Comment on equivalence between quantum phase transition phenomena in radiation-matter and magnetic systems

Abstract

In this Comment we show that the temperature-dependent effective Hamiltonian derived by Reslen {\it et al} [Europhys. Lett., {\bf 69} (2005) 8] or that one by Liberti and Zaffino [arXiv:cond-mat/0503742] for the Dicke model cannot be correct for any temperature. They both violate a rigorous result. The former is correct only in the quantum (zero-temperature) limit while the last one only in the classical (infinite temperature) limit. The fact that the Dicke model belongs to the universality class of the infinitely coordinated transverse-field XY model is known for more then 30 years.

Once more on the equivalence between quantum phase transition phenomena in radiation-matter and magnetic systems

J.G. Brankov, N. S. Tonchev, Valentin Anatol'evich Zagrebnov

In answer to the replies of Reslen {\it et al} [arXiv: quant-ph/0507164 (2005)], and Liberti and Zaffino [arXiv:cond-mat/0507019, (2005)], we comment once more on the temperature-dependent effective Hamiltonians for the Dicke model derived by them in [Europhys. Lett., {\bf 69} (2005) 8] and [Eur. Phys. J., {\bf 44} (2005) 535], respectively. These approximate Hamiltonians cannot be correct for any finite nonzero temperature because they both violate a rigorous result. The fact that the Dicke model belongs to the universality class of, and its thermodynamics is described by the infinitely coordinated transverse-field XY model is known for more than 30 years.

Direct equivalence between quantum phase transition phenomena in radiation-matter and magnetic systems: Scaling of entanglement

Jose Reslen, Luis Quiroga, Neil F. Johnson

We show that the quantum phase transition arising in a standard radiation-matter model (Dicke model) belongs to the same universality class as the infinitely coordinated, transverse-field XY model. The effective qubit-qubit exchange interaction is shown to be proportional to the square of the qubit-radiation coupling. A universal finite-size scaling is derived for the corresponding two-qubit entanglement (concurrence) and a size-consistent effective Hamiltonian is proposed for the qubit subsystem.

Comment on "Role of Matter Interactions in Superradiant Phenomena"

Max Hörmann, Anja Langheld, Jonas Leibig +2 more

Recently, Mendonça et al. [arXiv:2503.04961] investigated the Dicke-XXZ model and the Dicke-Ising model. For the latter model, their calculated quantum phase diagram contradicts claims about the existence of an intermediate phase with superradiant and antiferromagnetic order and the change in order of some phase transition lines, observed in other studies. In this comment we demonstrate that both features are indeed present in the Dicke-Ising model for the investigated parameter range in [arXiv:2503.04961].

Thermodynamics of the extended Dicke model

Philipp Pilar

The derivation of effective light-matter Hamiltonians in the context of cavity QED is revisited and the importance of making the correct choice of gauge is demonstrated. Controversies surrounding the quantum Rabi model as to whether the ultrastrong coupling regime can be reached are resolved and the adequacy of the effective models when applied to a superconducting circuit setup is shown. The effects of finite temperatures on the superradiant phase transition and the crossover to the subradiant phase in the extended Dicke model are exhibited. Applicability and limitations of the Holstein-Primakoff approximation as well as a mean field approach to the extended Dicke model are investigated. The heat capacity of the extended Dicke model is examined for a broad range of parameters.

On the mathematical divergences emerging in the theory of critical phenomena within Boltzmann–Gibbs statistical mechanics

Constantino Tsallis

The standard Theory of Critical Phenomena within Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical mechanics is known to successfully predict, at any temperature differing from a continuous-phase-transition critical one, the (finite) values for thermodynamically relevant quantities such as isothermal magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, correlation length, Grüneisen parameter, and similar ones. However, at the precise critical point, empirically unreachable infinities emerge within that approach at the N→∞ thermodynamical limit. Such divergences, although mathematically correct, may be seen as poorly informative ones. Indeed, they make no distinction at all between say the Ising, XY, Heisenberg, and other models. Moreover, for say the XY model, they make no distinction whether the spins are, for instance, 1/2, 1 or 3/2, or whether the interactions are say first-neighbor or first-and-second-neighbor ones. The introduction of nonadditive entropic functionals within a consistently generalized statistical mechanics substantially improves the situation, i.e., it regularizes the theory providing informative finite values instead of mere infinities. This undoubtedly enriching fact is illustrated [Soares et al., Phys. Rev. B 111, L060409 (2025)] for the Grüneisen parameter at the zero-temperature quantum critical point of a spin-1/2 ferromagnetic Ising chain in the presence of a transverse magnetic field, by introducing the nonadditive entropic functional Sq with the unique value q=q⋆≡37-6=0.0828…, which precisely guarantees the thermodynamical extensivity of the entropy as mandated by the preservation of the Legendre-transform structure of classical thermodynamics.
