Abstract

A relation between entanglement and criticality of spin chains is established. The entanglement we exploit is shared between auxiliary particles, which are isolated from each other, but are coupled to the same critical spin-$1∕2$ chain. We analytically evaluate the reduced density matrix, and numerically show the entanglement of the auxiliary particles in the proximity of the critical points of the spin chain. We find that the entanglement induced by the spin chain may reach 1, and it can signal very well the critical points of the chain. A physical understanding and experimental realization with trapped ions are presented.

Entanglement at the boundary of spin chains near a quantum critical point and in systems with boundary critical points

Tobias Stauber, F. Guinea

We analyze the entanglement properties of spins (qubits) attached to the boundary of spin chains near quantum critical points, or to dissipative environments, near a boundary critical point, such as Kondo-like systems or the dissipative two level system. In the first case, we show that the properties of the entanglement are significantly different from those for bulk spins. The influence of the proximity to a transition is less marked at the boundary. In the second case, our results indicate that the entanglement changes abruptly at the point where coherent quantum oscillations cease to exist. The phase transition modifies the entanglement significantly less.

Multipartite entanglement from matrix-product states and a quantum phase transition

Guo-Qing Zhang, Wei Wu, Jing‐Bo Xu

We investigate multipartite entanglement and a quantum phase transition for spin chain systems by making use of the density-matrix renormalization-group method in the form of matrix-product states. It is found that multipartite entanglement changes dramatically near the critical region and the residual-to-global entanglement ratio reaches its maximum at the critical point of the quantum phase transition. These results indicate that multipartite entanglement as well as the residual-to-global entanglement ratio can serve as good indicators to detect a quantum phase transition. We also demonstrate a linear relation between the next-nearest-neighbor interaction strength and the critical magnetic field for an $XYZ$ spin chain by using multipartite entanglement and quantum coherence.

Entanglement Spectrum, Critical Exponents, and Order Parameters in Quantum Spin Chains

Gabriele De Chiara, Luca Lepori, Maciej Lewenstein +1 more

We investigate the entanglement spectrum near criticality in finite quantum spin chains. Using finite size scaling we show that when approaching a quantum phase transition, the Schmidt gap, i.e., the difference between the two largest eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix λ(1), λ(2), signals the critical point and scales with universal critical exponents related to the relevant operators of the corresponding perturbed conformal field theory describing the critical point. Such scaling behavior allows us to identify explicitly the Schmidt gap as a local order parameter.

Entanglement and decoherence in near-critical qubit chains

V. Khveshchenko

We study the problem of environmentally-induced decoherence in a near-critical one-dimensional system of N>>1 coupled qubits. Using the Jordan-Wigner fermion representation of the qubit operators we identify the decoherence rates relevant for the two-qubit reduced density matrix. We find that a desirable onset of massive shared entanglement in the near-critical regime comes at the expense of decoherence which also tends to increase as the system is tuned towards criticality. Our results reveal rather contradictory general requirements that future designs of a qubit chain-based quantum information processor will need to satisfy. Comment: Latex, 5 pages, no figures

Quantum discord induced by a spin chain with quantum phase transition

Zhe Sun, Xiao-Ming Lu, Lijun Song

We study quantum discord induced by a quantum-critical environment. Two spin halves are independently coupled to the common environment which is modelled by the Ising spin chain in a transverse field. During the time evolution, non-zero discord is induced whereas entanglement cannot be induced due to the special initial state chosen by us. For some cases we analytically obtain quantum discord and its geometric measure. From the numerical results, one can observe that induced quantum discord increases quickly from zero to a steady value when the environment approaches the critical point. Moreover, induced discord may reach its maximum close to the critical point. The special phenomena of induced discord can be used to indicate quantum criticality. We also consider another environment modelled by the spin-1/2 XX chain with three-spin interaction, which also displays second-order quantum phase transition.
