Entanglement at the boundary of spin chains near a quantum critical point and in systems with boundary critical points

Abstract

We analyze the entanglement properties of spins (qubits) attached to the boundary of spin chains near quantum critical points, or to dissipative environments, near a boundary critical point, such as Kondo-like systems or the dissipative two level system. In the first case, we show that the properties of the entanglement are significantly different from those for bulk spins. The influence of the proximity to a transition is less marked at the boundary. In the second case, our results indicate that the entanglement changes abruptly at the point where coherent quantum oscillations cease to exist. The phase transition modifies the entanglement significantly less.

Entanglement of spin chains with general boundaries and of dissipative systems

Tobias Stauber, F. Guinea

We analyze the entanglement properties of spins (qubits) close to the boundary of spin chains in the vicinity of a quantum critical point and show that the concurrence at the boundary is significantly different from the one of bulk spins. We also discuss the von Neumann entropy of dissipative environments in the vicinity of a (boundary) critical point, such as two Ising-coupled Kondo-impurities or the dissipative two-level system. Our results indicate that the entanglement (concurrence and/or von Neumann entropy) changes abruptly at the point where coherent quantum oscillations cease to exist. The phase transition modifies significantly less the entanglement if no symmetry breaking field is applied and we argue that this might be a general property of the entanglement of dissipative systems. We finally analyze the entanglement of an harmonic chain between the two ends as function of the system size.

Entanglement and quantum phase transitions in matrix-product spin-1 chains

S. Alipour, Vahid Karimipour, Laleh Memarzadeh

We consider a one-parameter family of matrix-product states of spin-1 particles on a periodic chain and study in detail the entanglement properties of such a state. In particular, we calculate exactly the entanglement of one site with the rest of the chain, and the entanglement of two distant sites with each other, and show that the derivative of both these properties diverge when the parameter $g$ of the states passes through a critical point. Such a point can be called a point of quantum phase transition, since at this point the character of the matrix-product state, which is the ground state of a Hamiltonian, changes discontinuously. We also study the finite size effects and show how the entanglement depends on the size of the chain. This later part is relevant to the field of quantum computation where the problem of initial state preparation in finite arrays of qubits or qutrits is important. It is also shown that the entanglement of two sites have scaling behavior near the critical point.

Entanglement in Quantum Critical Phenomena

Guifré Vidal, José Ignacio Latorre, E. Rico +1 more

Entanglement, one of the most intriguing features of quantum theory and a main resource in quantum information science, is expected to play a crucial role also in the study of quantum phase transitions, where it is responsible for the appearance of long-range correlations. We investigate, through a microscopic calculation, the scaling properties of entanglement in spin chain systems, both near and at a quantum critical point. Our results establish a precise connection between concepts of quantum information, condensed matter physics, and quantum field theory, by showing that the behavior of critical entanglement in spin systems is analogous to that of entropy in conformal field theories. We explore some of the implications of this connection.

Quantum phase transition and entanglement in XXZ Heisenberg spin chain

N. Hachem, El Mostafa Jalal, M. Salama +2 more

Abstract Using the quantum renormalization group approach, we have investigated the entanglement and critical behavior of an anisotropic XXZ Heisenberg spin chain. The resolution of the quantum renormalization equations yields stable and unstable fixed points, corresponding respectively to the phases and critical point of the system. It is shown that a quantum phase transition exists at a critical anisotropy parameter , separating the Néel phase from the spin-fluid phase. Then, the concurrence between two blocks of sites and the quantum coherence have been calculated and presented for various renormalization group iterations. In the thermodynamic limit, i.e. , for higher renormalization steps, the concurrence and coherence exhibit two different saturated values in the two regions separated by Δ c . The first derivative of concurrence diverges at the critical point as the size of the chain increases, showing nonanalytic behavior. Moreover, the scaling behavior has been examined near the critical point with some universal exponential scaling laws.

Entanglement and quantum phase transitions in quantum mixed spin chains

Shangbin Li, Zhaoxin Xu, Jianhui Dai +1 more

The ground entanglement and thermal entanglement in quantum mixed spin chains consisting of two integer spins 1 and two half-integer spins $\frac{1}{2}$ arrayed as $\frac{1}{2}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\frac{1}{2}\text{\ensuremath{-}}1\text{\ensuremath{-}}1$ in a unit cell with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor couplings ${J}_{1}$ $({J}_{2})$ between the spins of equal (different) magnitudes are investigated by employing the logarithmic negativity as entanglement measure. The ground entanglement transition found here is closely related to the valence-bond-solid phase transition, and the thermal entanglement near the critical point is calculated and it is shown that two distinct behaviors exist in the nearest-neighbor same kind of spins and different kind of spins, respectively.
