Nonmonotonicity in the Quantum-Classical Transition: Chaos Induced by Quantum Effects

Abstract

The classical-quantum transition for chaotic systems is understood to be accompanied by the suppression of chaotic effects as the relative variant Planck's over 2pi is increased. We show evidence to the contrary in the behavior of the quantum trajectory dynamics of a dissipative quantum chaotic system, the double-well Duffing oscillator. The classical limit in the case considered has regular behavior, but as the effective variant Planck's over 2pi is increased we see chaotic behavior. This chaos then disappears deeper into the quantum regime, which means that the quantum-classical transition in this case is nonmonotonic in variant Planck's over 2pi.

Crossover from classical to quantum behavior of the Duffing oscillator through a pseudo-Lyapunov-exponent

Yukihiro Ota, Ichiro Ohba

We discuss the quantum-classical correspondence (QCC) in a specific dissipative chaotic system, the Duffing oscillator. The quantum version of the Duffing oscillator is treated as an open quantum system and analyzed numerically by the use of quantum state diffusion (QSD). We consider a pseudo-Lyapunov exponent and investigate it in detail, varying the Planck constant effectively. We show that there exists a critical stage in which the crossover from classical to quantum behavior occurs. Furthermore, we find that a dissipation effect suppresses the occurrence of chaos in the quantum region, while it, combined with the periodic external force, plays a crucial role in the chaotic behavior of the classical system.

Crossover from Classical to Quantum Behavior in Duffing Oscillator through “Pseudo-Lyapunov Exponent”

Yukihiro Ota, Ichiro Ohba

We discuss the quantum–classical correspondence in a specific dissipative chaotic system, Duffing oscillator. We quantize it on the basis of quantum state diffusion (QSD) that is a certain formulation for quantum open systems and a useful tool for analyzing nonlinear problems and their classical limit. We define a “pseudo-Lyapunov exponent” and investigate the behavior of this quantity varying Planck constant effectively. We show that in a dissipative system there exists some critical stage in which the crossover from classical to quantum behavior occurs. Furthermore, we show that the role of dissipation changes for quantized Duffing oscillator since the effect of dissipation is important for the occurrence of chaos in classical mechanics but suppresses it in quantum region.

Dynamical complexity in the quantum to classical transition

Bibek Pokharel, Peter Duggins, Moses Misplon +5 more

We study the dynamical complexity of an open quantum driven double-well oscillator, mapping its dependence on effective Planck's constant $\hbar_{eff}\equivβ$ and coupling to the environment, $Γ$. We study this using stochastic Schrodinger equations, semiclassical equations, and the classical limit equation. We show that (i) the dynamical complexity initially increases with effective Hilbert space size (as $β$ decreases) such that the most quantum systems are the least dynamically complex. (ii) If the classical limit is chaotic, that is the most dynamically complex (iii) if the classical limit is regular, there is always a quantum system more dynamically complex than the classical system. There are several parameter regimes where the quantum system is chaotic even though the classical limit is not. While some of the quantum chaotic attractors are of the same family as the classical limiting attractors, we also find a quantum attractor with no classical counterpart. These phenomena occur in experimentally accessible regimes.

The semiclassical regime of the chaotic quantum-classical transition

Benjamin D. Greenbaum, Salman Habib, Kosuke Shizume +1 more

An analysis of the semiclassical regime of the quantum-classical transition is given for open, bounded, one-dimensional chaotic dynamical systems. Environmental fluctuations-characteristic of all realistic dynamical systems-suppress the development of a fine structure in classical phase space and damp nonlocal contributions to the semiclassical Wigner function, which would otherwise invalidate the approximation. This dual regularization of the singular nature of the semiclassical limit is demonstrated by a numerical investigation of the chaotic Duffing oscillator.

DISSIPATIVE CHAOS IN QUANTUM DISTRIBUTIONS

T. V. GEVORGYAN, S. B. MANVELYAN, A. R. SHAHINYAN +1 more

We discuss some problems of dissipative chaos for open quantum systems in the framework of semiclassical and quantum distributions. For this goal, we propose a driven nonlinear oscillator with time-dependent coefficients, i.e. with time-dependent Kerr-nonlinearity and time-modulated driving field. This model showing both regular and chaotic dynamics in the classical limit is realized in several experimental schemes. Quantum dissipative chaos is analyzed on the base of numerical method of quantum trajectories. Three quantities are studied: the Wigner function of oscillatory mode from the point of view of quantum-assemble theory and both semiclassical Poincare section and quantum Poincare section calculated on a single quantum trajectory. The comparatively analysis of these distributions for various operational chaotic regimes of the models is performed, as well as scaling invariance in dissipative chaos and quantum interference effects assisted by chaos are discussed.

Decoherence of qubits interacting with a nonlinear dissipative classical or quantum system

Nikola Burić

Quantum trajectories given by the quantum state diffusion theory are used to study the dynamics of a pair of qubits interacting with the quantized Duffing oscillator. The latter is a nonlinear dissipative and driven quantum system that in the semiclassical limit displays typical bifurcations and chaotic behavior of the classical model. It is shown that the oscillator part of the qubits-oscillator system in the semiclassical limit is well described by the classical model despite the oscillator-qubit interaction. On the other hand, exact quantum dynamics of the qubits pair is completely different from the classical model as long as there is non-negligible qubit-oscillator interaction. Dynamics of the interqubits entanglement and the qubits pair von Neumann entropy is studied in the deeply quantum and various degrees of semiclassical regimes and for different values of the oscillator's bifurcation parameter. It is concluded that the decoherence of the qubits pair by the dissipative nonlinear oscillator is more effective when the oscillator is in the more classical regime, and if the semiclassical oscillator dynamics is chaotic rather than regular.
