Abstract

Optical lattices can be used to simulate quantum baths and hence they can be of fundamental help to study, in a controlled way, the emergence of decoherence in quantum systems. Here we show how to implement a pure dephasing model for a two-level system coupled to an interacting spin bath. In this scheme it is possible to implement a large variety of spin environments embracing Ising, XY and Heisenberg universality classes. After having introduced the model, we calculate exactly the decoherence for the Ising and the XY spin bath model. We find universal features depending on the critical behaviour of the spin bath, both in the short- and long-time limits. The rich scenario that emerges can be tested experimentally and can be of importance for the understanding of the coherence loss in open quantum systems.

Decoherence induced by interacting quantum spin baths

We study decoherence induced on a two-level system coupled to a one-dimensional quantum spin chain. We consider the cases where the dynamics of the chain is determined by the Ising, $XY$, or Heisenberg exchange Hamiltonian. This model of quantum baths can be of fundamental importance for the understanding of decoherence in open quantum systems, since it can be experimentally engineered by using atoms in optical lattices. As an example, here we show how to implement a pure dephasing model for a qubit system coupled to an interacting spin bath. We provide results that go beyond the case of a central spin coupled uniformly to all the spins of the bath, in particular showing what happens when the bath enters different phases, or becomes critical; we also study the dependence of the coherence loss on the number of bath spins to which the system is coupled and we describe a coupling-independent regime in which decoherence exhibits universal features, irrespective of the system-environment coupling strength. Finally, we establish a relation between decoherence and entanglement inside the bath. For the Ising and the $XY$ models we are able to give an exact expression for the decay of coherences, while for the Heisenberg bath we resort to the numerical time-dependent density matrix renormalization group.

Decoherence by engineered quantum baths

Rossini, D, Calarco, T, Vittorio Giovannetti +2 more

We introduce, and determine decoherence for, a wide class of non-trivial quantum spin baths which embrace Ising, XY and Heisenberg universality classes coupled to a two-level system. For the XY and Ising universality classes we provide an exact expression for the decay of the loss of coherence beyond the case of a central spin coupled uniformly to all the spins of the baths which has been discussed so far in the literature. In the case of the Heisenberg spin bath we study the decoherence by means of the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group. We show how these baths can be engineered, by using atoms in optical lattices.

Dephasing in the central spin problem with long-range Ising spin-bath coupling

Attar, Kevin Ben, Nir Bar‐Gill

The study of coherence dynamics in open quantum systems, specifically addressing various physical realizations of quantum systems and environments, is a long-standing and central pillar of quantum science and technology. As such, a large body of work establishes a firm theoretical understanding of these processes. Nevertheless, a fundamental aspect of decoherence dynamics, namely the central limit theorem of qubit dephasing in the central spin model, which leads to a Gaussian approximation, lacks formal proof in realistically relevant scenarios. Here we prove this approximation for a bath depicted by an Ising spin system, in the presence of disorder and several (most relevant) functional forms of qubit-bath coupling. Importantly, we show that in certain cases, namely for short-range (exponentially decaying) coupling, this approximation breaks. These results provide a theoretical framework for studying decoherence dynamics in various systems and lead to insights into dephasing behavior with implications for applications in quantum information, quantum computing, and other quantum technologies.

Decoherence in the Pure Dephasing Spin-Boson Model with Hermitian or Non-Hermitian Bath

Yue-Hong Wu, Ning-Hua Tong

In this paper, we investigate the decoherence of qubit due to its coupling to a Hermitian or a non-Hermitian bath within the pure dephasing spin-boson model. First, using this model, we analytically establish the previously anticipated similarity between the non-equilibrium and the equilibrium correlation functions $P_x(t)$ and $C_x(t)$. Then, in the short/long time asymptotic behaviors of $P_x(t)$, we find singular dependence on $A$ (coupling strength) and $s$ (bath exponent) at their integer values. Finally, we find that the non-Hermitian bath tends to suppress the decoherence of qubit for all values of $A$ and $s$, in contrast to the conclusion of Dey et al. . Our results show the potential of non-Hermitian environment engineering in suppressing the decoherence of qubit.

Universal dynamics of quantum spin decoherence in a nuclear spin bath

Yi-Ya Tian, Pochung Chen, Daw-Wei Wang

We systematically investigate the universal spin decoherence dynamics of a localized electron in an arbitrary nuclear spin bath, which can even be far away from equilibrium due to the weak nuclear-lattice interaction. We show that the electron spin relaxation dynamics (as well as spin pure dephasing and Hahn echo decay) can always have a universal behavior as long as the initial state is composed of a sufficiently large amount of spin eigenstates. For a given system, the pattern of the universal dynamics depends on the complicated initial condition only via a single parameter, which measures the amount of phase coherence between different spin eigenstates in the initial state. Our results apply even when the number of the involved nuclei is not large and, therefore, provide a solid foundation in the comparison of the theoretical/numerical results to the experimental measurement. As an example, we also show the numerical results for systems of noninteracting spin bath in a zero magnetic field regime and discuss the features of universal decoherent dynamics.

Oscillator bath simulation of the spin bath

Seyyed M. H. Halataei

Open quantum systems are subject to interaction with their surrounding environment. In many applications, at low temperatures, quantum environments fall into two universality classes of models: Caldeira-Leggett oscillator bath models and Prokof'ev-Stamp spin bath models. The two classes are commonly recognized to be distinct and to have strikingly different effects on principal systems, except at weak coupling limits. However, I show here, in contrast, that oscillator bath models can simulate the effect of spin bath models in strong coupling limit of the spin bath. I choose parameters of the oscillator bath models such that they produce incoherent relaxation, just as in the spin bath models, with relaxation rates for a two-state system (a qubit) equivalent to those of the spin bath models in the strong coupling limit.
