Calculation of the hidden symmetry operator for a -symmetric square well

Abstract

It has been shown that a Hamiltonian with an unbroken $\cP\cT$ symmetry also possesses a hidden symmetry that is represented by the linear operator $\cC$. This symmetry operator $\cC$ guarantees that the Hamiltonian acts on a Hilbert space with an inner product that is both positive definite and conserved in time, thereby ensuring that the Hamiltonian can be used to define a unitary theory of quantum mechanics. In this paper it is shown how to construct the operator $\cC$ for the $\cP\cT$-symmetric square well using perturbative techniques.

In a recent paper it was shown that if a Hamiltonian H has an unbroken 𝒫𝒯 symmetry, then it also possesses a hidden symmetry represented by the linear operator 𝒞. The operator 𝒞 commutes with both H and 𝒫𝒯. The inner product with respect to 𝒞𝒫𝒯 is associated with a positive norm and the quantum theory built on the associated Hilbert space is unitary. In this paper it is shown how to construct the operator 𝒞 for the non-Hermitian 𝒫𝒯-symmetric Hamiltonian H = 1/2 p 2 + 1/2 x 2 + i x 3 using perturbative techniques. It is also shown how to construct the operator 𝒞 for H = 1/2 p 2 + 1/2 x 2 − x 4 using nonperturbative methods.

CPT-Frames for Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians

Based on the P T-symmetric quantum theory, the concepts of P T-frame,P T-symmetric operator and CPT-frame on a Hilbert space K and for an operator on K are proposed. It is proved that the spectrum and point spectrum of a P T-symmetric linear operator are both symmetric with respect to the real axis and the eigenvalues of an unbroken P T-symmetric operator are real. For a linear operator H on Cd,it is proved that H has unbroken P T symmetry if and only if it has d diferent eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenstates are eigenstates of P T.Given a C P T-frame on K,a new positive inner product on K is induced and called C P T-inner product.Te relationship between the CP T-adjoint and the Dirac adjoint of a densely defined linear operator is derived, and it is proved that an operator which has a bounded CP T-frame is CP T-Hermitian if and only if it is T-symmetric,in that case,it is similar to a Hermitian operator. The existence of an operator C consisting of a CP T-frame is discussed. These concepts and results will serve a mathematical discussion about P T-symmetric quantum mechanics.

Geometry of PT-symmetric quantum mechanics

Carl M. Bender, Dorje C. Brody, Lane P. Hughston +1 more

Recently, much research has been carried out on Hamiltonians that are not Hermitian but are symmetric under space-time reflection, that is, Hamiltonians that exhibit PT symmetry. Investigations of the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem associated with such Hamiltonians have shown that in many cases the entire energy spectrum is real and positive and that the eigenfunctions form an orthogonal and complete basis. Furthermore, the quantum theories determined by such Hamiltonians have been shown to be consistent in the sense that the probabilities are positive and the dynamical trajectories are unitary. However, the geometrical structures that underlie quantum theories formulated in terms of such Hamiltonians have hitherto not been fully understood. This paper studies in detail the geometric properties of a Hilbert space endowed with a parity structure and analyses the characteristics of a PT-symmetric Hamiltonian and its eigenstates. A canonical relationship between a PT-symmetric operator and a Hermitian operator is established. It is shown that the quadratic form corresponding to the parity operator, in particular, gives rise to a natural partition of the Hilbert space into two halves corresponding to states having positive and negative PT norm. The indefiniteness of the norm can be circumvented by introducing a symmetry operator C that defines a positive definite inner product by means of a CPT conjugation operation.

Extension of PT -symmetric quantum mechanics to quantum field theory with cubic interaction

Carl M. Bender, Dorje C. Brody, Hugh F Jones

It has recently been shown that a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian H possessing an unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry (i) has a real spectrum that is bounded below, and (ii) defines a unitary theory of quantum mechanics with positive norm. The proof of unitarity requires a linear operator $\mathcal{C},$ which was originally defined as a sum over the eigenfunctions of H. However, using this definition to calculate $\mathcal{C}$ is cumbersome in quantum mechanics and impossible in quantum field theory. An alternative method is devised here for calculating $\mathcal{C}$ directly in terms of the operator dynamical variables of the quantum theory. This method is general and applies to a variety of quantum mechanical systems having several degrees of freedom. More importantly, this method is used to calculate the $\mathcal{C}$ operator in quantum field theory. The $\mathcal{C}$ operator is a time-independent observable in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric quantum field theory.

Based on the PT-symmetric quantum theory, the concepts of PT-frame, PT-symmetric operator and CPT-frame on a Hilbert space K and for an operator on K are proposed. It is proved that the spectrum and point spectrum of a PT-symmetric linear operator are both symmetric with respect to the real axis and the eigenvalues of an unbroken PT-symmetric operator are real. For a linear operator H on C d , it is proved that H has unbroken PT-symmetry if and only if it has d different eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenstates are eigenstates of PT. Given a CPT-frame on K, a new positive inner product on K is induced and called CPT-inner product. Te relationship between the CPT-adjoint and the Dirac adjoint of a densely defined linear operator is derived, and it is proved that an operator which has a bounded CPT-frame is CPT-Hermitian if and only if it is T-symmetric, in that case, it is similar to a Hermitian operator. The existence of an operator C consisting of a CPT-frame is discussed. These concepts and results will serve a mathematical discussion about PT-symmetric quantum mechanics.
