Abstract

We investigate the quantum motion of two ions stored in a Paul trap and interacting with a time-periodic laser field. In the pseudopotential approximation and large detuning condition, we find that the relative motion is independent of the laser field, but the exact centre-of-mass motion is closely related to the laser field. By adjusting the laser intensity and frequency, we can well control the quantum motion of the centre-of-mass. We illustrate some physical properties described by the centre-of-mass states, such as the squeezed coherent property, the widths and heights of the wavepackets of probability density, the classical-quantum correspondence, the resonance ladders of expectation energy and the transition probabilities between time-dependent quantum levels.

Laser Controlling Wavepacket Trains of a Paul Trapped Ion

Cai Li-Hua, Hai Wen-Hua, Wu Yun-Wen

We have studied the quantum and classical motions of a single Paul trapped ion interacting with a time-periodic laser field. By using the test-function method, we construct n exact solutions of quantum dynamics that describe the generalized squeezed coherent states with the expectation orbits being the corresponding classical ones. The space-time evolutions of the exact probability densities show some wavepacket trains. It is demonstrated analytically that by adjusting the laser intensity and frequency, we can control the center motions of the wavepacket trains. We also discuss the other physical properties such as the expectation value of energy, the widths and heights of the wavepackets, and the resonance loss of stability.

Quantum Dynamics of a Single Trapped Ion Interacting with Standing Laser Pulses

Li Fei, Hai Wen-Hua, Chong Gui-Shu +1 more

A classically chaotic system consisting of a Paul trapped ion and a sequences of standing laser pulses is treated quantum-mechanically. Under the circumstance of time-dependence, we derive the transition probability from the ion's motional state to ', and find, in the first-order approximation, the classically chaotic character disappears. Theoretical analysis and numerical calculations show that by regulating the phase parameter we can control the transition probability. When reaches some specific values, the transition from the state to ' is forbidden and, for some laser periods, resonance occurs, which leads to the corresponding transitions between different motional states. The time-evolution of an initial motional state just over one period is also studied in detail.

Coherence-Like States of Two Coulomb-Correlated Ions Confined in a Paul Trap

Hui Li, Hai Wen-Hua, Chen Wen-Qin +1 more

We report the n × n ' coherence-like state solutions in the cases of n , n ' = 1,2,... for the system including two Coulomb-correlated ions confined in a one-dimensional Paul trap with a time-dependent harmonic potential. One of the n ' exact solutions of the centre-of-mass motion describes a generalized coherent state. For a small driving strength the n approximate solutions of relative motion are constructed, which describe the coherent oscillations of the two ions around the classical equilibrium position.

Wave packet dynamics of an atomic ion in a Paul trap

A. Hashemloo, Claude M. Dion, G. Rahali

Using numerical simulations of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we study the full quantum dynamics of the motion of an atomic ion in a linear Paul trap. Such a trap is based on a time-varying, periodic electric field and hence corresponds to a time-dependent potential for the ion, which we model exactly. We compare the center-of-mass motion with that obtained from classical equations of motion, as well as to results based on a time-independent effective potential. We also study the oscillations of the width of the ion’s wave packet, including close to the border between stable (bounded) and unstable (unbounded) trajectories. Our results confirm that the center-of-mass motion always follows the classical trajectory, that the width of the wave packet is bounded for trapping within the stability region, and therefore that the classical trapping criterion is fully applicable to quantum motion.

Exact quantum motion of a single trapped ion interacting with standing laser pulses in Lamb-Dicke regime

Yang Mei-Rong, Hai Wen-Hua, Gengbiao Lu +2 more

We investigate the secular motion of a single Paul-trapped ion in the Lamb-Dicke regime, which interacts with a sequence of standing laser pulses. By using the ansatz method, we get an exact quantum solution of the system. Based on the wave-packet trains described by the exact solution, we find that: i) The center, height and width of the wave-packet trains depend on the strength of laser pulses, the deformation and spread of the wave-packet trains can be controlled by adjusting the strength of laser. ii) Energy expectation values of the ion show jumps at the instantaneous switching on of the laser pulses. In the time intervals when the laser pulses are switched off some narrow energy bands are generated. iii) When the strength of laser pulses reaches a critical value, the system changes its stability.

On decoherence and nonlinear effects in the generation of quantum states of motion in Paul traps

Rocío Jáuregui, J. Récamier, Pedro Antonio Quinto-Su

We study some possible sources of decoherence in the generation of nonclassical states of motion of ions in Paul traps by means of numerical simulations based on reported experiments. In particular we study the consequences of the spontaneous decay of the internal energy state |0⟩ i which couples the two hyperfine internal states |1⟩ i and |2⟩ i in the two-photon Raman transitions used to manipulate the ion motional state. We also consider some possible experimental limitations to generate coherent states due to nonlinear effects in the coupling of the centre-of-mass coordinates with the laser field. A similar analysis is performed for carrier pulses taking into account nonlinearities and micromotion. The quantum evolution of the ion internal and centre-of-mass degrees of freedom are studied using amplitude equations derived from Schrödinger's equation. The limitations of such an approach are also discussed.
