Abstract

A new scheme is described for the generation of pulsed squeezed light by use of femtosecond pulses that have been parametrically deamplified through a single pass in a thin (100-microm) potassium niobate crystal with a significant deamplification of approximately -3 dB. The quantum noise of each pulse is registered in the time domain by single-shot homodyne detection operated with femtosecond pulses; the best squeezed quadrature variance was 1.87 dB below the shot-noise level. Such a scheme provides a basic resource for time-resolved quantum communication protocols.

Pulsed homodyne measurements of femtosecond squeezed pulses generated by single-pass parametric deamplification

A new scheme is described for pulsed squeezed light generation using femtosecond pulses parametrically deamplified through a single pass in a thin (0.1mm) potassium niobate KNbO3 crystal, with a significant deamplification of about -3dB. The quantum noise of each individual pulse is registered in the time domain using a single-shot homodyne detection operated with femtosecond pulses and the best squeezed quadrature variance was measured to be 1.87 dB below the shot noise level. Such a scheme provides the basic ressource for time-resolved quantum communication protocols.

Pulsed Homodyne Detection of Squeezed Light at Telecommunication Wavelength

We present the generation of pulsed squeezed light at telecommunication wavelength of 1.535 µm via single-pass parametric amplification in a periodically poled MgO-doped lithium niobate waveguide using a novel collinear configuration. The quadrature-amplitude of squeezed light is measured in time domain. The classical parametric deamplification of -3.2 dB and quadrature squeezing of -1.5 dB are observed. The maximum classical parametric amplification of 19.3 dB is obtained at pump average power of 0.47 mW, taking advantage of the tight confinement in a waveguide and high peak power of the pulsed light.

Observation of squeezed light at 1535 μm using a pulsed homodyne detector

Squeezed light was generated at a telecommunication wavelength via single-pass optical parametric amplification in a periodically poled MgO-doped LiNbO(3) waveguide. Classical parametric deamplification of -8.9 dB was achieved. This large magnitude of deamplification indicates that the problem of gain-induced diffraction was avoided by employing the waveguide. Squeezing of 3.2 dB was directly observed using a time-domain pulsed homodyne detector.

Generation of femtosecond pulsed quadrature phase squeezed light

We demonstrate experimentally the short pulse amplitude squeezed light from a singly resonant synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO). The SPOPO operates in the frequency degenerate case and below threshold, with using a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate crystal. The pump laser is the second harmonic of a ultrashort mode-locked femtosecond pulse at 850 nm. The reduction of quantum noise of 2.58 dB is obtained experimentally. The squeezing extent is deduced to be 4.48 dB.

Pulsed Squeezed Light

Squeezed light in the form of a train of pulses, each approximately 100 ps in width, has been generated by parametric down-conversion in KTiOP${\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ crystals. The measured noise reduction in the quiet quadrature of the field is 0.6 dB below the shot-noise limit. The quadrature noise components are measured with a balanced homodyne detector using a pulse train for the local oscillator. The noise reduction extends over a broad spectrum and has important implications for precision measurement at very short time scales.
