional quantum degree of freedom

Abstract

We identify a parameter that controls the localization length in a driven quantum system. This parameter results from an additional quantum degree of freedom. The center-of-mass motion of a two-level ion stored in a Paul trap and interacting with a standing-wave laser field exhibits this phenomenon. We also discuss the influence of spontaneous emission.

Control of Dynamical Localization by Additional Quantum Degrees

K. Riedel, Päivi Törmä, В. И. Савичев +1 more

The phenomenon of localization manifests itself in many quantum mechanical systems ranging from the localization of light in a random medium via Anderson localization of an electronic wave to the motion of atoms in time-dependent laser fields. In all these cases the underlying classical system is chaotic and shows diffusion as a function of time. In contrast, the quantum mechanical counterpart has a localized wave function whose width is governed by the classical diffusion and Planck’s constant. In this paper we show that there exists an additional quantum parameter that controls the localization length. In the system of a two-level ion stored in a Paul trap and interacting with a standing wave it is the detuning between the transition frequency and the laser field. We also discuss the effect of decoherence in form of spontaneous emission. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

Dynamical Localization in the Paul Trap

M. El Ghafar, Päivi Törmä, В. И. Савичев +3 more

We show that quantum localization occurs in the center-of-mass motion of an ion stored in a Paul trap and interacting with a standing laser field. The present state-of-the-art ion trap systems makes the experimental observation of this phenomenon feasible.

Quantum-mechanical localization of an ion in a Paul trap

M. El Ghafar, E. Mayr, В. И. Савичев +3 more

We show that dynamical localization of vibrational states occurs for an ion stored in a Paul trap and interacting with a standing laser field [1A]. The relation between the classical diffusion and the localization length is found to be of the same form as for the paradigm of dynamical localization, the kicked rotator.

Dynamical localization of atomic de Broglie waves: The influence of spontaneous emission

R. Graham, Syuji Miyazaki

The quantized center-of-mass dynamics of two-level atoms in a periodically modulated standing-wave laser field is analyzed, including the decohering effect of spontaneous emission. Under conditions appropriate for the occurrence of dynamical localization as determined in previous work, we predict a random diffusive motion of dynamically localized de Broglie waves due to spontaneous emission and calculate the diffusion constant and the diffusing distribution of wave packets. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Laser controlled quantum motion of two Paul trapped ions

Cai Li-Hua, Hai Wen-Hua, Gengbiao Lu

We investigate the quantum motion of two ions stored in a Paul trap and interacting with a time-periodic laser field. In the pseudopotential approximation and large detuning condition, we find that the relative motion is independent of the laser field, but the exact centre-of-mass motion is closely related to the laser field. By adjusting the laser intensity and frequency, we can well control the quantum motion of the centre-of-mass. We illustrate some physical properties described by the centre-of-mass states, such as the squeezed coherent property, the widths and heights of the wavepackets of probability density, the classical-quantum correspondence, the resonance ladders of expectation energy and the transition probabilities between time-dependent quantum levels.

Two-dimensional atom localization via spontaneous emission in a coherently driven five-level M-type atomic system

Chunling Ding, Jiahua Li, Zhiming Zhan +1 more

A scheme is proposed for two-dimensional atom localization in the subwavelength domain via controlled spontaneous emission. We consider a five-level M-type atomic system interacting with two orthogonal standing-wave laser fields and the vacuum of the radiation field. The interaction of the atom with space-dependent standing-wave fields can provide information about the position of the atom passing through, thus leading to atom localization. It is found that the localization is significantly improved due to the interference effect between the spontaneous decay channels and the dynamically induced quantum interference generated by the two standing-wave fields. By properly varying the system parameters, we can achieve high-precision and high-resolution atom localization.
