Change of Decoherence Scenario and Appearance of Localization due to Reservoir Anharmonicity

Abstract

Although coupling to a super-Ohmic bosonic reservoir leads only to partial dephasing on short time scales, exponential decay of coherence appears in the Markovian limit (for long times) if anharmonicity of the reservoir is taken into account. This effect not only qualitatively changes the decoherence scenario but also leads to localization processes in which superpositions of spatially separated states dephase with a rate that depends on the distance between the localized states. As an example of the latter process, we study the decay of coherence of an electron state delocalized over two semiconductor quantum dots due to anharmonicity of phonon modes.

Survival of coherence for open quantum systems in thermal baths

Filippo Giraldi, Francesco Petruccione

The loss of coherence in a general open quantum system interacting with a bosonic environment is analyzed. The reservoir is initially in a thermal state. The reduced dynamics is described by a non-Markovian time-local master equation. We consider spectral densities that are sub- or super-Ohmic at low frequencies and arbitrarily shaped at high frequencies. In the super-Ohmic regime, for noninteger frequency powers larger than 2, long time survival of coherence appears. In the latter regime, at vanishing temperature, the asymptotic amount of surviving coherence is stabilized to its initial value, up to a phase factor, by properly increasing the bandwidth and decreasing the low-frequency profile of the spectral density. For noninteger positive frequency powers less than 2, stretched exponential-like decoherence is found over long times. The relaxations to the asymptotic configurations become arbitrarily slow by approaching the frequency power 2 of the super-Ohmic regime. The same dependence on temperature, spectral density, and scale frequency appears for purity and concurrence of two qubits and coherence of a qubit.

Dephasing of two-spin states by electron-phonon interaction in semiconductor nanostructures: Spin-boson model with a dissipative reservoir

Xuedong Hu

We study electron-phonon interaction induced decoherence between two-electron singlet and triplet states in a semiconductor double quantum dot using a spin-boson model. We investigate the onset and time evolution of this dephasing, and study its dependence on quantum dot parameters such as dot size and double dot separations, as well as the host materials (GaAs and Si). We find that electron-phonon interaction causes an initial Gaussian decay of the off-diagonal density matrix element in the singlet-triplet Hilbert space, and a long-time exponential decay originating from phonon relaxation.

Complete and Partial Loss of Entanglement Due to a Phonon-Assisted Dephasing Process

Katarzyna Roszak, Paweł Machnikowski, Lucjan Jacak

We study the evolution of entanglement between two excitons in a double quantum dot system coupled to a super-Ohmic reservoir. As expected entanglement is more fragile than local coherence, but, surprisingly, for a set of pure states disentanglement can be complete in a finite time under conditions that lead to the usual partial pure-dephasing.

On spatial decoherence in many-body systems

Stefano Marcantoni, Marco Merkli

We study the dynamics of a many-body quantum system strongly interacting with a bosonic reservoir. The coupling is given by a potential operator for the system and it is linear in the field. We show that in the limit of infinite coupling strength the system undergoes instantaneous spatial decoherence. To resolve the decoherence process in time we consider large coupling strengths $λ$ and short times scaling as $t\propto λ^{-α}$, with $α\ge0$, in the limit $λ\rightarrow\infty$. On short time scales $α>1$ the dynamics is trivial while on longer ones $0\leα<1$ the decoherence is instantaneous. We show that the decoherence process is resolved exactly for $α=1$, defining the fine-grained time scale $τ=λt$. We construct an approximate effective evolution map of the many-body system with controlled error estimates. Generically, the effective dynamics is markovian, but not given by a dynamical semigroup. As a physical application we give a rigorous description of the phenomenon of localization of macroscopic quantum objects in position space.

Complete disentanglement by partial pure dephasing

Katarzyna Roszak, Paweł Machnikowski

We study the effect of pure dephasing on the entanglement of a pair of two-level subsystems (qubits). We show that partial dephasing induced by a super-Ohmic reservoir, corresponding to well-established properties of confined charge states and phonons in semiconductors, may lead to complete disentanglement. We show also that the disentanglement effect increases with growing distance between the two subsystems.

Controlling dephasing of coupled qubits via shared bath coherence

L. M. J. Hall, L. S. Sirkina, A. Morreau +2 more

The interaction of a quantum system with its environment limits its coherence time. This, in particular, restricts the utility of qubits in quantum information processing applications. In this paper, we show that the decoherence of a coupled qubit system can be minimized, or even eliminated, by exploiting the quantum coherence of the bath itself. We investigate the dephasing in a system of two spatially separated, electronically decoupled qubits, with direct or mediated coupling, interacting with a shared bath. For illustration, we treat Förster or cavity-mediated coupling between semiconductor quantum dots interacting with acoustic phonons. Using the rigorous method of Trotter's decomposition with cumulant expansion, we demonstrate a reduction in the dephasing rates at specific distances between the dots. The control of dephasing with distance is a coherent effect of the shared bath and is absent for independent baths. It can be understood in terms of phonon-assisted transitions between the entangled qubit states of the coupled system.
