Dimension of quantum phase space measured by photon correlations

Abstract

We show that the different values 1, 2 and 3 of the normalized second-order correlation function corresponding to a coherent state, a thermal state and a highly squeezed vacuum originate from the different dimensionality of these states in phase space. In particular, we derive an exact expression for in terms of the ratio of the moments of the classical energy evaluated with the Wigner function of the quantum state of interest and corrections proportional to the reciprocal of powers of the average number of photons. In this way we establish a direct link between and the shape of the state in phase space. Moreover, we illuminate this connection by demonstrating that in the semi-classical limit the familiar photon statistics of a thermal state arise from an area in phase space weighted by a two-dimensional Gaussian, whereas those of a highly squeezed state are governed by a line-integral of a one-dimensional Gaussian.

Intensity–intensity correlations determined by dimension of quantum state in phase space:P-distribution

Gerd Leuchs, Roy J. Glauber, Wolfgang P. Schleich

We use the P -distribution to show that the familiar values 1, 2 and 3 of the normalized second order correlation function at equal times corresponding to a coherent state, a thermal state and a highly squeezed vacuum are a consequence of the number of dimensions these states take up in quantum phase space. Whereas the thermal state exhibits rotational symmetry and thus extends over two dimensions, the squeezed vacuum factorizes into two independent one-dimensional phase space variables, and in the limit of large squeezing is therefore a one-dimensional object. The coherent state is a point in the phase space of the P -distribution and thus has zero dimensions. The fact that for photon number states the P -distribution is even narrower than that of the zero-dimensional coherent state suggests the notion of 'negative' dimensions.

Properties of squeezed number states and squeezed thermal states

M. S. Kim, F. A. M. de Oliveira, P. L. Knight

Much attention has been given in the past to two classes of squeezed states: the squeezed vacuum and coherent states. Here we study the effects of squeezing on number states and on thermal field states. The statistical properties of these various squeezed states are discussed using the second-order correlation functions. The quasiprobabilities of the Wigner, Q, and positive P representations are calculated and compared for the squeezed states. The Glauber P representation for the squeezed thermal state explicitly shows the limit of its applicability. The photon number distributions of the squeezed number and squeezed thermal states are extensively discussed and new interference effects in phase space are shown to lead to highly structured number distributions.

Nonclassical properties of photon-added two-mode squeezed thermal states and their decoherence in the thermal channel

Xiang‐Guo Meng, Zhen Wang, Hong-Yi Fan +2 more

We investigate nonclassicality and decoherence of field states generated with the non-Gaussian operation of photon addition to a two-mode squeezed thermal state (TSTS) using the normally ordered density operator of the photon-added TSTS (PTSTS). The normalization factor of the PTSTS is just a Jacobi polynomial of the squeezing parameter γ and the average photon number n¯ of the thermal field. We show that the fields in such states exhibit remarkable quantum features, such as sub-Poissonian photon statistics, the anti-bunching effect, and photon-number distribution. The nonclassicality is discussed in phase space based on the partial negativity of the Wigner function (WF) with two-variable Hermite polynomials. The results show that the non-Gaussian WF always exhibits the quantum interference structure caused by the two-mode squeezing operation and has some negative regions for any value of n¯, γ, and the photon-addition numbers m, n. In addition, the effect of decoherence on the PTSTS in the thermal channel is studied by analytically deriving the time-evolution WF. We find that the WF becomes Gaussian (corresponding to a classical thermal state) at long times, losing its nonclassicality as a result of decoherence, and a larger m (or n) leads to a longer decoherence time κt.

Higher-order squeezing properties of two-mode squeezed states

Jiaxin Gong, P. K. Aravind

We have investigated the properties of two-mode squeezed states of various kinds: squeezed coherent states, squeezed number states, squeezed thermal states, and squeezed number-thermal states. The properties studied include characteristic functions, photon number distributions, and high-order moments. We show that a two-mode squeezed coherent state appears in either of its modes as a Glauber-Lachs superposition of a coherent signal with thermal noise; this generalizes the well-known thermofield result that a two-mode squeezed vacuum state behaves like a pure thermal state in either of its modes. We investigate the higher-order squeezing (in the sense of Hong and Mandel) of squeezed coherent-thermal and squeezed number-thermal states. Although the squeezing is found to increase with order in both cases, there are nevertheless interesting differences that can be traced to the fact that the Wigner function has a Gaussian form for the former but not for the latter.

Statistical properties of photon-subtracted two-mode squeezed vacuum and its decoherence in thermal environment

Liyun Hu, Xue-xiang Xu, Hong-Yi Fan

We investigate the statistical properties of photon subtractions from a two-mode squeezed vacuum state and its decoherence in a thermal environment. It is found that the state can be considered as a squeezed two-variable Hermite polynomial excitation vacuum, and the normalization of this state is the Jacobi polynomial of the squeezing parameter. A compact expression for the Wigner function (WF) is also derived analytically by using the Weyl-ordered operator invariance under similar transformations. Especially, the nonclassicality is discussed in terms of the negativity of the WF. The decoherence effect on this state is then discussed by deriving the time evolution of the WF. It is shown that the WF is always positive for any squeezing parameter and any photon-subtraction number if the decay time exceeds an upper bound (κt>½ ln 2n¯+2/2n¯+1).
