A CLASS OF QUANTUM STATES WITH CLASSICAL-LIKE EVOLUTION

Abstract

In the framework of the stochastic formulation of quantum mechanics we derive non-stationary states for a class of time-dependent potentials. The wave packets follow a classical motion with constant dispersion. The new states define a possible extension of the harmonic oscillator coherent states. As an explicit application, we study a sestic oscillator potential.

New coherent states with applications to time-dependent systems

A. K. Rajagopal, John T. Marshall

A new class of coherent states is defined, having all the properties of the usual coherent states except that the uncertainty product of position and momentum need not be minimum. From the stationary-action principle, the dynamical equations of motion for the expectation values and uncertainties for position and momentum are deduced. For the time-dependent harmonic oscillator, the equation for the uncertainty in the position is found to be the well-known Lewis constraint.

THEORY OF CONTROLLED QUANTUM DYNAMICS

Salvatore De Martino, Silvio De Siena, Fabrizio Illuminati

We introduce a general formalism, based on the stochastic formulation of quantum mechanics, to obtain localized quasi-classical wave packets as dynamically controlled systems, for arbitrary anharmonic potentials. The control is in general linear, and it amounts to introduce additional quadratic and linear time-dependent terms to the given potential. In this way one can construct for general systems either coherent packets moving with constant dispersion, or dynamically squeezed packets whose spreading remains bounded for all times. In the standard operatorial framework our scheme corresponds to a suitable generalization of the displacement and scaling operators that generate the coherent and squeezed states of the harmonic oscillator.

Controlled Quantum Packets

Salvatore DeMartino, Silvio DeSiena

We look at time evolution of a physical system from the point of view of dynamical control theory. Normally we solve motion equation with a given external potential and we obtain time evolution. Standard examples are the trajectories in classical mechanics or the wave functions in Quantum Mechanics. In the control theory, we have the configurational variables of a physical system, we choose a velocity field and with a suited strategy we force the physical system to have a well defined evolution. The evolution of the system is the 'premium' that the controller receives if he has adopted the right strategy. The strategy is given by well suited laboratory devices. The control mechanisms are in many cases non linear; it is necessary, namely, a feedback mechanism to retain in time the selected evolution. Our aim is to introduce a scheme to obtain Quantum wave packets by control theory. The program is to choose the characteristics of a packet, that is, the equation of evolution for its centre and a controlled dispersion, and to give a building scheme from some initial state (for example a solution of stationary Schroedinger equation). It seems natural in this view to use stochastic approach to Quantum Mechanics, that is, Stochastic Mechanics [S.M.]. It is a quantization scheme different from ordinary ones only formally. This approach introduces in quantum theory the whole mathematical apparatus of stochastic control theory. Stochastic Mechanics, in our view, is more intuitive when we want to study all the classical-like problems. We apply our scheme to build two classes of quantum packets both derived generalizing some properties of coherent states.

DYNAMICS OF GENERALIZED COHERENT STATES

S. De Martino, Silvio De Siena, Fabrizio Illuminati

We show that generalized coherent states follow Schrödinger dynamics in time-dependent potentials. The normalized wave-packets follow a classical evolution without spreading; in turn, the Schrödinger potential depends on the state through the classical trajectory. This feedback mechanism with continuous dynamical re-adjustment allows the packets to remain coherent indefinitely.

Theory of controlled quantum dynamics

We introduce a general formalism to obtain localized quantum wavepackets as dynamically controlled systems, in the framework of Nelson stochastic quantization. We show that in general the control is linear, and it amounts to introducing additional time-dependent terms in the potential. In this way one can construct for general systems either coherent packets following classical motion with constant dispersion, or coherent packets following classical motion whose time-dependent dispersion remains bounded for all times. On the quantum mechanical treatment of dissipative systems

Rainer W. Hasse

Two types of Hamiltonians are investigated which describe quantum mechanically a particle moving subject to a linear viscous force under the influence of a conservative force: the conventional explicitly time-dependent one and an alternative class of nonlinear Hamiltonians. In the latter group we propose a new form. By Ehrenfest’s theorem the expectation values of the operators of physical observables correspond to the classical quantities. For all Schrödinger equations we derive and discuss wavepacket, wave, stationary, and pseudostationary solutions of force free motion, free fall, and harmonic oscillator.
