Casimir-Polder interaction between an excited atom and a gas dielectric medium

Abstract

The Casimir-Polder potential for interaction between an excited atom and a ground-state one in the retarded case is obtained with the help of perturbation technique. The potential drops as ${R}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$ with the distance between the atoms [E. A. Power and T. Thirunamachandran, Phys. Rev. A 47, 2539 (1993)]. It results in divergent integrals for interaction between an excited atom and a dilute gas medium. We investigate interaction between two atoms embedded in a dielectric medium with the help of a method that enables us to make calculations beyond the perturbation technique. We take into account absorption of photons in the medium. This approach solves the problem of divergence. We consider interaction between an excited atom and a planar dielectric gas medium of ground-state atoms. We show that the retarded interaction between an excited atom and a gas of ground-state atoms is not oscillating but follows a simple power law. We show that to obtain a conventional nonretarded expression for the van der Waals force between an excited atom and a dilute gas, the distance between the atom and the interface should be much smaller than the free mean path of a photon in the medium. Interaction between an excited atom and a hemisphere of ground-state atoms is considered.

Casimir-Polder interaction of excited media

Yu. B. Sherkunov

The potential of long-range interaction between two dissimilar atoms, one of which is excited, drops as 1/R 2 with the distance for the Casimir-Polder limit of large distances in comparison with the wave-length of atom transitions (E.A. Power and T. Thirunamachandran, Phys. Rev. A 51, 3660 (1995)). It is shown that such a dependence, obtained with the help of perturbation technique, results in a divergence for the interaction potential between an excited atom and a medium of dilute gas. We develop a nonperturbative method based upon quantum Green’s functions (Yu. Sherkunov, Phys. Rev. A 72, 052703 (2005)) to calculate the interaction potential for an excited atom and a ground-state atom embedded in a dielectric medium, taking into account the absorption of photons in the dielectric medium. The exponential suppression of the interaction between the atoms is demonstrated. The force acting on an excited atom near the interface of dilute gas medium is calculated. The result is no more divergent. The force between gas media in Casimir-Polder regime is calculated as well.

van der Waals interactions between excited-state atoms and dispersive dielectric surfaces

M. Fichet, F. Schuller, Daniel Bloch +1 more

van der Waals interactions between atoms and dielectric surfaces are reinvestigated. To describe the nonretarded interaction potential between a dispersive dielectric surface and an atom in an arbitrary internal energy state, we derive a general expression in terms of an integral, over real frequency, of the combined atom and surface polarizabilities. It is shown that, for excited atoms, the expression is equivalent to the one obtained by Wylie and Sipe [Phys. Rev. A 32, 2030 (1985)]. We thus demonstrate how to extend this approach to excited atoms interacting with birefringent dielectrics. For isotropic dielectrics, a method of integration in closed form allows us to derive an approximate formula for the van der Waals interaction constant in terms of resonance frequencies and oscillator strengths of both the atom and the dielectric. Frequency-dependent ``dielectric reflection'' coefficients are introduced for virtual atomic dipole couplings either in absorption or in emission. In absorption, the reflection coefficient is always positive and smaller than unity. In emission, it may take arbitrary values, positive or negative (corresponding to van der Waals repulsion). Such a behavior is shown to be related to resonant excitation exchange between the atomic system and the dielectric medium, when an atomic transition frequency gets in resonance with a dielectric absorption band. Numerical calculations performed for the cesium-sapphire system are shown to be in good agreement with data obtained by selective-reflection spectroscopy. Finally, experimental tests of the birefringent character of the sapphire response are discussed.

Body-Assisted van der Waals Interaction between Excited Atoms

Hassan Safari, Mohammad Reza Karimpour

We present a formula for the body-assisted van der Waals interaction potential between two atoms, one or both being prepared in an excited energy eigenstate. The presence of an arbitrary arrangement for a material environment is taken into account via the Green function. The resulting formula supports one of two conflicting findings recorded. The consistency of our formula is investigated by applying it for the case of two atoms in free space and comparing the resulting expression with the one found from the limiting Casimir-Polder potential between an excited atom and a small dielectric sphere.

Casimir-Polder interaction between an atom and a dielectric slab

Ana M. Contreras-Reyes, Claudia Eberlein

We present an explicit analytic calculation of the energy-level shift of an atom in front of a nondispersive and nondissipative dielectric slab. We work with the fully quantized electromagnetic field, taking retardation into account. We give the shift as a two-dimensional integral and use asymptotic analysis to find expressions for it in various retarded and nonretarded limiting cases. The results can be used to estimate the energy shift of an atom close to layered microstructures.

Quantum electrodynamics of an atom in front of a non–dispersive dielectric half–space

Shin-Tza Wu, Claudia Eberlein

The energy–level shifts and the change in the rate of spontaneous emission are calculated for an atom located at a distanceZ from a dielectric half–space. The dielectric is a non–dispersive and non–absorbing medium characterized by a constant real refractive indexn. The explicit analytic formulae derived are applicable for arbitrary values ofn. All results are analysed in the non-retarded and retarded limits, which apply to the atom being close to or far from the interface, respectively, i.e. toZ being small or large on the scale of a wavelength of a typical atomic transition. For ground-state atoms, the energy–level shift varies as 1/Z3 in the non–retarded regime and as 1/Z4 in the retarded regime, which agrees with the Casimir–Polder result for the limitn→α. For excited–state atoms, the energy–level shifts receive additional contributions that oscillate with the distanceZ from the interface.

Dynamical Casimir-Polder energy between an excited- and a ground-state atom

Lucia Rizzuto, Roberto Passante, Franco Persico

We consider the Casimir-Polder interaction between two atoms, one in the ground state and the other in its excited state. The interaction is time dependent for this system, because of the dynamical self-dressing and the spontaneous decay of the excited atom. We calculate the dynamical Casimir-Polder potential between the two atoms using an effective Hamiltonian approach. The results obtained and their physical meaning are discussed and compared with previous results based on a time-independent approach, which uses a nonnormalizable dressed state for the excited atom.
