Observation of triply coincident nonlinearities in periodically poled KTiOPO_4

Abstract

We report the simultaneous quasi-phase-matching of all three possible nonlinearities for propagation along the X axis of periodically poled (PP) KTiOPO4 (KTP) for second-harmonic generation of 745 nm pulsed light from 1490 nm subpicosecond pulses in a PPKTP crystal with a 45.65 microm poling period. This confirms the recent Sellmeier fits for KTP by Kato and Takaoka [Appl. Opt. 41, 5040 (2002)]. Such coincident nonlinearities are of importance for realizing compact sources of multipartite continuous-variable entanglement [Pfister et al., Phys. Rev. A 70, 020302 (2004)], and we propose a new simpler method for entangling four fields on the basis of this triple coincidence.

Design of the Periodically Poled KTiOPO_4 Generating 852 and 1550 nm Bicolor Entangled Lights

Jiangrui Gao

In this paper,we theoretically design the second-order nonlinear periodically poled KTiOPO4 crystal(PPKTP) by the 0-type quasi phase matching of nonlinear coefficients d33.The period of PPKTP is 10.7 microns at 20 centigrade degree. The bicolor entanglement of 852 nm signal light and 1550 nm idle light can be generated when an optical parametric oscillator of the PPKTP is pumped by 550 nm light. One of entangled beams corresponds to Cs atomic transition line, the other corresponds to optical fiber communication wavelength. The entanglement is of importance for the quantum information network and atomic information storage.

Extended phase matching of second-harmonic generation in periodically poled KTiOPO4 with zero group-velocity mismatch

Friedrich König, Franco N. C. Wong

Under extended phase-matching conditions, the first frequency derivative of the wave-vector mismatch is zero and the phase-matching bandwidth is greatly increased. We present extensive three-wave mixing measurements of the wave-vector mismatch and obtain improved Sellmeier equations for KTiOPO4. We observed a type-II extended phase-matching bandwidth of 100 nm for second-harmonic generation in periodically poled KTiOPO4, centered at the fundamental wavelength of 1584 nm. Applications in quantum entanglement and frequency metrology are discussed.

Quasi-phase-matched concurrent nonlinearities in periodically poled KTiOPO_4 for quantum computing over the optical frequency comb

Matthew Pysher, Alon Bahabad, Peng Peng +2 more

We report the successful design and experimental implementation of three coincident nonlinear interactions, namely ZZZ (type 0), ZYY (type I), and YYZ/YZY (type II) second-harmonic generation of 780 nm light from a 1560 nm pump beam in a single, multigrating, periodically poled KTiOPO(4) crystal. The resulting nonlinear medium is the key component for making a scalable quantum computer over the optical frequency comb of a single optical parametric oscillator.

Numerical Investigation of High-Purity Polarization-Entangled Photon-Pair Generation in Non-Poled KTP Isomorphs

Ilhwan Kim, Donghwa Lee, Kwang Jo Lee

We investigated the high-purity entangled photon-pair generation in five kinds of “non-poled” potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) isomorphs (i.e., KTiOPO4, RbTiOPO4, KTiOAsO4, RbTiOAsO4, and CsTiOAsO4). The technique is based on the spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) under Type II extended phase matching (EPM), where the phase matching and the group velocity matching are simultaneously achieved between the interacting photons in non-poled crystals rather than periodically poled (PP) KTPs that are widely used for quantum experiments. We discussed both theoretically and numerically all aspects required to generate photon pairs in non-poled KTP isomorphs, in terms of the range of the beam propagation direction (or the spectral range of photons) and the corresponding effective nonlinearities and beam walk-offs. We showed that the SPDC efficiency can be increased in non-poled KTP isomorphs by 29% to 77% compared to PPKTP cases. The joint spectral analyses showed that photon pairs can be generated with high purities of 0.995–0.997 with proper pump filtering. In contrast to the PPKTP case, where the EPM is achieved only at one specific wavelength, the spectral position of photon pairs in the non-poled KTP isomorphs can be chosen over the wide range of 1883.8–2068.1 nm.

The single-cycle biphotons generated by noncollinear SPDC in the chirped QPM crystals

Jinbao Wang, Haibo Lin

We analysis the noncollinear Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion (SPDC) and compare the biphotons generated by the chirped Quasi-Phase-Matching (QPM) between the Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate (PPLN) and Periodically Poled KTiOPO4 (PPKTP) crystals. Due to the chirping of the crystals, the frequency response range of the biphotons would be greatly increased. For nonlinear SPDC, angular variation is limited (less than 0.06° in this paper), and the angle would narrow the frequency response range of the biphotons. We compare the effect of angle in PPLN crystals and PPKTP crystals for biphotons. Both the two crystals with chirped QPM, the single-cycle biphotons can be generated during noncollinear SPDC within a suitable angle range, which is favorable for wider applications in experiments.

Broadband amplitude squeezing in a periodically poled KTiOPO_4 waveguide

Matthew Pysher, Russell Bloomer, Christopher M. Kaleva +3 more

We generated -2.2 dB of broadband amplitude squeezing at 1064 nm in a periodically poled KTiOPO4 (PPKTP) waveguide by coupling of the fundamental and second-harmonic cw fields. This is the largest amount of squeezing obtained to date in a KTP waveguide, limited by propagation losses. This result paves the way for further improvements by use of lower-loss buried ion-exchanged waveguides.
