Spin and statistics in Galilean covariant field theory

Abstract

The existence of a possible connection between spin and statistics is explored within the framework of Galilean covariant field theory. To this end fields of arbitrary spin are constructed and admissible interaction terms introduced. By explicitly solving such a model in the two-particle sector it is shown that no spin and statistics connection can be established.

A connection between spin and statistics based on Galilean invariant delta functions

Masanori Kobayashi, M. de Montigny, F. C. Khanna

We define Galilean invariant delta functions by using the Takahashi formulation, which describes particles with arbitrary spin. The direct calculation of the Galilean invariant delta functions in the (N+1)-dimensional Galilean covariant extended manifolds reveals that, for N odd, there exists a surface on which these delta functions vanish. This feature corresponds to the spacelike separation in the relativistic quantum field theory, and it enables us to discuss a connection between spin and statistics in the Galilean covariant theories. These results show that a spin-statistics connection holds for even-dimensional Galilean covariant extended manifolds; that is, for N-dimensional space-times with odd N≥5. Likewise, we observe that there is no such connection for odd-dimensional Galilean covariant extended manifolds; that is, for N-dimensional space-times with even N≥4. Thus, our results support the claim that there is no connection between spin and statistics in the usual nonrelativistic theory, for which N=4.

Possibility of obtaining a non-relativistic proof of the spin-statistics theorem in the Galilean frame

Gabriel D. Puccini, H. Vucetich

Here we explore the possibility to obtain a non-relativistic proof of the spin-statistics theorem. First, we examine the structure of axioms and theorems involved in a relativistic Schwinger-like proof of the spin-statistics relation. Second, starting from this structure we identify the relativistic assumptions. Last, we reformulate these assumptions in order to obtain a Galilean proof. We conclude that the spin-statistics theorem cannot be deduced into the framework of Galilean quantum field theories for three space dimensions because two of the assumptions needed to prove the theorem are incompatible. We analyze, however, the conditions under which a non-relativist proof could still be deduced.

Spin operator and spin states in Galilean covariant Fermi field theories

Fuad M. Saradzhev

Spin degrees of freedom of the Galilean covariant Dirac field in $(4+1)$ dimensions and its nonrelativistic counterpart in $(3+1)$ dimensions are examined. Two standard choices of spin operator, the Galilean covariant and Dirac spin operators, are considered. It is shown that the Dirac spin of the Galilean covariant Dirac field in $(4+1)$ dimensions is not conserved, and the role of non-Galilean boosts in its nonconservation is stressed out. After reduction to $(3+1)$ dimensions the Dirac field turns into a nonrelativistic Fermi field with a conserved Dirac spin. A generalized form of the L\'evy-Leblond equations for the Fermi field is given. One-particle spin states are constructed. A particle-antiparticle system is discussed.

Connecting Spin and Statistics in Quantum Mechanics

Arthur Jabs, Paul Ehrenfest

Abstract. The spin-statistics connection is derived in a simple manner under the postulates that the original and the exchange wave functions are simply added, and that the azimuthal phase angle, which defines the orientation of the spin part of each single-particle spin-component eigenfunction in the plane normal to the spinquantization axis, is exchanged along with the other parameters. The spin factor (−1) 2s belongs to the exchange wave function when this function is constructed so as to get the spinor ambiguity under control. This is achieved by effecting the exchange of the azimuthal angle by means of rotations and admitting only rotations in one sense. The procedure works in Galilean as well as in Lorentz-invariant quantum mechanics. Relativistic quantum field theory is not required.

A spin Hamiltonian for non-relativistic electrons and their interaction with an external field

E. S. Santos, Roberto Rivelino, M. de Montigny +1 more

We investigate the spin of the electron in a non-relativistic context by using the Galilean covariant Pauli-Dirac equation. From a non-relativistic Lagrangian density, we find an appropriate Dirac-like Hamiltonian in the momentum representation, which includes the spin operator in the Galilean covariant framework. Within this formalism, we show that the total angular momentum appears as a constant of motion. Additionally, we propose a non-minimal coupling that describes the Galilean interaction between an electron and the electromagnetic field. Thereby, we obtain, in a natural way, the Hamiltonian including all the essential interaction terms for the electron in a general vector field.

SPIN–STATISTICS THEOREMS WITHOUT RELATIVITY OR FIELD THEORY

A. P. Balachandran, Alan Daughton, Z.-C. GU +3 more

Conventional proofs of the spin–statistics theorem either use relativistic quantum field theory or concern field theory solitons. We here construct new proofs of this theorem for spinning particles. They are extensions of previous work on spinless particles and require neither relativity nor field theory. They do, however, assume certain continuity conditions involving the existence of antiparticles. Non-Abelian statistics, such as parastatistics and braid statistics of order 2 or more, are excluded in our framework.
