Photon counting, quantum phase, and phase-space distributions

Matthias Freyberger, Wolfgang P. Schleich

We analyze a recent proposal for a new phase operator along with the experiment [J. W. Noh, A. Foug\`eres, and L. Mandel, Phys. Rev. Lett. 67, 1426 (1991)] using phase-space functions. We show that the measured dispersion in phase results from a phase distribution given by the appropriate Wigner function integrated over radius. We relate this experiment to a different phase operator [H. Paul, Fortschr. Phys. 22, 657 (1974)] and the integrated Q function.

We extended the seminal experiment of Banaszek et al. of quantum tomography by photon counting without Radon transform postprocessing to the more general case of photon fluxes with more than one photon per detection time.

Local sampling of the SU(1,1) Wigner function

Nicolas Fabre, A. B. Klimov, Gerd Leuchs +1 more

The Wigner phase-space formulation for systems possessing SU(1,1) symmetry has been defined by Seyfarth et al. [Quantum 4, 317 (2020)] tackling the difficulty in defining a suitable operational definition of the Wigner function. To further investigate this formulation, we propose a non-linear optical setup that incorporates photon-number-resolving detectors, which would enable a direct and comprehensive point-by-point sampling of the SU(1,1) Wigner function. We discuss the visualization of various two-mode quantum states and the effect of the losses in such a detection scheme.

Direct Probing of Quantum Phase Space by Photon Counting

Konrad Banaszek, K. Wódkiewicz

We propose a very simple experimental setup to measure, via photon counting, the overlap of the Wigner functions characterizing two single mode light beams. We show that this scheme can be applied to determine directly the phase space quasiprobability distribution of the single mode field and in a certain limit the Wigner function can be measured without use of tomographic reconstruction algorithms. The deleterious effects of nonunit photodetector efficiency are analyzed.
