Abstract

We use the bosonization approach to investigate quantum phases of boson-fermion mixtures (BFM) of atoms confined to one dimension by an anisotropic optical lattice. For a BFM with a single species of fermions we find a charge-density wave phase, a fermion pairing phase, and a phase separation regime. We also obtain the rich phase diagram of a BFM with two species of fermions. We demonstrate that these phase diagrams can be understood in terms of polarons, i.e., atoms "dressed" by screening clouds of the other atom species. Techniques to detect the resulting quantum phases are discussed.

Phase diagrams of one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures of ultracold atoms

Ludwig Mathey, Daw-Wei Wang

We study the quantum phase diagrams of Bose-Fermi mixtures of ultracold atoms confined to one dimension in an optical lattice. For systems with incommensurate densities, various quantum phases, e.g., spin- or charge-density waves, pairing, phase separation, and the Wigner crystal, are found to be dominant in different parameter regimes within a bosonization approach. The structure of the phase diagram leads us to propose that the system is best understood as a Luttinger liquid of polarons (i.e., atoms of one species surrounded by screening clouds of the other species). Special fillings, half filling for fermions, and unit filling for bosons, and the resulting gapped phases are also discussed, as well as the properties of the polarons and the experimental realization of these phases.

Commensurate mixtures of ultracold atoms in one dimension

Ludwig Mathey

We study binary mixtures of ultracold atoms, confined to one dimension in an optical lattice, with commensurate densities. Within a Luttinger liquid description, which treats various mixtures on equal footing, we derive a system of renormalization group equations at second order, from which we determine the rich phase diagrams of these mixtures. These phases include charge and spin density wave orders, singlet and triplet pairings, polaron pairing [L. Mathey et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 120404 (2004)], and a supersolid phase. Various methods to detect our results experimentally are discussed.

Phase Diagram of Bose-Fermi Mixtures in One-Dimensional Optical Lattices

Lode Pollet, Matthias Troyer, Kris Van Houcke +1 more

The ground state phase diagram of the one-dimensional Bose-Fermi Hubbard model is studied in the canonical ensemble using a quantum Monte Carlo method. We focus on the case where both species have half filling in order to maximize the pairing correlations between the bosons and the fermions. In case of equal hopping we distinguish among phase separation, a Luttinger liquid phase, and a phase characterized by strong singlet pairing between the species. True long-range density waves exist with unequal hopping amplitudes.

Counterflow superfluid of polaron pairs in Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices

Ippei Danshita, Ludwig Mathey

We study the quantum phases of one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices. Assuming repulsive interparticle interactions, equal mass, and unit total filling, we calculate the ground-state phase diagram by means of both the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory and time-evolving block decimation method. We demonstrate the existence of a counterflow superfluid phase of polaron pairs, which are composite particles consisting of two fermions and two bosonic holes, in a broad range of the parameter space. We find that this phase naturally emerges in ${}^{174}$Yb-${}^{173}$Yb mixtures, realized in recent experiments, at low temperatures.

Atomic Bose-Fermi Mixtures in an Optical Lattice

Maciej Lewenstein, Luis Santos, M. A. Baranov +1 more

A mixture of ultracold bosons and fermions placed in an optical lattice constitutes a novel kind of quantum gas, and leads to phenomena, which so far has been discussed neither in atomic physics, nor in condensed matter physics. We discuss the phase diagram at low temperatures, and in the limit of strong atom-atom interactions, and predict the existence of quantum phases that involve pairing of fermions with one or more bosons, or, respectively, bosonic holes. The resulting composite fermions may form, depending on the system parameters, a normal Fermi liquid, a density wave, a superfluid liquid, or an insulator with fermionic domains. We discuss the feasibility for observing such phases in current experiments.

Quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixtures on one-dimensional optical lattices

Pinaki Sengupta, Leonid P. Pryadko

We study numerically and analytically the phases of a mixture of ultracold bosons and spin-polarized fermions in a one-dimensional lattice. In particular, along a symmetry plane in the parameter space, we obtain the exact boundary of the boson-demixing transition from the Bethe ansatz solution of the standard Hubbard model. For a region of parameter space, we prove the existence of boson-fermion mixed phase at all densities. This phase is a two-component Luttinger liquid for weak couplings or for incommensurate total density, otherwise it has a charge gap but retains a gapless mode of mixture composition fluctuations. We show that the static density correlations in these two regimes are markedly different.
