Abstract

We investigate an optical scheme to conditionally engineer quantum states using a beam splitter, homodyne detection, and a squeezed vacuum as an ancillar state. This scheme is efficient in producing non-Gaussian quantum states such as squeezed single photons and superpositions of coherent states (SCSs). We show that a SCS with well defined parity and high fidelity can be generated from a Fock state of $n\ensuremath{\leqslant}4$, and conjecture that this can be generalized for an arbitrary $n$ Fock state. We describe our experimental demonstration of this scheme using coherent input states and measuring experimental fidelities that are only achievable using quantum resources.

Quantum-state engineering with continuous-variable postselection

We present a scheme to conditionally engineer an optical quantum system via continuous-variable measurements. This scheme yields high-fidelity squeezed single photons and a superposition of coherent states, from input single- and two-photon Fock states, respectively. The input Fock state is interacted with an ancilla squeezed vacuum state using a beam splitter. We transform the quantum system by postselecting on the continuous-observable measurement outcome of the ancilla state. We experimentally demonstrate the principles of this scheme using coherent states and experimentally measure fidelities that are only achievable using quantum resources.

Conditional generation of arbitrary single-mode quantum states of light by repeated photon subtractions

Jaromı́r Fiurášek, Raúl García−Patrón, Nicolas J. Cerf

We propose a scheme for the conditional generation of arbitrary finite superpositions of Fock states in a single mode of a traveling optical field. The setup requires a source of squeezed vacuum states, beam splitters, strong coherent beams, photodetectors with single-photon sensitivity, and a final squeezer. If we want to generate a squeezed superposition of Fock states, which is sufficient in several applications, then the last squeezer is not even needed. The thrust of this method is that it achieves a high fidelity without requiring photodetectors with a high efficiency or a single-photon resolution. The possibility to improve its scaling by using a quantum memory is also discussed.

Improving the efficiency of quantum engineering of SCSs by adding two demultiplexed input photons

Mikhail S. Podoshvedov, Sergey A. Podoshvedov

Conditional addition and subtraction of photons is a powerful tool for quantum engineering of continuous variable (CV) states that forms the fundamental building blocks of advanced photonic technologies. For high fidelity information processing, precise control of quantum engineering of CV states is highly demanded. We propose a scheme for measurement induced quantum engineering of even/odd superposition of coherent states (SCSs) of amplitude>2.5 and with fidelity exceeding>0.99. It includes single-mode squeezed vacuum (SMSV) state and two separate photons. The output parameters of the SCSs are tuned using initial squeezing of the SMSV states and the beam splitter (BS) parameter and depend on number of subtracted photons in two measurement channels. The introduction of two demultiplexed photons is a key element to improving the efficiency of quantum engineering of SCSs. When using two additional photons, both an increase in the fidelity of the output CV state and a gain in probability at least by an order of magnitude compared to the case without auxiliary input photons are observed.

Conditional generation of an arbitrary superposition of coherent states

Masahiro Takeoka, Masahide Sasaki

We present a scheme to conditionally generate an arbitrary superposition of a pair of coherent states from a squeezed vacuum by means of the modified photon subtraction where a coherent state ancilla and two on/off type detectors are used. We show that, even including realistic imperfections of the detectors, our scheme can generate a target state with a high fidelity. The amplitude of the generated states can be amplified by conditional homodyne detections.
