Area of overlap and interference in phase space versus Wigner pseudoprobabilities

Wolfgang P. Schleich, Daniel F. Walls, JOHN ARCHIBALD WHEELER

In the semiclassical approximation, the quantum-mechanical scalar product between two quantum states is governed by (1) the areas of overlap in phase space of these states and (2) interference between the probability amplitudes contributed by these areas. We compare and contrast this principle with Wigner's concept of pseudoprobabilities in phase space and illustrate the essential points of both treatments by the oscillations in the photon distribution of a highly squeezed state.

Dimension of quantum phase space measured by photon correlations

Gerd Leuchs, Roy J. Glauber, Wolfgang P. Schleich

We show that the different values 1, 2 and 3 of the normalized second-order correlation function corresponding to a coherent state, a thermal state and a highly squeezed vacuum originate from the different dimensionality of these states in phase space. In particular, we derive an exact expression for in terms of the ratio of the moments of the classical energy evaluated with the Wigner function of the quantum state of interest and corrections proportional to the reciprocal of powers of the average number of photons. In this way we establish a direct link between and the shape of the state in phase space. Moreover, we illuminate this connection by demonstrating that in the semi-classical limit the familiar photon statistics of a thermal state arise from an area in phase space weighted by a two-dimensional Gaussian, whereas those of a highly squeezed state are governed by a line-integral of a one-dimensional Gaussian.

Sampling quantum phase space with squeezed states

Konrad Banaszek, Krzysztof Wódkiewicz

We study the application of squeezed states in a quantum optical scheme for direct sampling of the phase space by photon counting. We prove that the detection setup with a squeezed coherent probe field is equivalent to the probing of the squeezed signal field with a coherent state. An example of the Schr odinger cat state measurement shows that the use of squeezed states allows one to detect clearly the interference between distinct phase space components despite losses through the unused output port of the setup.
