Abstract

In this paper, we propose a way to achieve protected universal computation in a neutral-atom quantum computer subject to collective dephasing. Our proposal relies on the existence of a decoherence-free subspace (DFS), resulting from symmetry properties of the errors. After briefly describing the physical system and the error model considered, we show how to encode information into the DFS and build a complete set of safe universal gates. Finally, we provide numerical simulations for the fidelity of the different gates in the presence of time-dependent phase errors and discuss their performance and practical feasibility.

Universal Quantum Computation in Decoherence-Free Subspace with Neutral Atoms

Peng Xue, Yun‐Feng Xiao

We show how realistic cavity-assisted interaction between neutral atoms and coherent optical pulses, and measurement techniques, combined with optical transportation of atoms, allow for a universal set of quantum gates acting on decoherence--free subspace in a deterministic way. The logical qubits are immunized to the dominant source of decoherece-dephasing, while the influences of additional errors are shown by numerical simulations. We analyze the performance and stability of all required operations and emphasize that all techniques are feasible with current experimental technology.

Universal quantum computation in decoherence-free subspaces with hot trapped ions

Leandro Aolita, L. Davidovich, Kihwan Kim +1 more

We consider interactions that generate a universal set of quantum gates on logical qubits encoded in a collective-dephasing-free subspace, and discuss their implementations with trapped ions. This allows for the removal of the by-far largest source of decoherence in current trapped-ion experiments, collective dephasing. In addition, an explicit parametrization of all two-body Hamiltonians able to generate such gates without the system's state ever exiting the protected subspace is provided.

Theory of decoherence-free fault-tolerant universal quantum computation

Julia Kempe, Dave Bacon, Daniel A. Lidar +1 more

Universal quantum computation on decoherence-free subspaces and subsystems (DFSs) is examined with particular emphasis on using only physically relevant interactions. A necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of decoherence-free (noiseless) subsystems in the Markovian regime is derived here for the first time. A stabilizer formalism for DFSs is then developed which allows for the explicit understanding of these in their dual role as quantum error correcting codes. Conditions for the existence of Hamiltonians whose induced evolution always preserves a DFS are derived within this stabilizer formalism. Two possible collective decoherence mechanisms arising from permutation symmetries of the system-bath coupling are examined within this framework. It is shown that in both cases universal quantum computation which always preserves the DFS (natural fault-tolerant computation) can be performed using only two-body interactions. This is in marked contrast to standard error correcting codes, where all known constructions using one- or two-body interactions must leave the code space during the on-time of the fault-tolerant gates. A further consequence of our universality construction is that a single exchange Hamiltonian can be used to perform universal quantum computation on an encoded space whose asymptotic coding efficiency is unity. The exchange Hamiltonian, which is naturally present in many quantum systems, is thus asymptotically universal.

Universal quantum computation with quantum-dot cellular automata in decoherence-free subspace

Zhenyu Xu, Mang Feng, Wei-Min Zhang

We investigate the possibility to have electron-pairs in decoherence-free subspace (DFS), by means of the quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) and single-spin rotations, to deterministically carry out a universal quantum computation with high-fidelity. We show that our QCA device with electrons tunneling in two dimensions is very suitable for DFS encoding, and argue that our design favors a scalable quantum computation robust to collective dephasing errors.

Universal quantum computation with electronic qubits in decoherence-free subspace

Xinglai Zhang, Mang Feng, K. Gao

We investigate how to carry out universal quantum computation deterministically with free electrons in decoherence-free subspace by using polarizing beam splitters, charge detectors, and single-spin rotations. Quantum information in our case is encoded in spin degrees of freedom of the electron-pairs which construct a decoherence-free subspace. We design building blocks for two noncommutable single-logic-qubit gates and a logic controlled phase gate, based on which a universal and scalable quantum information processing robust to dephasing is available in a deterministic way.

Efficient preparation of decoherence-free subspace basis states

Zi-Ming Li, Yu-xi Liu

Decoherence-free subspace (DFS) provides a crucial mechanism for passive error mitigation in quantum computation by encoding information within symmetry-protected subspaces of the Hilbert space, which are immune from collective decoherence. Constructing a complete set of orthogonal basis states for the DFS is essential to realize fault-tolerant quantum computation by using the DFS codes. However, existing methods for preparing these basis states are often non-scalable, platform-specific, or yield mixed states. Here, we propose a deterministic approach to prepare pure, orthogonal and complete DFS basis states for systems of arbitrary size composed of qubits. Our method employs projective measurements and quantum circuits with single-qubit, two-qubit and Toffoli gates. We provide a rigorous resource cost analysis both mathematically and numerically. Meanwhile, we demonstrate the realizability of our method on NISQ devices by discussing how to implement our method on a superconducting chip. The proposed method offers a universal solution for preparing the DFS basis states across diverse quantum computing platforms and system sizes, which is realizable in the NISQ era.
