Abstract

We introduce a general formalism to obtain localized quantum wavepackets as dynamically controlled systems, in the framework of Nelson stochastic quantization. We show that in general the control is linear, and it amounts to introducing additional time-dependent terms in the potential. In this way one can construct for general systems either coherent packets following classical motion with constant dispersion, or coherent packets following classical motion whose time-dependent dispersion remains bounded for all times. We show that in the operatorial language our scheme amounts to introducing a suitable generalization to arbitrary potentials of the displacement and scaling operators that generate the coherent and squeezed states of the harmonic oscillator.

THEORY OF CONTROLLED QUANTUM DYNAMICS

Salvatore De Martino, Silvio De Siena, Fabrizio Illuminati

We introduce a general formalism, based on the stochastic formulation of quantum mechanics, to obtain localized quasi-classical wave packets as dynamically controlled systems, for arbitrary anharmonic potentials. The control is in general linear, and it amounts to introduce additional quadratic and linear time-dependent terms to the given potential. In this way one can construct for general systems either coherent packets moving with constant dispersion, or dynamically squeezed packets whose spreading remains bounded for all times. In the standard operatorial framework our scheme corresponds to a suitable generalization of the displacement and scaling operators that generate the coherent and squeezed states of the harmonic oscillator.

Controlled Quantum Packets

Salvatore DeMartino, Silvio DeSiena

We look at time evolution of a physical system from the point of view of dynamical control theory. Normally we solve motion equation with a given external potential and we obtain time evolution. Standard examples are the trajectories in classical mechanics or the wave functions in Quantum Mechanics. In the control theory, we have the configurational variables of a physical system, we choose a velocity field and with a suited strategy we force the physical system to have a well defined evolution. The evolution of the system is the 'premium' that the controller receives if he has adopted the right strategy. The strategy is given by well suited laboratory devices. The control mechanisms are in many cases non linear; it is necessary, namely, a feedback mechanism to retain in time the selected evolution. Our aim is to introduce a scheme to obtain Quantum wave packets by control theory. The program is to choose the characteristics of a packet, that is, the equation of evolution for its centre and a controlled dispersion, and to give a building scheme from some initial state (for example a solution of stationary Schroedinger equation). It seems natural in this view to use stochastic approach to Quantum Mechanics, that is, Stochastic Mechanics [S.M.]. It is a quantization scheme different from ordinary ones only formally. This approach introduces in quantum theory the whole mathematical apparatus of stochastic control theory. Stochastic Mechanics, in our view, is more intuitive when we want to study all the classical-like problems. We apply our scheme to build two classes of quantum packets both derived generalizing some properties of coherent states.

A CLASS OF QUANTUM STATES WITH CLASSICAL-LIKE EVOLUTION

S. De Martino, Silvio De Siena, Fabrizio Illuminati

In the framework of the stochastic formulation of quantum mechanics we derive non-stationary states for a class of time-dependent potentials. The wave packets follow a classical motion with constant dispersion. The new states define a possible extension of the harmonic oscillator coherent states. As an explicit application, we study a sestic oscillator potential.

DYNAMICS OF SQUEEZING FROM GEMERALIZED COHERENT STATES

S. De Martino, Silvio De Siena, Fabrizio Illuminati

We extend the definition of generalized coherent states to include the case of time-dependent dispersion. We introduce a suitable operator providing displacement and dynamical rescaling from an arbitrary ground state. As a consequence, squeezing is naturally embedded in this framework, and its dynamics is ruled by the evolution equation for the dispersion. Our construction provides a displacement-operator method to obtain the squeezed states of arbitrary systems.

Extended Gaussian wavepacket dynamics

B. M. Garraway

We examine an extension to the theory of Gaussian wavepacket dynamics in a one-dimensional potential by means of a sequence of time-dependent displacement and squeezing transformations. Exact expressions for the quantum dynamics are found, and relationships are explored between the squeezed system, Gaussian wavepacket dynamics, the time-dependent harmonic oscillator, and wavepacket dynamics in a Gauss-Hermite basis. Expressions are given for the matrix elements of the potential in some simple cases. Several examples are given, including the propagation of a non-Gaussian initial state in a Morse potential.

DIFFUSION PROCESSES AND COHERENT STATES

S. De Martino, Silvio De Siena, Fabrizio Illuminati

It is shown that uncertainty relations, as well as coherent and squeezed states, are structural properties of stochastic processes with Fokker-Planck dynamics. The quantum mechanical coherent and squeezed states are explicitly constructed via Nelson stochastic quantization. The method is applied to derive new minimum uncertainty states in time-dependent oscillator potentials. 1
